Citizens' Values Regarding Research With Stored Samples From Newborn Screening in Canada

Newborn screening (NBS) programs may store bloodspot samples and use them for secondary purposes, such as research. Recent public controversies and lawsuits over storage and secondary uses underscore the need to engage the public on these issues.

This public engagement study identifies values underlying citizens’ acceptance of and discomfort with research from NBS samples. Well-designed methods of public education and civic discourse on the risks and benefits of storage and secondary uses of NBS samples are required. (Read the full article)

Dental Composite Restorations and Psychosocial Function in Children

Dental composites composed of bisphenol A (BPA) derivatives are common alternatives to amalgam, but may release BPA. Gestational BPA exposure has been associated with poorer behavior in children. A safety trial of amalgam found worse psychosocial outcomes for children randomized to composites.

In the trial, greater exposure to bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate-based dental composite in children aged 6 to 10 years was associated with worse self-reported psychosocial functioning at 5-year follow-up. There were no such associations with exposure to dental amalgam or urethane-dimethacrylate-based polyacid-modified composite (compomer). (Read the full article)

Influence of Tobacco Displays and Ads on Youth: A Virtual Store Experiment

Youth exposure to retail tobacco advertisements and displays is associated with smoking initiation. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 gives states and local governments legal authority to regulate the time, place, and manner of tobacco advertising.

This is the first experimental study using a virtual store environment to provide evidence that a policy banning tobacco product displays at the point of sale may deter youth from attempting to purchase tobacco products at retail stores. (Read the full article)

The Relationship Between Cow's Milk and Stores of Vitamin D and Iron in Early Childhood

Cow’s milk consumption has opposite effects on vitamin D and iron levels in children; however, the amount of cow’s milk intake required for sufficient stores of vitamin D and iron is poorly understood, and existing guidelines on consumption are unclear.

Two cups of cow’s milk per day is sufficient to maintain healthy vitamin D and iron stores for most children. Wintertime vitamin D supplementation appears particularly important among children with darker skin pigmentation. (Read the full article)

Natural History of Stuttering to 4 Years of Age: A Prospective Community-Based Study

Stuttering is extremely common, with 8.5% of children affected by age 3 years in a prospective community-ascertained cohort of Australian children. The natural history and comorbidities of early stuttering are uncertain at the population level.

The cumulative incidence of stuttering was 11% by 4 years. Stuttering children were similar in temperament and social-emotional development but had better verbal and nonverbal skills than their peers. Recovery from stuttering was low; 6.3% 12 months after onset. (Read the full article)

The Natural History of Jaundice in Predominantly Breastfed Infants

Newborn infants who are predominantly breastfed are much more likely to develop prolonged hyperbilirubinemia than those fed formula, but the prevalence of prolonged hyperbilirubinemia in a largely white, North American, breastfed population is unknown.

Practitioners can be reassured that it is normal for 20% to 30% of predominantly breastfed infants to be jaundiced at age 3 to 4 weeks and for 30% to 40% of these infants to have bilirubin levels ≥5 mg/dL. (Read the full article)

Home Reading Environment and Brain Activation in Preschool Children Listening to Stories

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parent-child reading from infancy through at least kindergarten, the span of maximal brain growth. Home literacy environment, including reading behaviors and access to books, has been shown to promote oral language and print concepts.

Home reading environment is positively associated with activation of brain areas supporting narrative comprehension and mental imagery in preschool children. This offers novel insight into the neurobiological foundations of emergent literacy and potential effect of shared reading during early childhood. (Read the full article)

Psychosocial Adjustment in School-age Girls With a Family History of Breast Cancer

Many families share genetic cancer risk information with their children, and some parents and providers believe BRCA1/2 testing should be permitted in adolescence. The psychosocial effects and impact on health and risk behaviors of this knowledge is unknown.

In our cohort of 869 mother-daughter pairs, we found no differences in general adjustment, but 10- to 13-year-old girls with breast cancer family histories reported higher breast cancer–specific distress and perceived breast cancer risk. Mother distress was associated with daughter distress. (Read the full article)

Applying Behavioral Economics to Enhance Safe Firearm Storage

Behavioral economics applies key principles from psychology and economics to address obstacles to behavior change. The important topic of pediatric firearm injuries has not yet been explored through a behavioral economic lens. Pediatric firearm-related injuries are a significant public health problem in the United States. Despite American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines advising that firearms be stored unloaded, in a locked box or with a locking device, and separate from ammunition, estimates suggest that ~4.6 million children live in homes with at least 1 loaded and unlocked firearm. In this article, we use behavioral economic theory to identify specific cognitive biases (ie, present bias; in-group, out-group bias; and the availability heuristic) that may influence parental decision-making around firearm storage. We illustrate situations in which these biases may occur and highlight implementation prompts, in-group messengers, and increased salience as behaviorally informed strategies that may counter these biases and subsequently enhance safe firearm storage. We also describe other opportunities to leverage the behavioral economic tool kit. By better understanding the individual behavioral levers that may impact decision-making around firearm storage, behavioral scientists, pediatric providers, and public health practitioners can partner to design and test tailored interventions aimed at decreasing pediatric firearm injuries. Further empirical study is warranted to identify the presence of specific biases and heuristics and determine the most effective behavior change strategies for different subpopulations.
