Microsoft improves its Prism x86-on-ARM emulator

The current version of Windows on ARM contains Prism, Microsoft’s emulator that allows x86-64 code to run on ARM processors. While it was already relatively decent on the recent Snapdragon X platform, it could still be very hit-or-miss with what applications it would run, and especially games seemed to be problematic. As such, Microsoft has pushed out a major update to Prism that adds support for a whole bunch of extensions to the x86 architecture. This new support in Prism is already in limited use today in the retail version of Windows 11, version 24H2, where it enables the ability to run Adobe Premiere Pro 25 on Arm. Starting with Build 27744, the support is being opened to any x64 application under emulation. You may find some games or creative apps that were blocked due to CPU requirements before will be able to run using Prism on this build of Windows. At a technical level, the virtual CPU used by x64 emulated applications through Prism will now have support for additional extensions to the x86 instruction set architecture. These extensions include AVX and AVX2, as well as BMI, FMA, F16C, and others, that are not required to run Windows but have become sufficiently commonplace that some apps expect them to be present. You can see some of the new features in the output of a tool like Coreinfo64.exe. ↫ Amanda Langowski and Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows Blog Hopefully this makes running existing x86 applications that don’t yet have an ARM version a more reliable affair for Windows on ARM users.

Syntheses and structures of piperazin-1-ium ABr2 (A = Cs or Rb): hybrid solids containing `curtain wall' layers of face- and edge-sharing ABr6 trigonal prisms

The isostructural title compounds, poly[piperazin-1-ium [di-μ-bromido-caesium]], {(C4H11N2)[CsBr2]}n, and poly[piperazin-1-ium [di-μ-bromido-rubidium]], {(C4H11N2)[RbBr2]}n, contain singly-protonated piperazin-1-ium cations and unusual ABr6 (A = Cs or Rb) trigonal prisms. The prisms are linked into a distinctive `curtain wall' arrangement propagating in the (010) plane by face and edge sharing. In each case, a network of N—H⋯N, N—H⋯Br and N—H⋯(Br,Br) hydrogen bonds consolidates the structure.

Polishing the prism: improving wildfire mitigation planning by coupling landscape and social dimensions

Effectively addressing wildfire risk to communities on large multi-owner landscapes requires an understanding of the biophysical factors that influence risk, such as fuel loads, topography, and weather, and social factors such as the capacity and willingness for communities to engage in fire-mitigation activities.

Method and device to measure temperature of a prismatic cell of automotive battery

Apparatuses and methods of use are provided that include a battery cell comprising a flexible resistive thermal device. The resistive thermal device includes a flexible conductive circuit that is positioned on or adjacent to the surface of the battery cell. Resistance measured in the conductive circuit is correlated with a temperature of the battery cell thereby allowing control of a cooling system and/or the charging/discharging rates of the battery cell to be adjusted in response to temperature. Flexibility of the resistive thermal device also accommodates dimensional changes in the battery cell.

High Resolution Depth-Encoding PET Detector Module with Prismatoid Light Guide Array

Depth-encoding detectors with single-ended readout provide a practical, cost-effective approach for constructing high resolution and high sensitivity PET scanners. However, the current iteration of such detectors utilizes a uniform glass light guide to achieve depth-encoding, resulting in non-uniform performance throughout the detector array due to suboptimal intercrystal light sharing. We introduce Prism-PET, a single-ended readout PET detector module with a segmented light guide composed of an array of prismatoids that introduces enhanced, deterministic light sharing. Methods: High resolution PET detector modules were fabricated with single-ended readout of polished multicrystal lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) scintillator arrays directly coupled 4-to-1 and 9-to-1 to arrays of 3.2 x 3.2 mm2 silicon photomultiplier pixels. Each scintillator array was coupled at the non-readout side to a light guide (one 4-to-1 module with a uniform glass light guide, one 4-to-1 Prism-PET module and one 9-to-1 Prism-PET module) to introduce intercrystal light sharing, which closely mimics the behavior of dual-ended readout with the additional benefit of improved crystal identification. Flood histogram data was acquired using a 3 MBq Na-22 source to characterize crystal identification and energy resolution. Lead collimation was used to acquire data at specific depths to determine depth-of-interaction (DOI) resolution. Results: The flood histogram measurements showed excellent and uniform crystal separation throughout the Prism-PET modules while the uniform glass light guide module had performance degradation at the edges and corners. A DOI resolution of 5.0 mm full width at half maximum (FWHM) and energy resolution of 13% were obtained in the uniform glass light guide module. By comparison, the 4-to-1 coupled Prism-PET module achieved 2.5 mm FWHM DOI resolution and 9% energy resolution. Conclusion: PET scanners based on our Prism-PET modules with segmented prismatoid light guide arrays can achieve high and uniform spatial resolution (9-to-1 coupling with ~ 1 mm crystals), high sensitivity, good energy and timing resolutions (using polished crystals and after applying DOI-correction), and compact size (depth-encoding eliminates parallax error and permits smaller ring-diameter).

The progressive development of microfabrics from initial deposition to slump deformation: an example from a modern sedimenary melange on the Nankai Prism

The progressive development of microfabrics from initial deposition to slump deformation and then a submarine slide was investigated in an active subduction zone using cores recovered during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 333. A Pleistocene–Holocene sequence was recovered at Site C0018A, which was located on a slope basin on the footwall of the megasplay fault in the Nankai Trough, SW Japan. Six mass-transport deposit units intercalated with coherent intervals were recovered from the upper 190 m of the drilled succession. The initial microfabrics in the undeformed hemipelagic sediments were characterized by random and porous fabrics composed predominantly of clay aggregations and connectors. The initial fabrics were cardhouse fabrics, which consist of clay flakes with edge-to-edge (E–E) and/or edge-to-face (E–F) contacts. These initial microfabrics developed into compacted microfabrics, which are random and consolidated fabrics (bookhouse fabrics) that consist of clay flakes with E–F and/or face-to-face (F–F) contacts and develop during burial as a pure shear deformation. During slumping, these fabrics were then deformed under simple shear to become predominantly F–F contacts and form clay chains. Thus, the microfabrics in these submarine slides are a sedimentary mélange that developed locally into a preferred clay orientation with F–F contacts.
