oñate OSCE Office in Tajikistan donates audio-visual material to enhance interactive teaching at Police Academy By feeds.osce.org Published On :: Fri, 29 Jul 2016 07:34:17 +0000 DUSHANBE, 29 July 2016 – The OSCE Office in Tajikistan today donated audio-visual equipment to the Police Academy of Tajikistan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs with the aim of supporting the Academy’s lecturers to use interactive teaching techniques on the investigation of crimes related to the trafficking of human beings. The equipment includes a computer, a projector, a screen, speakers, a printer, and an Uninterruptible Power Supply device (UPS). An external hard disk drive was also donated to allow for the storing of an electronic library of thematic video films and other informational resources in this field. “This equipment will improve the teaching of the Course on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, and will therefore enable the police to more effectively address this serious social problem,” said Fabio Piana, Deputy Head of the OSCE Office in Tajikistan. Karim Soliev, the first Deputy Director of the Police Academy, thanked the OSCE for its continued support in building the capacity of future law enforcement staff and Police Academy cadets in combating human trafficking and domestic violence in Tajikistan. “This equipment is of great help to lecturers who will now be able to apply more interactive teaching techniques,” he said. In previous years, the OSCE has provided expert support to the Police Academy, including the development of the Lecturer’s Guidelines on teaching this specialized and compulsory 20-hour course. oñate Mapping domain structures near a grain boundary in a lead zirconate titanate ferroelectric film using X-ray nanodiffraction By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-10-29 The effect of an electric field on local domain structure near a 24° tilt grain boundary in a 200 nm-thick Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3 bi-crystal ferroelectric film was probed using synchrotron nanodiffraction. The bi-crystal film was grown epitaxially on SrRuO3-coated (001) SrTiO3 24° tilt bi-crystal substrates. From the nanodiffraction data, real-space maps of the ferroelectric domain structure around the grain boundary prior to and during application of a 200 kV cm−1 electric field were reconstructed. In the vicinity of the tilt grain boundary, the distributions of densities of c-type tetragonal domains with the c axis aligned with the film normal were calculated on the basis of diffracted intensity ratios of c- and a-type domains and reference powder diffraction data. Diffracted intensity was averaged along the grain boundary, and it was shown that the density of c-type tetragonal domains dropped to ∼50% of that of the bulk of the film over a range ±150 nm from the grain boundary. This work complements previous results acquired by band excitation piezoresponse force microscopy, suggesting that reduced nonlinear piezoelectric response around grain boundaries may be related to the change in domain structure, as well as to the possibility of increased pinning of domain wall motion. The implications of the results and analysis in terms of understanding the role of grain boundaries in affecting the nonlinear piezoelectric and dielectric responses of ferroelectric materials are discussed. The Ni2+ cation in the complex is positioned on a twofold rotation axis and exhibits a slight tetragonal distortion of the cis-NiO4N2 octahedron, with an Ni—N bond length of 2.0782 (16) Å, and Ni—O bond lengths of 2.1170 (13) Å and 2.0648 (14) Å. The anion is completed by inversion symmetry. The asymmetric unit comprises one protonated 8HQ+ cation, half of an NDS2– dianion symmetrically disposed around a center of inversion, and two water molecules. Within the crystal structure, these components are organized into chains along the [010] and [10overline{1}] directions through O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding interactions, forming a di-periodic network parallel to (101). oñate Isostructural behaviour in ammonium and potassium salt forms of sulfonated azo dyes By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-02-15 The structures of five ammonium salt forms of monosulfonated azo dyes, derivatives of 4-(2-phenyldiazen-1-yl)benzenesulfonate, with the general formula [NH4][O3S(C6H4)NN(C6H3)RR']·XH2O [R = OH, NH2 or N(C2H4OH)2; R' = H or OH] are presented. All form simple layered structures with alternating hydrophobic (organic) and hydrophilic (cation, solvent and polar groups) layers. To assess for isostructural behaviour of the ammonium cation with M+ ions, the packing of these structures is compared with literature examples. To aid this comparison, the corresponding structures of four potassium salt forms of the monosulfonated azo dyes are also presented herein. Of the five ammonium salts it is found that three have isostructural equivalents. In two cases this equivalent is a potassium salt form and in one case it is a rubidium salt form. The isostructurality of ion packing and of unit-cell symmetry and dimensions tolerates cases where the ammonium ions form somewhat different interaction types with coformer species than do the potassium or rubidium ions. No sodium salt forms are found to be isostructural with any ammonium equivalent. However, similarities in the anion packing within a single hydrophobic layer are found for a group that consists of the ammonium and rubidium salt forms of one azo anion species and the sodium and silver salt forms of a different azo species. oñate Crystal structure elucidation of a geminal and vicinal bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) ester By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-06-14 Geminal and vicinal bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) esters are highly reactive alkylene synthons used as potent electrophiles in the macrocyclization of imidazoles and the transformation of bypyridines to diquat derivatives via nucleophilic substitution reactions. Herein we report the crystal structures of methylene (C3H2F6O6S2) and ethylene bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) (C4H4F6O6S2), the first examples of a geminal and vicinal bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) ester characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). With melting points slightly below ambient temperature, both reported bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate)s are air- and moisture-sensitive oils and were crystallized at 277 K to afford two-component non-merohedrally twinned crystals. The dominant interactions present in both compounds are non-classical C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and intermolecular C—F⋯F—C interactions between trifluoromethyl groups. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) calculations by DFT-D3 helped to quantify the polarity between O⋯H and F⋯F contacts to rationalize the self-sorting of both bis(trifluoromethanesulfonate) esters in polar (non-fluorous) and non-polar (fluorous) domains within the crystal structure. These assemblies are characterized by self-complementary donor–acceptor molecular interactions, demonstrating a recurrent and distinctive pattern of hydrogen-bonding preferences among the carboxylate, carboxylic acid and N—H groups of the coordinated 2,2'-biimidazole and malonate ligands. Additionally, coordination of the carboxylate group with the metallic centre helps sustain remarkable supramolecular assemblies, such as layers, helices, double helix columns or 3D channeled architectures, including mixed-metal complexes, into a single structure. oñate Characterization of novel mevalonate kinases from the tardigrade Ramazzottius varieornatus and the psychrophilic archaeon Methanococcoides burtonii By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-02-27 Mevalonate kinase is central to the isoprenoid biosynthesis pathway. Here, high-resolution X-ray crystal structures of two mevalonate kinases are presented: a eukaryotic protein from Ramazzottius varieornatus and an archaeal protein from Methanococcoides burtonii. Both enzymes possess the highly conserved motifs of the GHMP enzyme superfamily, with notable differences between the two enzymes in the N-terminal part of the structures. Biochemical characterization of the two enzymes revealed major differences in their sensitivity to geranyl pyrophosphate and farnesyl pyrophosphate, and in their thermal stabilities. This work adds to the understanding of the structural basis of enzyme inhibition and thermostability in mevalonate kinases. Full Article text
