ETSI NFV Release 4 empowers orchestration and cloud enabled deployments

ETSI NFV Release 4 empowers orchestration and cloud enabled deployments

Offers increased support for automation

Sophia Antipolis, 8 October 2019

The ETSI Industry Specification Group (ISG) for Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) has started working on its next specification release, known as Release 4. While NFV-based deployments are expanding worldwide and show the benefits of network function virtualization, new technologies are expected to be leveraged and features are being added in support of 5G and novel fixed access network deployments that are emerging in many countries. The release 4 work programme will provide the right setting to further enhance the NFV framework by considering recent technological advances, as well as ways to simplify its usage, that are aligned with the current trends in the industry towards network transformation.

ETSI Open Source MANO announces Release SIXTEEN, enabling cloud-native orchestration of cloud infrastructure and applications

Sophia Antipolis, 4 September 2024

The ETSI Open Source MANO community is proud to announce OSM Release SIXTEEN, a Long-Term-Support (LTS) release of ETSI OSM, which becomes the most innovative and feature-packed release shipped by OSM to date.

This release brings a revolution in OSM’s functionality, positioning OSM as a generalized cloud-native orchestrator for infrastructure, platforms and services, which extends significantly its former scope. Full cloud-native management of Kubernetes clusters in public clouds, together with the applications or software units running on them, is now possible with Release SIXTEEN. Every operation related to the cluster management (creation, upgrading, scaling, deletion) or the applications running on them is reflected in Git repositories, following the GitOps model. This has been possible thanks to a major change in the internal architecture of OSM.

Episode 351 - Bernd Rücker on Orchestrating Microservices with Workflow Management

Bernd Rücker, who has contributed to multiple open source workflow management projects, discusses orchestrating microservices with workflow management.  As distributed systems evolve into a family of microservices that must handle long-running stateful processes with time-dependent actions, events, multiple paths through the system, and complex rollbacks, the workflow management model provides a way to ensure clear modeling, correctness, and separation of concerns.   Rücker recommends a federated model in which each microservice is paired with its own workflow to handle retries and other policies and failure modes around that service.  Robert Blumen spoke with Rücker about microservice architecture, event-driven systems, long-running stateful processes versus synchronous request/response, event handling, time-outs, and handling exceptional conditions with compensating transactions. Rücker compares the choreography versus orchestration models for collaboration and discusses why orchestration provides a better separation of concerns.  The discussion delves into the implementation of workflow management systems including persistence, scaling, event handling, timers and scheduling, and similarities to CQRS.  The discussion wraps up with monitoring and visualization.

SE Radio 593: Eric Olden on Identity Orchestration

Eric Olden talks with host Giovanni Asproni about identity orchestration, a software approach for managing distributed identity and access management (IAM) and integrating multiple identity systems or providers (IDPs) to make them look like a single system from a user perspective. The episode starts with a refresher in identity and access management, then introduces identity orchestration and some of the challenges it helps to address, such as integrating disparate identity management systems after company mergers or acquisitions; managing identities in situations where some of the IAM systems are unreachable; and implementing more secure identity management in legacy applications. COP29 Climate Summit Day 2 Live: Azerbaijan is victim of ‘well-orchestrated campaign of slander and blackmail’, says President Aliyev

COP29 World Climate Action Summit Live Updates: At the COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, countries approved vital carbon credit quality standards essential for facilitating a U.N.-backed global carbon market aimed at funding greenhouse gas reduction projects. This early agreement marks a significant step forward, despite concerns about the upcoming U.S. administration under President-elect Donald Trump, who has indicated intentions to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. Experts suggest that the endorsement might help operationalize the market by next year, enabling countries and companies to purchase carbon credits for climate initiatives worldwide. However, while the approved standards seek to address the credibility of projects, campaigners have raised concerns about their adequacy, especially regarding human rights protections. Criticism also arose regarding the decision-making process, with some nations feeling excluded from discussions. Moving forward, negotiators aim to establish further rules to ensure the market’s integrity, which could potentially yield $250 billion annually and cut carbon emissions significantly by 2030.
