The Good, the Bad, and the Neutral: Twitter Users’ Opinion on the ASUU Strike

Aim/Purpose: Nigeria’s university education goes through incessant strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This strike has led to shared emotion on micro-blogging sites like Twitter. This study analyzed selected historical tweets from the “ASUU” to understand citizens’ opinions. Background: The researchers conducted sentiment analysis and topic modelling to understand Twitter users’ opinions on the strike. Methodology: The researchers used the Valence Aware Dictionary for Sentiment Reasoning (VADER) technique for sentiment analysis, and the Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) was used for topic modelling. A total of 10,000 tweets were first extracted for the study. After data cleaning, 1323 tweets were left. Contribution: To the researcher’s best knowledge, no published study has presented a sentiment analysis on the topic of the ASUU strike using the Twitter dataset. This research will fill this gap by providing a sentiment analysis and drawing out subjects by exploring the tweets on the phrase “ASUU.” Findings: The sentiment analysis result using VADER returned 567 tweets as ‘Negative,’ with the remaining 544 and 212 categorized as Positive and Neutral. The result of the LDA returned six topics, all comprising seven keywords. The topics were the solution to the strike, ASUU strike effect, strike Call-off, appeal to ASUU, student protest and student appeal. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can use this study’s findings to compare with other contexts of opinion mining. Practitioners may also use the research to understand better the attitudes of their staff and students about the strikes to create actionable solutions before the suspension of the strike. Future Research: Future studies can collect information from other social networking and blogging sites.

WHEN IN ROME, LOOK LIKE CAESAR? INVESTIGATING THE LINK BETWEEN DEMAND-SIDE CULTURAL POWER DISTANCE AND CEO POWER

Agency theory-grounded research on boards of directors and firm legitimacy has historically viewed CEO power as de-legitimating, often taking this fact for granted in theorizing about external assessors' evaluations of a firm. With few exceptions, this literature has focused exclusively on capital market participants (e.g., investors, securities analysts) as the arbiters of a firm's legitimacy and has accordingly assumed that legitimate governance arrangements are those derived from the shareholder-oriented prescriptions of agency theory. We extend this line of research in new ways by arguing that customers also externally assess firm legitimacy, and that firms potentially adjust their governance characteristics to meet customers' norms and expectations. We argue that the cultural-cognitive institutions prevalent in customers' home countries influence their judgments regarding a firm's legitimacy, such that firms competing heavily in high-power distance cultures are more likely to have powerful CEOs, with CEO power a source of legitimacy—rather than illegitimacy—among customers. We also argue that the more dependent a firm is on its customers and the more salient cultural power distance is as a demand-side institutional norm, the greater this relationship will be. Data from 151 U.S. semiconductor and pharmaceutical firms over a 10-year period generally support our predictions.

Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut suburbs

BEIRUT: The Israeli military carried out at least five airstrikes on the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut on Tuesday, after Israel’s defence minister ruled out any ceasefire in Lebanon until Israel’s goals had been met.

Smoke rose over Beirut as blasts shook the capital around mid-morning. The explosions followed an Israeli military warning posted on social media identifying 12 sites in the southern suburbs and saying it would take action against them soon. It warned residents they were located near Hezbollah facilities.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the latest strikes. Residents have largely fled the southern suburbs since Israel began bombing the area in September.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded in parts of the north, sending residents running for shelter, and the military said a number of “suspicious aerial targets” were launched from Lebanon. There were no reports of injuries.

Ignited by the Gaza war, the conflict at the Lebanese-Israeli border had been rumbling on for a year before Israel went on the offensive in September, pounding wide areas of Lebanon with airstrikes and sending troops into the south.

Israel has dealt heavy blows to Hezbollah over the last seven weeks, killing many of its top leaders including Hassan Nasrallah, flattening parts of Beirut’s southern suburbs, and causing vast destruction in border villages in south Lebanon.

Meeting with Israel’s general staff for the first time, Israel’s newly appointed Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Monday there would be no ceasefire in Lebanon until Israel achieves its goals.

“Israel will not agree to any arrangement that does not guarantee Israel’s right to enforce and prevent terrorism on its own, and meet the goals of the war in Lebanon - disarming Hezbollah and its withdrawal beyond the Litani River and returning the residents of the north safely to their homes.”

Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar had said earlier on Monday there had been “a certain progress” in ceasefire talks, whilst adding the war against Hezbollah was not yet over.

The main challenge facing any ceasefire deal would be enforcement, he said.

Hezbollah has said it is ready for a long war against Israel and has kept up rocket fire.

SOUTH OF THE LITANI

The Lebanese government, which includes Hezbollah, has repeatedly called for a ceasefire based on the full implementation of a U.N. Resolution that ended a war between the group and Israel in 2006.

The resolution calls for the area south of the Litani to be free of all weapons other than those of the Lebanese state. Lebanon and Israel have accused each other of violating the resolution.

Israel’s offensive has driven more than 1 million people from their homes in Lebanon in the last seven weeks. Since hostilities erupted a year ago, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed 3,243 people and injured 14,134, the Lebanese health ministry said. Its figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Hezbollah attacks have killed roughly 100 civilians and soldiers in northern Israel, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, and southern Lebanon over the last year.

KPDN to call mamak restaurant operators over proposed food price hike

SUBANG JAYA: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) will summon the Johor Indian Muslim Entrepreneurs Association tomorrow to seek clarification on its proposal to raise food prices by five per cent starting next year.

Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said KPDN had issued a notice to the association under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, requiring an explanation for the proposed price increase.

“Since this association has only just made the announcement for next year, we are taking proactive steps to prevent anyone from taking advantage of the situation.

“This notice is to summon the association to provide an explanation for their announcement regarding the price increase,” he told reporters after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on price data sharing between KPDN, Mydin, and Redtick here today.

According to media reports, about 300 mamak restaurant operators in Johor expressed concerns about rising operating costs, with the implementation of the minimum wage next year expected to further increase expenses.

As a result, Indian Muslim restaurant operators are expected to raise food prices by at least five per cent at their premises from next year.

Elaborating, Armizan cited an example from OPS Kesan 2.0, where the ministry had taken action against those attempting to take advantage of the implementation of targeted diesel subsidies and the sales and service tax (SST) hike.

“Some parties announced a price increase, but after being summoned and asked to explain, it was found that their reasons were unfounded.

“For instance, the construction sector claimed that the price increase was due to the implementation of the targeted diesel subsidies, even though it is not eligible to use subsidised diesel,” he said.

Armizan said, therefore, that KPDN had issued a notice and taken action under OPS Kesan 2.0 to ensure that price increases were only made based on relevant, actual costs.

Robin Kachfi won last february the kunstform BMX Shop "Sponsor Me" Video Competition and is now a real part of the kunstform BMX Shop Team! Especially in the last few weeks during the Hiphop Open BMX Jam in Stuttgart and the Munich Mash we spend a good time and had many good sessions! Reason enough for our "Team Manager" Daniel to let him answer a few questions and to take a closer look at his current bike setup!

Yo Robin, where are you from and how long do you ride BMX?

Hi Daniel, I'm from Mannheim (Germany) and i'm 19 years old! I ride arround 5 years now.

Your Bike is nearly full equipped of BSD parts!
What bike setup do you have right now and what could you let us know about it?

Yes, I simply love BSD!
I have real good feeling with my bike right now and i love the simple colorway! My tyres have about 60 psi air pressure because Nosie Wheelies feels so smooth and it's more healty for my wrists.

Here my bike setup:

Yeah, this year i will be enter one of the biggest flatland competition i ever have been! Of course i feel a mix between pressure and happiness! I used my time very well and rode a lot! So i'm looking forward and we will see how it will develop!

Your bike didn't look like a typical fragile and knotted BMX flatland bike! With all the Cult Parts it looks very stable! Please let us know why you have choosen these kind of parts?!

Yeah, i don't know, i feel more and more that i need just stable bikes and that's why i moved away from usual "flatland" bikes! My style keeps a lot of pressure of the bike and i'm tired of fixing it every second! As well i need for my fast flat style some bulk for control and i rode last time a lot of street with my dudes, so that's why my current setup is just a perfect mix for me, right now!

Mika Köhler - Bike Check 2017

Our 18inch shredder Mika Köhler has built up his current whip with some fresh parts, which we had to check out!

Yo Mika, where do you come from and how long have you been riding?

Hey, I'm from Lauffen am Neckar, GER and I've been riding BMX for 4years now.

What is your favorite BMX video?

Many, but I prefer the Sunday grow up and the BSD Transmission DVD most!

What bike setup do you have and what can you tell about it?

So basically a bike for me has to be street-ready, black, clean and in 18 inches. I would prefer, if the whole setup would be built out of only 2-3 brands but it's a bit hard to find the perfect parts for a 18inch bike. This is why my bmx is equipped with about 15 different brands. Each part is carefully selected and fits like the fist on the eye. I'm particularly proud of the handlebars and cranks, which were the first custom parts of my first bmx, which was a stereo halfstack 18 ". Soon the cranks will be replaced and hung on the wall!

André Bodlin - Bike Check 2017

André Bodlin has recently received parts from eclat via traffic distro for his new whip, which we had to check out!

Yo André, where do you come from and how long have you been riding?

I come from the beautiful Sonthofen in the Allgäu, but I'm living for 3,5 years in Stuttgart now. I've been riding BMX for about 6-7 years.

What is your favorite BMX video?

Difficult task from the abundance of great BMX videos to choose a favorite, but the Above Below Part by Nathan Williams (filmed by Rich Forne) I've probably watched most.

What bike setup do you have and what can you tell about it?

Most of the parts on my bike are Éclat products. Only frame and handlebars come from Wethepeople. The frame is - since I`m not the largest - with the small top tube (20.75 ") quite perfect for me. In addition, I`ve made sure that the Chain Stay is slightly shorter. Tailwhips are a bit easier. There is not much more to report. Except maybe my light Chicago handlebars (but still limited). Oh yes: I am very satisfied :)

What bike setup do you have and what can you tell about it?

I'm riding my signature Autum Bikes "PIVN" frame for one year now and I just got my second sample of it and well... it's just perfect! It has a shorter chainstay, because I'm not the tallest. My setup isn't the usual „Flatland“ setup, it's actually more „Flat Street Whatever“.

Fabio Etzel - Bike Check 2017

Fabio Etzel is a real "rail shredder", who's grinding every rail no matter how high or long they are.

Yo Fabio, where do you come from and how long have you been riding?

I'm from Backnang near Stuttgart and I got my first BMX bike about 5 years ago

What is your favorite BMX video?

Actually I like every BMX street video but at the moment I'm prefering Simone Barraco's DIG 2017 Video

What bike setup do you have and what can you tell about it?

I'm riding a simple street setup. This means I haven't any colours and not many stickers on my bike. The reason is I prefer simple and clean colourways on my bike

Arthur Biedermann - Bike Check 2018

Arthur Biedermann loves to travel and when he's on his bike he prefers trails or the streets of Stuttgart

Yo Arthur, where do you come from and how long have you been riding?

I'm from "aus Weil der Stadt", which is in the near of Stuttgart, GER. I got my first BMX around 9 years ago and before I was riding BMX I rode 3 or 4 years MTB. MTB was in our area very popular but when my MTB was stolen (RIP), I started riding BMX.

What is your favorite BMX video?

Cult Talk is Cheap - DAK Part and No Bicycles - Ty Morrow Part

What bike setup do you have and what can you tell about it?

I'm riding a street setup, which is (for me) an allround machine. The colorway is actually very simple...I like it!
