In Jonah 1:6, the sailors try to save their lives by throwing their cargo overboard. But what is Jonah doing? He is sleeping. He does not even pray.

In this commentary on Jonah 1:7, we see that the sailors cast lots to see who is responsible for the storm, and the lot falls on Jonah. We look at some of the theology and background to the casting of lots.

In this commentary on Jonah 1:8, we see the sailors ask Jonah several questions. These question are to help them figure out why God sent the storm. The sailors are desperate for answers because they are desperate to save their lives.

In Jonah 1:9, Jonah explains to the sailors that he worships Yahweh, who made the sea and dry land. But what really does Jonah tell the sailors? Is his portrayal of God accurate? How will the sailors understand what Jonah say?

In Jonah 1:10-11, the sailors are so afraid of what Jonah told them about God, that they ask Jonah what they can do to appease God and rescue their lives. Jonah has so injured the honor of God, that the sailors were certain God was out for revenge upon Jonah, and they were unlucky enough to be around him when God struck.

Jonah teaches the sailors some horrible theology about God in Jonah 1:12. He basically tells them that God accepts human sacrifice. Why would Jonah say this? What is Jonah thinking? It is not even correct theology! It seems that Jonah wants to die.

Even though Jonah taught the sailors horrible theology about God, the sailors try to do the right thing in Jonah 1:13 by rowing back to shore. Even pagan sailors recognize when a follower of God is telling them things that are not right.

Before the sailors do what Jonah asked of them, they pray to God in Jonah 1:14 and let Him know they are just obeying what His prophet instructed. This verse is not exactly a request for forgiveness, for the sailors think that this what will please God. After all, that is what Jonah told them.

In Jonah 1:15-16, the sailors do what Jonah said, and sacrifice him to the raging sea. When it calmed, they made vows and sacrifices to God. They probably did not become monotheists, for Jonah had not given them enough information about God for that.

After Jonah was thrown into the sea, Jonah 1:17 indicates that God sent a great fish to swallow Jonah. What does this mean and why did God do it? This verse shows that God is preserving Jonah’s life despite Jonah’s frequent attempts to end it.

North Korea released a smiling picture of Kim Jong-Un and were VERY specific about pointing out the fact that the image was untouched. Obviously the first thing the internet did when they got a hold of the image was to touch it up a bit. The results were glorious.

On this week's episode, I'm joined by James Benge of Football London to discuss most of the Arsenal squad agreeing to a round of pay cuts. However, Mesut Ozil was widely reported to have held off from the agreement – what should we make of that, especially in light of comments made by his agent during the week. We conducted a large-scale survey covering 58 countries and over 100,000 respondents between late March and early April 2020 to study beliefs and attitudes towards citizens’ and governments’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most respondents reacted strongly to the crisis: they report engaging in social distancing and hygiene behaviors, and believe that strong policy measures, such as shop closures and curfews, are necessary. They also believe that their government and their country’s citizens are not doing enough and underestimate the degree to which others in their country support strong behavioral and policy responses to the pandemic. The perception of a weak government and public response is associated with higher levels of worries and depression. Using both cross-country panel data and an event-study, we additionally show that strong government reactions correct misperceptions, and reduce worries and depression. Our findings highlight that policy-makers not only need to consider how their decisions affect the spread of COVID-19, but also how such choices influence the mental health of their population.

Despite widespread interest, there is little systematic evidence on the relationship between income, wealth, and charitable giving. We use the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to provide descriptive statistics on this relationship. We find that, irrespective of specifica­tion, donative behavior increases with greater resources.

We study the trade-offs faced by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that serve as platforms through which consumers access both television and internet services. As online streaming video improves, these providers may respond by attempting to steer consumers away from streaming video toward their own TV services, or by attempting to capture surplus from this improved internet content. We augment the standard mixed bundling model to demonstrate the trade-offs the ISP faces when dealing with streaming video, and we show how these trade-offs change with the pricing options available to the ISP. Next, we use unique household-level panel data and the introduction of usage-based pricing (UBP) in a subset of markets to measure consumers' responses and to evaluate quantitatively the ISP's trade-offs. We find that the introduction of UBP led consumers to upgrade their internet service plans and lower overall internet usage. Our findings suggest that while steering consumers towards TV services is possible, it is likely costly for the ISP and therefore unlikely to be profitable. This is especially true if the ISP can offer rich pricing menus that allow it to capture some of the surplus generated by a better internet service. The results suggest that policies like UBP can increase ISPs' incentive to maintain open access to new internet content.

We explore whether minimum wage increases result in substitution from lower-skilled to slightly higher-skilled labor. Using 2011-2016 American Community Survey data (ACS), we show that workers employed in low-wage occupations are older and more likely to have a high school diploma following recent statutory minimum wage increases. To better understand the role of firms, we examine the Burning Glass vacancy data. We find increases in a high school diploma requirement following minimum wage hikes, consistent with our ACS evidence on stocks of employed workers. We see substantial adjustments to requirements both within and across firms.
