To this C atom the likewise disordered vinyl group is attached, lying nearly perpendicular to the tricyclic core. In the crystal, mutual C—H⋯π inter­actions between the methine group of the furan ring and the central ring of the tricyclic core of an adjacent mol­ecule lead to inversion-related dimers.

The title benzo­furan derivatives 2-amino-5-hy­droxy-4-(4-nitro­phen­yl)benzo­furan-3-carboxyl­ate (BF1), C19H18N2O6, and 2-meth­oxy­ethyl 2-amino-5-hy­droxy-4-(4-nitro­phen­yl)benzo­furan-3-carboxyl­ate (BF2), C18H16N2O7, recently attracted attention because of their promising anti­tumoral activity. BF1 crystallizes in the space group Poverline{1}. BF2 in the space group P21/c. The nitro­phenyl group is inclined to benzo­furan moiety with a dihedral angle between their mean planes of 69.2 (2)° in BF1 and 60.20 (6)° in BF2. A common feature in the mol­ecular structures of BF1 and BF2 is the intra­molecular N—H⋯Ocarbon­yl hydrogen bond. In the crystal of BF1, the mol­ecules are linked head-to-tail into a one-dimensional hydrogen-bonding pattern along the a-axis direction. In BF2, pairs of head-to-tail hydrogen-bonded chains of mol­ecules along the b-axis direction are linked by O—H⋯Ometh­oxy hydrogen bonds. In BF1, the butyl group is disordered over two orientations with occupancies of 0.557 (13) and 0.443 (13).

Crystal structure of catena-poly[[[bis­(3-oxo-1,3-di­phenyl­prop-1-enolato-κ2O,O')zinc(II)]-μ2-tris­[4-(pyridin-3-yl)phen­yl]amine-κ2N:N'] tetra­hydro­furan monosolvate]

The reaction of bis­(3-oxo-1,3-di­phenyl­prop-1-enolato-κ2O,O')zinc(II), [Zn(dbm)2], with tris­[4-(pyridin-3-yl)phen­yl]amine (T3PyA) in tetra­hydro­furan (THF) afforded the title crystalline coordination polymer, {[Zn(C15H11O2)2(C33H24N4)]·C4H8O}n. The asymmetric unit contains two independent halves of Zn(dbm)2, one T3PyA and one THF. Each ZnII atom is located on an inversion centre and adopts an elongated octa­hedral coordination geometry, ligated by four O atoms of two dbm ligands in equatorial positions and by two N atoms of pyridine moieties from two different bridging T3PyA ligands in axial positions. The crystal packing shows a one-dimensional polymer chain in which the two pyridyl groups of the T3PyA ligand bridge two independent Zn atoms of Zn(dbm)2. In the crystal, the coordination polymer chains are linked via C—H⋯π inter­actions into a sheet structure parallel to (010). The sheets are cross-linked via further C—H⋯π inter­actions into a three-dimensional network. The solvate THF mol­ecule shows disorder over two sets of atomic sites having occupancies of 0.631 (7) and 0.369 (7).

The title compound, [Fe(CF3SO3)2(C4H8O)4], is octa­hedral with two tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate ligands in trans positions and four tetra­hydro­furane mol­ecules in the equatorial plane. By the conformation of the ligands the complex is chiral in the crystal packing. The compound crystallizes in the Sohncke space group P212121 and is enanti­omerically pure. The packing of the mol­ecules is determined by weak C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal studied was refined as a two-component inversion twin.

Crystal structure of di-μ-tri­hydro­(penta­fluoro­phenyl)­borato-tetra­kis­(tetra­hydro­furan)­disodium

The title compound, [Na(μ-C6F5BH3)(C4H8O)2]2, represents a dimeric structure of sodium and organoborohydride, located about a centre of inversion. The Na⋯B distances of 2.7845 (19) and 2.7494 (18) Å were apparently longer than the Li⋯B distances (2.403–2.537 Å) of the lithium organotri­hydro­borates in the previous reports. Moreover, an inter­action between the sodium atom and one fluorine atom on the 2-position of the benzene ring is observed [Na—F = 2.6373 (12) Å]. In the crystal, the dimeric mol­ecules are stacked along the b-axis via a π–π inter­action between the benzene rings.

Crystal structures of 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octa­bromo-5,10,15,20-tetra­kis­(penta­fluoro­phen­yl)porphyrin as the chloro­form monosolvate and tetra­hydro­furan monosolvate

The crystal structures of the title compounds, two solvates (CHCl3 and THF) of a symmetric and highly substituted porphyrin, C44H2Br8F20N4 or OBrTPFPP, are described. These structures each feature a non-planar porphyrin ring, exhibiting a similar conformation of the strained ring independent of solvent identity. These distorted porphyrins are able to form hydrogen bonds and sub-van der Waals halogen inter­actions with enclathrated solvent; supra­molecular inter­actions of proximal macrocycles are additionally affected by solvent choice. The crystal studied for compound 1·CHCl3 was refined as an inversion twin. One penta­fluoro­phenyl group was modelled as disordered over two sites [occupancy ratio = 0.462 (7):0.538 (7)]. The chloro­form solvate was also modelled as disordered over two orientations [occupancy ratio = 0.882 (7): 0.118 (7).

Crystal structure of N'-[4-(di­methyl­amino)­benzyl­idene]furan-2-carbohydrazide monohydrate

The condensation of 2-furoic hydrazide and 4-dimethyl amino­benzaldehyde in ethanol yielded a yellow solid formulated as the title compound, C14H15N3O2·H2O. The crystal packing is stabilized by inter­molecular O(water)—H⋯O,N(carbohydrazide) and N—H⋯O(water) hydrogen bonds, which form a two-dimensional network along the bc plane. Additional C—H⋯O inter­actions link the mol­ecules into a three-dimensional network. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the benzene and the furan ring is 34.47 (6)°. The carbohydrazide moiety, i.e., the C=N—N—C=O fragment and the benzene ring are almost coplanar, with an angle of 6.75 (9)° between their mean planes.

Full reciprocal-space mapping up to 2000 K under controlled atmosphere: the multipurpose QMAX furnace

A furnace that covers the temperature range from room temperature up to 2000 K has been designed, built and implemented on the D2AM beamline at the ESRF. The QMAX furnace is devoted to the full exploration of the reciprocal hemispace located above the sample surface. It is well suited for symmetric and asymmetric 3D reciprocal space mapping. Owing to the hemispherical design of the furnace, 3D grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle scattering and diffraction measurements are possible. Inert and reactive experiments can be performed at atmospheric pressure under controlled gas flux. It is demonstrated that the QMAX furnace allows monitoring of structural phase transitions as well as microstructural evolution at the nanoscale, such as self-organization processes, crystal growth and strain relaxation. A time-resolved in situ oxidation experiment illustrates the capability to probe the high-temperature reactivity of materials.

Crystal structures of two furazidin polymorphs revealed by a joint effort of crystal structure prediction and NMR crystallography

This work presents the crystal structure determination of two elusive polymorphs of furazidin, an antibacterial agent, employing a combination of crystal structure prediction (CSP) calculations and an NMR crystallography approach. Two previously uncharacterized neat crystal forms, one of which has two symmetry-independent molecules (form I), whereas the other one is a Z' = 1 polymorph (form II), crystallize in P21/c and P1 space groups, respectively, and both are built by different conformers, displaying different intermolecular interactions. It is demonstrated that the usage of either CSP or NMR crystallography alone is insufficient to successfully elucidate the above-mentioned crystal structures, especially in the case of the Z' = 2 polymorph. In addition, cases of serendipitous agreement in terms of 1H or 13C NMR data obtained for the CSP-generated crystal structures different from the ones observed in the laboratory (false-positive matches) are analyzed and described. While for the majority of analyzed crystal structures the obtained agreement with the NMR experiment is indicative of some structural features in common with the experimental structure, the mentioned serendipity observed in exceptional cases points to the necessity of caution when using an NMR crystallography approach in crystal structure determination.

CLIC4 is a cytokinetic cleavage furrow protein that regulates cortical cytoskeleton stability during cell division [RESEARCH ARTICLE]

During mitotic cell division, the actomyosin cytoskeleton undergoes several dynamic changes that play key roles in progression through mitosis. While the regulators of cytokinetic ring formation and contraction are well-established, proteins that regulate cortical stability during anaphase and telophase have been understudied. Here, we describe a role for CLIC4 in regulating actin and actin-regulators at the cortex and cytokinetic cleavage furrow during cytokinesis. We first describe CLIC4 as a new component of the cytokinetic cleavage furrow that is required for successful completion of mitotic cell division. We also demonstrate that CLIC4 regulates the remodeling of sub-plasma membrane actomyosin network within the furrow by recruiting MST4 kinase and regulating ezrin phosphorylation. This work identifies and characterizes new molecular players involved in regulating cortex stiffness and blebbing during late stages of cytokinetic furrowing.

DE-cadherin and Myosin II balance regulates furrow length for onset of polygon shape in syncytial Drosophila embryos [RESEARCH ARTICLE]

Cell shape morphogenesis from spherical to polygonal occurs in epithelial cell formation in metazoan embryogenesis. In syncytial Drosophila embryos, the plasma membrane incompletely surrounds each nucleus and is organized as a polygonal epithelial-like array. Each cortical syncytial division cycle shows circular to polygonal plasma membrane transition along with furrow extension between adjacent nuclei from interphase to metaphase. In this study, we assess the relative contribution of DE-cadherin and Myosin II at the furrow for polygonal shape transition. We show that polygonality initiates during each cortical syncytial division cycle when the furrow extends from 4.75 to 5.75 µm. Polygon plasma membrane organization correlates with increased junctional tension, increased DE-cadherin and decreased Myosin II mobility. DE-cadherin regulates furrow length and polygonality. Decreased Myosin II activity allows for polygonality to occur at a lower length than controls. Increased Myosin II activity leads to loss of lateral furrow formation and complete disruption of polygonal shape transition. Our studies show that DE-cadherin-Myosin II balance regulates an optimal lateral membrane length during each syncytial cycle for polygonal shape transition.

Scientists calculate risks of further earthquakes from gas drilling in Groningen, the Netherlands

A recent overview and analysis shows that increasing amounts of gas drilling at Groningen, the largest gas field in Europe, led to a dramatic rise in regional earthquakes between 2001 and 2013. After a reduction in extraction was introduced by the Dutch Government, earthquake numbers started to fall. Statistical analysis reveals that if high extraction rates were resumed, about 35 earthquakes, with a magnitude (M) of over 1.5 on the Richter scale, might occur annually from the year 2021 onwards, including four with a damaging magnitude of over 2.5.

New insights into multi-century phytoplankton decline in North Atlantic predict further decline under climate change

Phytoplankton are essential to marine food webs and fisheries. However, a new study indicates that their levels have declined in the North Atlantic since the beginning of the 19th century. This coincides with weakening ocean-circulation patterns, partly caused by melting ice caps. If the melting continues, the study warns of a dramatic fall in North Atlantic plankton levels that could have cascading effects across marine food webs, reducing the ocean’s ability to absorb carbon and threatening the supply of seafood for humans.

Between 13% and 16% of waste electric and electronic equipment (WEEE), furniture and leisure goods disposed of at household waste collection centres are in excellent working condition and could be easily be prepared for re-use, finds a new study from Bavaria, Germany. Improvements to waste collection, storage and treatment practices to prevent damage to disposed items could free up a further 13%-29% of these waste streams for re-use. Notably, weatherproof storage for WEEE at collection points could have prevented up to 86% of the damage endured by the studied items.

Nutrient pollution in The Netherlands is falling as a result of national and EU policies, new research has shown. However, many waters still routinely fail to meet environmental quality standards. The study, which focused on the headwaters of 167 rivers where agricultural fertilisers are the main cause of pollution, showed that up to 76% of these did not meet water quality standards.

Aquatic life needs further protection from effects of personal care products

Personal care products (PCPs) are a diverse group of products, including toothpaste, shampoo, make-up and soaps. The number and use of these products has increased over recent decades, generating concern about their impact on the environment. This literature review analysed over 5 000 reports of environmental detection of 95 different chemicals from PCPs. The analysis reveals toxic levels of PCP chemicals in raw and treated wastewater, and in surface water. The researchers recommend treatment methods focusing on antimicrobials, UV filters and fragrance molecules.
