demo Cadence Demonstrates Complete PCIe 7.0 Solution at PCI-SIG DevCon ‘24 By community.cadence.com Published On :: Tue, 11 Jun 2024 23:00:00 GMT PCI-SIG DevCon 2024 – 32nd Anniversary For more than a decade, Cadence has been well-known in the industry for its strong commitment and support for PCIe technology. We recognize the importance of ensuring a robust PCIe ecosystem and appreciate the leadership PCI-SIG provides. To honor the 32nd anniversary of the PCI-SIG Developer’s Conference, Cadence is announcing a complete PCIe 7.0 IP solution for HPC/AI markets. Why Are Standards Like PCIe So Important? From the simplest building blocks like GPIOs to the most advanced high-speed interfaces, IP subsystems are the lifeblood of the chipmaking ecosystem. A key enabler for IP has been the collaboration between industry and academia in the creation of standards and protocols for interfaces. PCI-SIG drives some of the key definitions and compliance specifications and ensures the interoperability of interface IP. HPC/AI markets continue to demand high throughput, low latency, and power efficiency. This is fueling technology advancements, ensuring the sustainability of PCIe technology for generations to come. As a close PCI-SIG member, we gain valuable early insights into the evolving specs and the latest compliance standards. PCIe 7.0 specifications and beyond will enable the market to scale, and we look forward to helping our customers build best-in-class cutting-edge SoCs using Cadence IP solutions. Figure 1. Evolution of PCIe Data Rates (source PCI-SIG) What’s New This Year at DevCon? At DevCon ’24, the PCIe 7.0 standard will take center stage, and Cadence is showing off a full suite of IP subsystem solutions for PCIe 7.0 this year. What Sets Cadence Apart? At Cadence, we believe in building a full subsystem for our testchips with eight lanes of PHY along with a full 8-lane controller. Adding a controller to our testchip significantly increases the efficiency and granularity in characterization and stress testing and enables us to demonstrate interoperability with real-world systems. We are also able to test the entire protocol stack as an 8-lane solution that encompasses many of the applications our customers use in practice. This approach significantly reduces the risks in our customers’ SoC designs. Figure 2: Piper - Cadence PHY IP for PCIe 7.0 Figure 3: Industry’s first IP subsystem for PCIe 7.0 Which Market Is This For? At a time when accelerated computing has gone mainstream, PCIe links are going to take on a role of higher importance in systems. Direct GPU-to-GPU communication is crucial for scaling out complex computational tasks across multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) or accelerators within servers or computing pods. There is a growing recognition within the industry of a need for scalable, open architecture in high-performance computing. As AI and data-intensive applications evolve, the demand for such technologies will likely increase, positioning PCIe 7.0 as a critical component in the next generation of interface IP. Here's a recent article describing a potential use case for PCIe 7.0. Figure 4: Example use case for PCIe 7.0 Why Are Optical Links Important? It takes multiple buildings of data centers to train AI/ML models today. These buildings are increasingly being distributed across geographies, requiring optical fiber networks that are great at handling the increased bandwidth over long distances. However, these optical modules soon hit a power wall where all the budgeted power is used to drive the signal from point A to point B, and there is not enough power left to run the actual CPUs and GPUs. Such scenarios create a need for non-retimed, linear topologies. Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO) links can significantly reduce module power consumption and latency when compared to traditional Digital Signal Processing (DSP) based retimed optical solutions, which is critical for accelerating AI performance. Swapping from DSP-based solutions to LPO results in significant cost savings that help drive down expenditure due to lower power and cooling requirements, but this requires a robust high-performance ASIC to drive the optics rather than retimers/DSP. To showcase the robustness of Cadence IP, we have demonstrated that our subsystem testchip board for PCIe 7.0 can successfully transmit and receive 128GT/s signals through a non-retimed opto-electrical link configured in an external loopback mode with multiple orders of margin to spare. Figure 5: Example of ASIC driving linear optics Compliance Is Key For PCIe 6.0, the official compliance program has not started yet; this is typical for the SIG where the official compliance follows a few years after the spec is ratified to give enough time for the ecosystem to have initial products ready, and for test and equipment vendors to get their hardware/software up and running. At this time, PCIe Gen6 implementations can only be officially certified up to PCIe 5.0 level (the highest official compliance test suite that the SIG supports). We have taken our PCIe 6.0 IP subsystem solution to the SIG for multiple process nodes, and they are all listed as compliant. You can run this query on the pcisig.com website under the Developers->Integrators list by making the following selections: Due to space limitations, not all combinations could be tested at the May workshop (e.g., N3 root port) – this will be tested in the next workshop. Also, the SIG just held an “FYI” compliance event this week to bring together the ecosystem for confidential testing (no results were reported, and data cannot be shared outside without violating the PCI-SIG NDA). We participated in the event with multiple systems and can report that our systems have done quite well. The test ecosystem is not mature yet, and a few more FYI workshops will be conducted before the official compliance for 6.0 is launched. We have collaborated with all the key test vendors for electrical and protocol testing throughout the year. As early as the middle of last year, we were able to provide test cards to all these vendors to demo PCIe 6.0 capabilities in their booths at various events. Many of them recorded these videos, and they can be found online. Figure 6: Cadence UIO Implementation Summary Summary Cadence showcased PCIe 7.0-ready IP at PCI-SIG Developers Conference 2023 and continues to lead in PCIe IP development, offering complete solutions in advanced nodes for PCIe 7.0 that will be generally available early next year. With a full suite of solutions encompassing PHYs, Controllers, Software, and Verification IP, Cadence is proud to be a member of the PCI-SIG community and is heavily invested in PCIe. Cadence was the first IP provider to bring complete subsystem solutions for PCIe 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 with industry-leading PPA and we are proud to continue this trend with our latest IP subsystem solution for PCIe 7.0, which sets new benchmarks for power, performance, area, and time to market. demo Amsterdam police detain pro-Palestinian protesters at banned demonstration By www.voanews.com Published On :: Sun, 10 Nov 2024 10:09:10 -0500 THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Police detained several people Sunday for taking part in a demonstration in central Amsterdam that had been outlawed following violence targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club, a local broadcaster reported. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banned all demonstrations over the weekend in the aftermath of the grim scenes of youths on scooters and on foot attacking Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters on Thursday and Friday in what was widely condemned as a violent outburst of antisemitism in the Dutch capital. Israel's ambassador to the Netherlands said that 2,000 Israelis were brought home on special flights from Amsterdam over the past few days Before the match against Ajax, Maccabi fans also tore a Palestinian flag off a building in Amsterdam and chanted anti-Arab slogans on their way to the stadium. There were also reports of Maccabi fans starting fights. Video on local broadcaster AT5 showed police detaining one man Sunday who was taking part in a small demonstration on the central Dam Square. The protesters yelled slogans including "Free, free Palestine." AT5 reported that about 20 people were detained. Amsterdam Municipality said on X that police had begun arresting demonstrators who refused to leave the square, which is in the heart of the city's downtown shopping area and close to the historic canal network. Organizers of the protest went to court on Sunday morning seeking an injunction to allow the demonstration, but a judge upheld the ban imposed by the municipality. At the hearing, senior Amsterdam police officer Olivier Dutilh said that there were again incidents overnight targeting people thought to be Jewish, including some being ordered out of taxis and others being asked to produce their passports to confirm their nationality. Police launched a large-scale investigation Friday after gangs of youths conducted what Amsterdam's mayor called "hit and run" attacks on fans that were apparently inspired by calls on social media to target Jewish people. Five people were treated at hospitals and more than 60 suspects were arrested. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rushed to the Netherlands on Friday and offered Israel's help in the police investigation. He met on Saturday with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and said in a statement that the attacks and demands to show passports "were reminiscent of dark periods in history." demo US Senate Democrats rush to confirm judges before Trump takes office By www.voanews.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 00:38:25 -0500 The U.S. Senate's Democratic majority began a crusade on Tuesday to confirm as many new federal judges nominated by President Joe Biden as possible to avoid leaving vacancies that Republican Donald Trump could fill after taking office on Jan. 20. With Republicans set to take control of the chamber on Jan. 3, the Senate on Tuesday held a confirmation vote on one of Biden's judicial nominees - former prosecutor April Perry - for the first time since Trump won the Nov. 5 presidential election. The Senate voted 51-44 in favor of her becoming a U.S. district court judge in Illinois. All told, Biden has announced another 30 judicial nominees who are awaiting Senate confirmation votes. Sixteen have already have been reviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and are awaiting a final confirmation vote by the full Senate. Another 14 nominees are awaiting committee review. The U.S. Constitution assigns to the Senate the power to confirm a president's nominees for life-tenured seats on the federal judiciary. "We are going to get as many done as we can," Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement. Trump made 234 judicial appointments during his first four years in office, the second most of any president in a single term, and succeeded in moving the judiciary rightward - including building a 6-3 conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court with three appointees. Biden has appointed a host of liberal judges. Since the beginning of his presidency in 2021, the Senate has confirmed 214 Biden judicial nominees, including liberal Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. About two-thirds were women, and the same share were racial minorities. Senate Democrats are under pressure to swiftly confirm the remaining nominees, along with any new picks Biden may name in the waning weeks of his presidency. How many nominees Senate Democrats will be able to confirm remains to be seen. Trump in a social media post on Sunday called on the Senate to halt approving Biden's nominees, saying, "Democrats are looking to ram through their Judges." Billionaire Trump backer Elon Musk on Tuesday wrote on social media that "activist" judicial nominees are "bad for the country." Mike Davis, a Trump ally at the conservative judicial advocacy group Article III Project, in another post urged Senate Republicans to vote down all judicial appointments until January. "The American people voted for monumental change," Davis wrote on social media last week. "Grind the Senate to a halt." Current Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell's office declined comment. McConnell has consistently opposed Biden's nominees and, as majority leader, was instrumental in getting Trump's previous nominees confirmed. Trump's judicial appointees have been involved in major decisions welcomed by conservatives including Supreme Court rulings rolling back abortion rights, widening gun rights, rejecting race-conscious collegiate admissions and limiting the power of federal regulatory agencies. Judicial nominees require a simple majority for confirmation. Democrats currently hold a slim 51-49 majority, meaning that they can ill afford any defections or absences if Republicans show up in force to oppose Biden's nominees during the chamber's post-election "lame duck" session. West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, has said he would not vote for any nominee who does not garner at least one Republican vote. Must-pass legislation like a spending bill to avert a government shutdown also may consume precious time during the session. 'Every possible nominee' Biden's allies have said a concerted push to confirm his remaining nominees would allow him to build on his legacy of helping to diversify a federal bench long dominated by white men. He is not done nominating judges. On Friday, Biden announced his first post-election nominee, Tali Farhadian Weinstein, who after unsuccessfully running in the 2021 Democratic primary to be Manhattan district attorney was picked for a job as a federal district judge in New York. A spokesperson for Senator Dick Durbin, the No. 2 Senate Democrat and chair of the Judiciary Committee, said in a statement that he "aims to confirm every possible nominee before the end of this Congress." White House spokesperson Andrew Bates on Monday noted that during Trump's first term, the Republican-controlled Senate confirmed 18 judges after Biden had won the 2020 election but before he took office. Pending nominees include five to the influential federal appeals courts. Republicans said before the election that they had the votes to block two of them: Adeel Mangi, who would become the first Muslim federal appellate judge, and North Carolina Solicitor General Ryan Park, who unsuccessfully defended the race-conscious admissions policies before the Supreme Court. There are several others nominated to serve as trial court judges like Perry, a former prosecutor now working at Chicago-headquartered GE HealthCare who would join the bench in Illinois. Biden nominated her to a judgeship in April after her prior nomination to become Chicago's top federal prosecutor was blocked by Republican Senator JD Vance. Vance began placing a hold on Biden's nominees to the U.S. Justice Department in 2023 after Special Counsel Jack Smith secured the first of two federal indictments against Trump, who subsequently picked the senator as his vice presidential running mate. demo Haiti replaces PM, marking more turmoil in its democratic transition process By www.voanews.com Published On :: Sun, 10 Nov 2024 17:11:50 -0500 Port-au-Prince, Haiti — A transitional council created to reestablish democratic order in Haiti signed a degree Sunday firing the country's interim Prime Minister Garry Conille and replacing him with Alix Didier Fils-Aime, a businessman who was previously considered for the job. The decree, set to be published on Monday, was provided to The Associated Press by a government source. It marks even more turmoil in an already rocky democratic transition process for Haiti, which hasn't held democratic elections in years in large part due to the soaring levels of gang violence plaguing the Caribbean nation. Fils-Aime, is the former president of Haiti's Chamber of Commerce and Industry and in 2015 ran an unsuccessful campaign for Senate. The businessman studied at Boston University and was previously considered for the position as a private sector candidate for the post before Conille took the seat. Conille, a longtime civil servant who has worked with the United Nations, served as prime minister for only six months. The transitional council was established in April, tasked with choosing Haiti's next prime minister and Cabinet with the hope that it would help quell turmoil Haiti. But the council has been plagued with politics and infighting and has long been at odds with Conille. Organizations like the Organization of American States tried and failed last week to mediate disagreements in an attempt to save the fragile transition, according to reporting from The Miami Herald. The process suffered another blow in October when three members on the council faced corruption accusations, from anti-corruption investigators alleging that they demanded $750,000 in bribes from a government bank director to secure his job. The report was a significant blow to the nine-member council and is expected to further erode people's trust in it. Those same members accused of bribery, Smith Augustin, Emmanuel Vertilaire and Louis Gerald Gilles, were among those to sign the decree. Only one member, Edgard Leblanc Fils, did not sign the order. demo Global index for free and fair elections suffers biggest decline on record in 2023, democracy watchdog says By www.voanews.com Published On :: Tue, 17 Sep 2024 03:34:05 -0400 STOCKHOLM — Lower voter turnout and increasingly contested results globally are threatening the credibility of elections, an intergovernmental watchdog warned on Tuesday, as its sub-index for free and fair elections suffered its biggest decline on record in 2023. In its report, the Stockholm-based International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) said 2023 was the eighth consecutive year with a net decline in overall democratic performance, the longest consecutive fall since records began in 1975. The watchdog bases its Global State of Democracy indexes on more than 100 variables and is using four main categories - representation, rights, rule of law and participation - to categorize performance. The category of democracy related to free and fair elections and parliamentary oversight, a sub-category of representation, suffered its worst year on record in 2023. "This report is a call for action to protect democratic elections," IDEA's Secretary-General Kevin Casas-Zamora said in the report. "The success of democracy depends on many things, but it becomes utterly impossible if elections fail." The think-tank said government intimidation and electoral process irregularities, such as fraudulent voter registration and vote-counting, were increasing. It also said that threats of foreign interference, disinformation and the use of artificial intelligence in campaigns added to challenges. It also said that global voter participation had fallen to 55.5% of eligible voters in 2023 from 65.2% in 2008. Globally, in almost 20% of elections between 2020 and 2024, one of the losing candidates or parties rejected the results. IDEA said that the democratic performance in the U.S., which holds a presidential election this year, had recovered somewhat in the past two years, but the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July highlighted continued risks. "Less than half (47%) of the Americans said the 2020 election was 'free and fair' and the country remains deeply polarized," IDEA said. Full Article World News Europe
