niv <b>More Love, Less Labor: AI Powers Productivity at Autodesk University</b><o:p></o:p> By www.core77.com Published On :: The message from Autodesk and the many companies that presented and exhibited at Autodesk University (AU) last month in San Diego was clear: for the product design and manufacturing (D&M), architecture, engineering, construction and operations (AECO), and media and entertainment (M&E) industries, AI is a driving force behind productivity.Autodesk University MainstageData, data, dataAI-driven productivity is customized to the specific needs of each industry, with various generative and multimodal AI models providing solutions for tasks like workflow optimization, manufacturing quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and design visualization. However, the value of AI across these sectors—and beyond—is determined by the quantity and quality of data used.Quantity matters because more data enables AI systems to learn and improve. Quality, however, is more complex. It requires obtaining relevant data, ensuring data accuracy, and verifying that data usage complies with ethical standards.Dell demonstrated how their workstations can run generative AI 3D content with NVIDIA Edify trained on Shutterstock ethically sourced content.Customers are keyThe importance of AI and data was evident throughout AU, with presentations and product demonstrations highlighting customer-centric solutions. Hardware providers showcased high-performance workstations equipped with powerful processors, optimized to support AI workloads. Meanwhile, data and asset management providers emphasized AI’s capabilities in extracting valuable information, managing metadata, and monitoring workflows in real time.Lenovo displayed next generation workstations designed with a customer-centric focus. Partnering with Intel®, NVIDIA and Aston Martin, they offer high-end graphics, memory and processing power.Autodesk’s Design & Manufacturing team showcased how they are addressing their customers' needs by delivering AI-powered efficiencies through Fusion, a cloud-based, unified platform for design and manufacturing. They also introduced Project Bernini, a research initiative focused on a new approach to generative AI. Unlike many generative models that prioritize the appearance of 3D objects, Bernini emphasizes generating structural 3D data from the inside out, which aligns closely with real-world production needs.Experimental research project Bernini model generates shape and texture separately and does not confuse or meld those variables.AI provides a wide range of possibilities based on industry-specific needs. For entertainment and gaming, AI can generate lifelike product and character models, while in manufacturing and design, it lays the foundation for real-world production. With tools like Fusion and research projects like Bernini, Autodesk aims to empower creators and makers to leverage AI for both efficiency and innovation. niv GitHub x BUCK: Crafting a Dynamic Visual Identity for Universe ’24 By abduzeedo.com Published On :: Thu, 07 Nov 2024 13:44:34 +0000 GitHub x BUCK: Crafting a Dynamic Visual Identity for Universe ’24 abduzeedo1107—24 Learn how BUCK redefined branding and visual identity for GitHub Universe ’24 with monumental design inspired by code. The annual GitHub Universe event is a celebration of innovation, bringing together some of the brightest minds in software development. This year, GitHub partnered with BUCK, a renowned global creative company, to reimagine the event’s visual identity. Inspired by the theme “The World’s Fair of Software,” BUCK transformed GitHub Universe ’24 into a visually immersive experience that blended the past and future of software culture. Here’s a look at how this collaboration pushed the boundaries of branding and visual identity. The Creative Vision: Merging Tradition and Progress GitHub Universe ‘24 marked a milestone as the event’s tenth edition. This special occasion called for a branding overhaul that both paid homage to GitHub’s legacy and celebrated the event’s ongoing evolution. BUCK’s approach was rooted in capturing the spirit of World’s Fairs, where innovation and collaboration take center stage. Ward Graumans, BUCK’s Creative Director, emphasized their intent: “We aimed to create a look that celebrates this milestone while pushing the brand forward.” The visual system developed by BUCK didn’t just rehash previous designs. Instead, it evolved into a toolkit that incorporated new elements while staying true to GitHub’s core identity. Central to the branding were what BUCK called “Monuments of Progress.” These unique structures were a reinterpretation of their prior 2D shape library, elevated to represent key GitHub values. Each monument carried icons, mascots, and insider references from the developer community, merging playful aesthetics with thoughtful design. Key Elements of the Visual Identity BUCK crafted a comprehensive design system that tied together various aspects of GitHub’s event branding. The system integrated fresh color palettes, new typography, and updated logos, all influenced by the visual language of coding. The Monuments of Progress became the standout feature, serving both as iconic standalone pieces and as the basis for hero visuals. This creative concept was not just about aesthetics; it reinforced the event’s narrative, with each visual element acting as a beacon of innovation. Beyond static design, BUCK brought these monuments to life through animations and dynamic visuals. They created a suite of digital assets, from social media content to an introductory film that illuminated the event stages. This multimedia approach ensured that GitHub Universe ’24 had a cohesive yet lively visual identity, both online and in person. Collaboration and Execution The development of this branding system was a collaborative effort between BUCK, GitHub’s in-house design studio, event producers, and external partners. The process involved tight communication and shared creative insights. According to Adam Walden, VP of Brand and Corporate Marketing at GitHub, “BUCK continues to bring taste, craft, story, and incredible attention to detail to everything we do together.” This close-knit collaboration resulted in a unified event experience that resonated across different platforms. The team at BUCK didn’t just stop at creating a one-off design for the event. Instead, they developed a branding system with longevity, allowing GitHub to use these assets beyond Universe ’24. This evergreen toolkit ensures a lasting impact on GitHub’s branding efforts, providing flexibility for future campaigns and event rollouts. Impact and Legacy GitHub Universe ’24’s branding is more than a visual facelift; it’s an invitation to engage and explore. By drawing from coding elements and honoring the developer community, BUCK and GitHub have created a design system that feels both cutting-edge and familiar. The Monuments of Progress symbolize GitHub’s role as a hub of innovation, while the refined color schemes and typography elevate the brand’s visual language. This collaboration sets a new standard for event branding in the tech industry. BUCK’s creative solutions not only reflect GitHub’s ethos but also celebrate the people and projects that make the developer ecosystem thrive. It’s a testament to the power of thoughtful design and the impact of a strong, cohesive visual identity. The reimagined visual identity for GitHub Universe ’24 exemplifies how branding can serve as a narrative tool. BUCK’s designs invite viewers to think of software development not just as code, but as a world full of creativity and progress. As GitHub continues to grow, this branding system will be a cornerstone of its visual storytelling, inspiring developers and designers alike. GitHub Universe ’24, with its bold and vibrant identity, proves that a well-crafted brand can amplify the spirit of an event. BUCK’s collaboration with GitHub has set a high bar, showing how design, when rooted in community and culture, can make an event feel like a true celebration of innovation. Branding and visual identity artifacts About GitHub GitHub is the most widely adopted Copilot-powered developer platform to build, scale, and deliver secure software. Over 100 million developers, including more than 90% of the Fortune 100 companies, use GitHub to collaborate and more than 77,000 organizations have adopted GitHub Copilot. niv 10th Anniversary of the Cool Infographics Book (Part 1) By coolinfographics.com Published On :: Sat, 28 Oct 2023 17:53:21 +0000 Ten years ago today, the Cool Infographics book was released on October 28, 2013. I frequently lament that it’s nice to have written a book, but the actual process of writing a book was pretty difficult.I never set out to write a book. Wiley publishing approached me in 2011, and convinced me to turn the talk I was presenting at conferences into the outline for a new book. I had started my infographics design company, InfoNewt, in 2010, and was giving almost monthly presentations about my process to design, publish and promote infographics. Turns out that the talk outline did lend itself nicely to the structure of what became the Cool Infographics chapters.Looking back, there were a number of unique challenges that I had to solve while putting together the book, and some were also new issues for Wiley.Permissions to include infographicsI didn’t design most of the infographics I included in the book, because this wasn’t a book of self promotion. My goal was to share the best designs from the world of infographics as examples, and that meant including designs from some of the best designers in the world. Here was my challenge. Most infographics are meant to be shared and reposted as much as possible online. “Going viral” was the ultimate achievement of an infographic. However, legally reprinting an infographic in a book required the explicit, signed permission of each infographic’s copyright holder. I ended up including over 100 infographic examples in the book, which was a lot of negotiation and legwork. For every design I included, I had to track down the designer or publishing company, and get them to sign an official permission form that allowed me to include their design. I wasn’t able to include many of the designs I wanted to share because either I couldn’t track down the original designer, or they refused to sign the permission form. Infographics are largeThe online infographics that I was writing about were much larger that what could effectively be shown on the 7.3 x 9.2 inch pages of the book. They had to be reduced to fit on the pages, which made the text in many of them unreadable when sized to the book’s pages. Wiley didn’t want to publish a larger format book, so I had to come up with another idea.My solution was that every design I included, also included a link to view the original infographic online. The downside was that readers can’t click a link in a printed book. That meant they would have to manually type in the URL, and many of the links were really long and complicated addresses. So, I created over 100 shortened links for the book, using my hosting platform from the coolinfographics.com website. For example:Link in the book: Coolinfographics.com/Figure-5-19Forwards to the long original URL: http://create.mcgraw-hill.com/wordpress-mu/connectblog/files/2012/03/McGraw-Hill-Connect-Handout-WHITE-Small.jpg See what I mean? No one was ever going to try to type in that long URL.I also created an index web page for all of the Figures that had clickable links for every design in the book that is available to see online: coolinfographics.com/figuresMaking the book navigation visualInfographics is a very visual topic. Not only do readers want to see the visual examples of every concept I discuss in the book, but I wanted the book itself to be visual too. This took some negotiating with Wiley to make happen. Every chapter has its own color, and I included that color on every page in a small tab that prints all the way to what is called the “fore edge” of the page. This makes the color visible at the edges of the pages even when the book is closed. These tabs are staggered down the page to provide an easy navigation to find the color you see in the Table of Contents. Marketing was my jobIt turns out that most book publishing companies are very focused on publishing, printing and distributing a book, but not so much on marketing them once they get printed. Once a book is published they move on to publishing the next book, and the majority of promoting my book fell to me. This was something I didn’t expect. I am constantly teaching people that designing and publishing an infographic isn’t enough, and you have to promote it too. I wrote a whole chapter about in the Cool Infographics book! Similarly, I expected a big book publisher to be good at the promotion process for books. I was wrong. They printed a beautiful color book and got it into Amazon and onto the shelves at bookstores like Barnes & Noble, but that’s where their effort mostly ended. Most of the promotion for the book has come from me. Whether it was one of my talks, a guest appearance on a podcast, an article that mentioned the book (like this one) or someone using Google to search for infographics and finding the Cool Infographics website.Where to go from here? The book has done really well for 10 years, and sales continue. The concepts I wrote about in the book are all just as relevant now, as they were 10 years ago. However, some of the example designs are out-of-date, and some of the design tools aren’t around anymore.Where do you think we should from here? As readers of the Cool Infographics website and book, what would you like to see as ongoing content exploring the design, publishing and promotion of infographics? Videos, workshops, articles, tutorials, online courses, etc. Post a question, comment, or idea and let me know how Cool Infographics can be relevant to you in the future.I’d love to hear from you. Hint - it's all about the people! The session was facilitated by Claire Gibbons and Russell Allen, University of Bradford. Full Article
