All old links still work (if they don't, please let me know by emailing me at 'bill at this domain name'). Why? Two reasons: 1) I found my old layout limiting for what I want to do and, 2) Something in my toolchain got borked and I wasn't able to update my main page. This last one was a godsend because I decided that - rather than troubleshooting the problem, I'd put that energy toward my redesign. Notable changes: No more MovableType. I got a lot of mileage out of using MT, but in the end I hated having to use a database to store what is essentially static data. Furthermore, the templates and even writing of entries was a bit too much of a flow-mismatch. I wanted to write copy and edit layout in vim and just push the changes to the server. Now I'm using docpad and I have pretty much exactly that workflow My "Thoughts on..." blog is no longer the main page. Right now, the main page is pretty sparse, but as I add more projects (I have some in mind, it'll start to fill up some more. For now, it's an easy way to get at some of the more popular material on my site, and... My dabbling in Fiction. A few years back I started writing flash fiction under my middle name ("Edward"). I haven't in a while, but I hope to start again. So, now that's here too. Total style overhaul. Hope you like it, because I'm sticking with it for a while. My goal was minimalism. This site has always been about what I write. Therefore I want to make it easy to find the stuff here and read it with no distractions. No comments. This may change at some point (I had embedded Disqus but removed it) as I'm going with the Oatmeal Philosophy - I'm struggling against several years of writers block. Pretty soon it will have reached Hawaii, and it'll be 2021 everywhere, and 2020 will be done.Well, that was a year. Kind of a year, anyway.When my Cousin Helen and her two sisters reached a displaced persons camp at the end of WW2, having survived the Holocaust by luck and bravery and the skin of their teeth, they had no documents, and the people who gave them their papers suggested to them that they put down their ages as five years younger than they were, because the Nazis had stolen five years from them, and this was their only chance to take it back. They didn't count the war years as part of their life.I could almost do that with 2020. Just not count it as one of the years of my life. But I'd hate to throw the magic out with the bathwater: there were good things, some of them amazing, in with the awful.The hardest moments, in retrospect, were the deaths, of friends or of family, because they simply happened. I'd hear about them, by text or by phone, and then they'd be in the past. Funerals I would have flown a long way to be at didn't happen and nobody went anywhere: the goodbyes and the mutual support, the hugs and the tears and the trading stories about the deceased, none of that occurred.The hardest moments personally were walking further into the darkness than I'd ever walked before, and knowing that I was alone, and that I had no option but to get through it all, a day at a time, or an hour at a time, or a minute at a time.The best moments were moments of friendship, most of them from very far away, and a slow appreciation of land and sky and space and time. In February 2020 I'd been regretting that I knew where I would be and what I would be doing every day for the next three years. Now I'd been forced to embrace chaos and unpredictability, while at the same time, learning to appreciate the slow day to day transition that happens when you stay in the same place as the seasons change. I was seeing a different sunset every night. I hadn't managed to be in the same place, or even the same country, for nine months since... well, probably when I was writing American Gods in 2000. Here are the two conversations that I felt I learned the most from, and I put them up here because they may also teach you something or give you comfort. The first is a conversation with Nuclear Physicist and author Carlo Rovelli, moderated by Erica Wagner, about art and science, literature and life and death:The second was organised by the University of Kent. It's called Contemporary Portraiture and the Medieval Imagination: An Artist in Conversation with Her Sitters, and it's about art, I think, but it's a conversation between former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and artist Lorna May Wadsworth and me, moderated by Dr Emily Guerry, that goes to so many places. I think it's a conversation about portraits, but it feels like it addresses so much along the way. Each of the conversations is about an hour long, and, as I say, I learned so much from both of them.At the end of April, on Skye, I had ordered a telescope, and then discovered that "astronomical twilight" -- when it's dark enough to see stars -- wasn't due until the end of July. The sun didn't set until ten or ten thirty. And even once the sun had set, it didn't get dark. It would be late August before I saw a sky filled with stars.My daughter Maddy came to stay with me for November, and was amused by my reaction to the things that now fascinated me: stones, especially ones that people had moved hundred or thousands of years ago, skies and clouds, and, finally in the long, cold Skye Winter nights, I had the stars I had missed in the summer. There's no streetlights where I live, no lights for many miles. It can get as dark in the winter as it was light all night in the summer. But then you look up...(All these photos were taken on a Pixel 5 phone in Astrophotography mode. It knew what it was doing.)I wouldn't want to give back the stars, or the sunsets, or the stones, in order not to count 2020 as a real year. I wouldn't give back the deaths, either: each life was precious, and every friend or family member lost diminishes us all. But each of the deaths made me realise how much I cared for someone, how interconnected our lives are. Each of the deaths made me grieve, and I knew that I was joined in my grieving by so many other humans, people I knew and people I didn't, who had lost someone they cared about. I'd swap out the walk into the dark, but then, there's nobody in 2020 who hasn't been hurt by something in it. Our stories may be unique to us, but none of us is unique in our misery or our pain. If there was a lesson that I took from 2020, it's that this whole thing -- civilisation, people, the world -- is even more fragile than I had dreamed. And that each of us is going to get through it by being part of something bigger than we are. We're part of humanity. We've been around for a few million years -- our particular species has been here for at least two hundred thousand years. We're really smart, and capable of getting ourselves out of trouble. And we're really thoughtless and able to get ourselves into trouble that we may not be able to get ourselves out of. We are not against Comic Relief or the good work it does and encourage you to buy a red nose if you can afford it. But this year Comic Relief saw fit to include clips of David Cameron in the music video to One directions charity song. We feel including the Prime minister in this video is a slap in the face to the millions of people he has plunged into poverty in this country with his misguided austerity measures. There are currently 3.6 million children in the UK living in poverty according to barnardos 58% of them are in a family where someone works. Yet the Coalition have pushed through measures to ensure benefits even those for disabled people and people in work, like tax credits only go up by 1%. Further punishing children who will be forced further into poverty as their parents incomes are reduced even more compared to inflation. These cuts risk putting the UK in breach of the UN Economic and social rights convention we are signed up to. Food poverty has risen so sharply that there has been a massive rise in emergency food banks already. The cuts to housing benefit for many people living in social housing deemed to be over occupying their properties dubbed “The Bedroom Tax” Will see people expected to move to a smaller property or pay a charge for their extra room, even though there is a huge shortage of suitable smaller properties for them to move to. This will further increase the poverty people are suffering in the UK as they are forced to make up shortfalls in their rent or face eviction and homelessness. The coalition also rolled out across the country a new and untested Work Capability Assessment when they came into power in 2010. Between January and November 2011 10,600 disabled people who clearly wrongly had their benefits stopped died within 6 weeks of losing benefit. (a sharp rise in the statistics compared to the year before). Yet despite all these alarming statistics David Cameron's ministers continue to claim these cuts are fair and needed. Though they have made no cuts to their own wages, continue to claim massive expenses, and have not sufficiently cracked down on tax evasion by large multinational companies. But apparently we are “all in this together”. We presented all this information to comic relief and they have ignored our requests to remove David Cameron from the video, and have even promoted pictures of David Cameron's wife Samantha baking in her tax payer funded kitchen at Number 10 with her children. Making cakes she will apparently sell to downing street staff to raise money for the event. Well it's alright for some isn't it? U A selekciju Bosne i Hercegovine ponovno je pozvan Nail Omerović koji je nedavno debitirao protiv Mađarske u Ligi nacija. Sada je ostao u konkurenciji za predstojeće dvoboje u istome natjecanju, protiv Njemačke (16. studenoga) u Freiburgu i Nizozemske tri dana kasnije u Zenici. Sergej Barbarez ga također vidi na poziciji desnog bočnog, na kojoj najčešće igra i u redovima Bijelo-plavih. Arnel Jakupović ostao je i nadalje na širem popisu reprezentativaca Austrije za utakmice protiv Kazahstana i Slovenije. „Na oku“ je, dakle, izborniku Ralfu Rangnicku koji prati njegove igre za NK Osijek, što mu je zasigurno motiv više da se kod nas pokaže u najboljem izdanju. Mlada reprezentacija u play-offu s Gruzijcima Ovaj puta imamo trojicu igrača koji su dobili pozive za U-21 selekciju Hrvatske. To su Nikola Čavlina, Marko Soldo i Ivan Cvijanović, za koje možemo reći da su standardni u ovoj selekciji, dok su na pretpozivu ostali Domagoj Bukvić i Šimun Mikolčić. Izabranike Ivice Olića očekuju dva izlučna susreta play-offa na kraju kvalifikacija za Europsko prvenstvo i to protiv Gruzije. Prvo će se igrati 15. studenoga u Tbilisiju, a 19.11. uzvrat je na riječkoj Rujevici. Niko Farkaš i Filip Živković iznova su uvršteni u reprezentaciju U-19 koja svoje kvalifikacije za plasman na kontinentalnu smotru nastavlja turnirom u Karlovcu. Od 13. do 19. studenoga Hrvatska će redom igrati protiv Armenije, Bjelorusije i Srbije. Imamo i dvojicu U-18 reprezentativaca. To su Fran Peček i Ivan Barić, također naši juniori koji putuju u Rijeku na prijateljski turnir gdje će naša nacionalna vrsta za protivnike imati vršnjake iz Portugala, Republike Irske i Japana. red font-colour:red>कम्प्यूटर - मोबाइल चलाउने सबैले एकपटक पढनैपर्ने By navrajsansar.blogspot.com Published On :: Sat, 16 Feb 2013 22:59:00 +0000 कम्प्यूटर - मोबाइल चलाउने सबैले एकपटक पढनैपर्ने हालै गरिएको एक अध्ययनले जनाए अनुसार मोबाइलमा घण्टौं कुराकानी गर्नाले तपाइँलाइ एग्रेसिव बनाउँने देखाएको छ । यदि तपाइँ घण्टौं कम्प्यूटरको अगाडी बसिरहनु हुन्छ भने, तपाइले स्वास्थ्य संग जोडिएका निकै समस्याहरूको सामना गर्नुपर्ने हुन्छ । इन्टरनेट सर्फिङ गर्नु तपाइँलाइ राम्रो लाग्छ होला, तर ध्यान राख्नुस यसले तपाइँलाइ समस्यामा पनि पार्न सक्दछ । एक ठुलो अस्पतालका आँखाका डक्टर डा. ए. के. ग्रोवरका अनुसार निकै तिव्र टाउको दुखाइ, आंखा रातो हुनु, आंखामा सुख्पन, गर्दन, पीठ्यु र काँधमा लगातार पीडा जस्ता समस्याहरू कम्प्युटर र ल्यापटप जस्ता इलेक्ट्रोनिक ग्याजेट्समा लगातार काम गर्नाले भैरहेको छ । एक्सपर्ट्सका अनुसार त कम्प्यूटरको स्क्रीनमा लगातार आंखा लगाइ राख्नाले आंखामा ड्राई आई सिन्ड्रोम नामको रोग पनि हुने गर्दछ । प्रयाजसो मानिसहरू टेन्शन, माइग्रेन अथवा वर्क लोडको कारणले यस्तो हुने सोच्दछन, तर यसको मुख्य कारण भने कम्प्यूटर भिजन सिन्ड्रोम (सीवीएस) नै हो । खास कुरा के भने यो समस्या हरेक बर्ष ६ देखि ७ प्रतिशत बढिरहेको छ । क्यालिफोर्निया यूनिभर्सिटीको एक स्टडीलाइ हेर्ने हो भने, ७० प्रतिशत भन्दा धेरै कम्प्यूटर यूजर्सलाइ बिशेष किसिमको चस्माको आवश्यकता पर्ने गर्दछ । कुरा– कुरामा रिस उठनु यदि तपाइँ लगातार मोबाइलको की- बोर्डमा औला दौडाइरहनु हुन्छ भने, तपाइलाइ नजानिदो तरिकाले ‘कर्पल टनल सिन्ड्रोम’ नामको रोगले ग्रष्त बनाउन सक्दछ । भलै तपाइलाइ म्यासेजिङले अर्को व्यक्तिसंग कनेक्ट गरि राख्दछ । तर यस कृयाकलापले तपाइको आंखाको साथ- साथै औला तथा हातलाइ समेत नोक्सान पुर्याउन सक्दछ । मोबाइलमा गेम खेल्ने बेला वा एसएमएस गर्ने समय मानिसहरूको औला निकै प्रयोग हुने गर्दछ । औलालाइ पटक पटक प्रेसरमा ल्याइरहँदा यसले नसामा समेत असर पर्न सक्दछ । हात झम्झमाउने, कुनैपनि कुरा पक्रँदा कमजोरी तथा हात काँध सम्म पुर्याउँदा पीडा हुने कारण पनि यहि हो । हल्याण्डको एक यूनिभर्सिटीमा २०० जना मानिसहरूमा गरिएको एक रिसर्च पछि यो कुरा पत्ता लागेको हो । मोबाइलको प्रयोग धेरै गर्ने मानिसहरू निकै चिडचिडेपनाको शिकार भएका छन् । यसो हुनुमा मोबाइलको धेरै प्रयोगनै मुख्य रहेको कुरा डक्टरहरूले बताएका छन् । पेटको समस्या हुन सक्दछ एक रिसर्चमा देखिए अनुसार मोबाइल फोनमा ट्वाइलेटको फ्लश ह्याण्डलमा भन्दा पनि १८ गुणा बढि हानिकारक ब्याक्टेरिया हुने गर्दछन् । समाचारपत्र डेली मेलका अनुसार, जांचबाट फोनमा पनि निकै खतरनाक ब्याक्टेरिया हुने गर्दछन पत्ता लागिसकेको छ । यसै कारणले फोन प्रयोगकर्तालाइ पेट सम्बन्धी गम्भीर रोगी हुने आशंका धेरै हुने गर्दछ । रिपोर्टमा बताइए अनुसार ब्रिटेनमा मात्र प्रयोग गरिएको ६.३ करोड मोबाइल फोनमध्ये १.४७ करोड यूजर्सलाइ स्वास्थ्य सम्बन्धी समस्या पाइएको छ । रिसर्च टीममा काम गरिरहेका केरी स्टेनवेले बताए अनुसार मोबाइल फोनलाइ यता उता राख्नाले त्यसमा ब्याक्टेरियाहरू बस्ने गर्दछन् । त्यहि ब्याक्टेरिया हाम्रो हात सम्म आइपुग्दछ । जसका कारण हाम्रो स्वास्थ्यमा ती ब्याक्टेरिया सिधै प्रवेश गर्न सक्दछन् । घण्टौं आँखाले नहेर्नुस यस रिसर्चमा काम गर्ने हेल्थ एक्सपर्ट जिम फ्रान्सिजले बताए अनुसार तपाइँ आफ्नो आंखाको क्षमता भन्दा धेरै काम गर्नुहुन्छ, यसले भिडियो डिस्प्ले टर्मिनल (भिडीटी) हुने खतरा कयौं गुणाले बढ्ने गर्दछ । एक अध्ययन अनुसार घण्टौं कम्प्यूटरको स्क्रीनमा आंखा लगाइ राख्नाले हाम्रो आंखाका लागि अननेचरल सिचुएशन हुने गर्दछ । हाम्रो आंखा र ब्रेनले प्रिन्टेट चीजहरूलाइ जस्तो रूपले हेर्ने गर्दछन, त्यसको तुलनामा स्क्रीनमा हेर्दा फरक प्रतिक्रिया दिने गर्दछ । जसका कारणले मानिसमा सीवीसी हुने गर्दछ । अर्का आई स्पेशलिस्ट डक्टरका अनुसार लामो समय सम्म स्क्रीन अगाडी बस्नाले निकै इनर्जी खर्च हुने गर्दछ, जुन आंखाका लागी निकै च्यालेन्ज पूर्ण हुने गर्दछ । दोश्रो कम्प्यूटरमा काम गर्ने क्रममा आँखा कम झिम्कने गर्दछ । प्रायजसो एक मिनेटमा १४ पटक आँखा झिम्काइन्छ । तर कम्प्यूटरको प्रयोगका बेला हामी ४ देखि ६ पटक मात्र आँखा झिम्क्याउने गर्दछौं । यसका कारण आंखामा स्व्इलिङ र मोतिबिन्दु जस्ता समस्याहरू आउँदछन् । केही कुरामा ध्यान राखौं आफ्नो कम्प्युटर स्क्रीनको कन्ट्रास्ट र ब्राइटनेसलाइ नर्मल राख्नुस । छिटो छिटो आँखा झिम्क्याउने गर्नुस । केही बेरको अन्तरमा आंखालाइ केही सेकेण्डका लागी बन्द गर्ने गर्नुस । यस्तो गर्दा तपाइँको आंखालाइ आराम पुग्दछ । यस्तो कार्य हरेक ३० मिनेटमा गर्ने गर्नुस । कम्प्यूटर यूजर्सका लागी बनाइएको स्पेशल चश्माको प्रयोग गर्नुहोस । यो चस्मा ती मानिसहरूका लागी बनाइएको हो , जो मानिसहरू लामो समय सम्म कम्प्युटरमा बसेर काम गर्ने गर्दछन् । के भन्दछ त रिसर्च ? लण्डन यूनिभर्सिटीको एक रिसर्च अनुसार, जो मानिस कम्प्युटरमा ४ घण्टा भन्दा बढि समय बितउँदछन, उनीहरूलाइ अन्य मानिसको तुलनामा १२५ प्रटिशत धेरै हृदय सम्बन्धी रोगहरू लाग्ने सम्भावना रहन्छ । रिसर्चबाट कम्प्यूटरमा धरै समय बिताउने मानिसहरूलाइ मृत्यु हुने खतरा अन्य मानिसहरूको तुलनामा ४५ प्रतिशत धेरै हुने गर्दछ । यदि तपाइँ हरेक दिन ४ घण्टा भन्दा धेरै मोबाइलमा कुरा गर्नुहुन्छ भने तपाइँको ब्यवहार एग्रेसिभ हुने गर्दछ । क्यालिफोर्निया यूनिभर्सिटी बर्कलेको एक अध्ययन अनुसार, ७० प्रतिशत भन्दा धेरै कम्प्यूटर यूजर्सलाइ कम्प्यूटर चश्माको आवश्यकता पर्दछ। हाम्रो पोस्ट मन परे लाइक शेयर गर्नु होला Full Article
