The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics has been selected by the National Science Foundation as the recipient of a 12-meter (39-foot) radio antenna designed for submillimeter-wavelength astronomy. The ALMA Vertex Prototype Antenna was one of three antennas built as prototypes for the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, a 66-dish radio observatory currently being constructed in Chile.

A k-proper edge-coloring of a graph G is called adjacent vertex-distinguishing if any two adjacent vertices are distinguished by the set of colors appearing in the edges incident to each vertex. The smallest value k for which G admits such coloring is denoted by $chi$'a (G). We prove that $chi$'a (G) = 2R + 1 for most circulant graphs Cn([[1, R]]).

For $n$-vertex graphs with treewidth $k = O(n^{1/2-epsilon})$ and an arbitrary $epsilon>0$, we present a word-RAM algorithm to compute vertex separators using only $O(n)$ bits of working memory. As an application of our algorithm, we give an $O(1)$-approximation algorithm for tree decomposition. Our algorithm computes a tree decomposition in $c^k n (log log n) log^* n$ time using $O(n)$ bits for some constant $c > 0$.

We finally use the tree decomposition obtained by our algorithm to solve Vertex Cover, Independent Set, Dominating Set, MaxCut and $3$-Coloring by using $O(n)$ bits as long as the treewidth of the graph is smaller than $c' log n$ for some problem dependent constant $0 < c' < 1$.

Aspects of the invention relate generally to validating array bounds in an API emulator. More specifically, an OpenGL (or OpenGL ES) emulator may examine each array accessed by a 3D graphic program. If the program requests information outside of an array, the emulator may return an error when the graphic is drawn. However, when the user (here, a programmer) queries the value of the array, the correct value (or the value provided by the programmer) may be returned. In another example, the emulator may examine index buffers which contain the indices of the elements on the other arrays to access. If the program requests a value which is not within the range, the emulator may return an error when the graphic is drawn. Again, when the programmer queries the value of the array, the correct value (or the value provided by the programmer) may be returned.

A system for lifting a vehicle via multiple slings comprises a vehicle not engineered with structural facility to withstand lifting forces, including a frame which unmodified will deform in response to vertically imposed lifting forces, frame reinforcing elements affixed to the frame at selected locations which are subject to lifting deformation, at least two lifting members at spaced-apart forward frame locations, at least two lifting members at spaced-apart rearward frame locations, and a plurality of elongate slings extending respectively between each lifting member and a common lifting vertex. Each lifting member has an enlarged lower base portion rigidly affixed to the frame and an upper lifting portion. The frame reinforcing elements resist deformation of the frame in response to vertically imposed lifting forces. The enlarged base portions of the lifting members apply forces over a correspondingly enlarged area of the frame and the reinforcing elements without deforming the frame.

Dr Reshma Kewalramani has been made the new Vertex CEO.

Vertex’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Kewalramani will succeed current CEO Jeffrey Leiden who has is now stepping aside from the role after seven years as Chief executive at the Boston-based firm. In stepping down Leiden will serve as executive chairman until the first quarter of 2023.     

Fourty-six year old Dr Kewalramani, who has been at Vertex since 2017, will thus become the first woman to head the firm. Prior to joining Vertex, Kewalramani spent more than 12 years at Amgen.

The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has given its recommendation for the approval of Kalydeco for the treatment of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis in a new indication, Vertex has revealed.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals announced a plan late Tuesday to begin trials before the end of the year of the third in its so-called “triple combo” of pills designed to treat as much as 90 percent of the 75,000 patients worldwide who suffer from cystic fibrosis. That news, announced in conjunction with the Boston-based drugmaker’s third-quarter financial results last night, spurred a 6 percent stock increase after hours, implying the company’s market cap could increase by about half a billion dollars…
