Google Brings Back Archived Page Links

Google is to make it easier to find copies of pages that are no longer available on websites. The change comes several months after Google removed its own cache of web pages. Users will instead be able to follow a link to the archived copy at the Internet Archive's "wayback machine." Before this year, many Google search results included a link to Google's own cached copies of web pages. These were the copies that Google made when scanning a web page for content and links to help decide when and where it should appear in search rankings. The cached copy available in the search results would ... (view more)

Wikipedia: Domesday Book 1086 A.D. - The "Domesday Book" now held at The National Archives, Kew, Richmond upon Thames in South West London, is the record of the great survey of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 - The survey wa

One of the main purposes of the survey was to determine who held what and what taxes had been liable under Edward the Confessor; the judgment of the Domesday assessors was final-whatever the book said about who held the material wealth or what it was worth, was the law, and there was no appeal. It was written in Latin, although there were some vernacular words inserted for native terms with no previous Latin equivalent, and the text was highly abbreviated. Richard FitzNigel, writing around the year 1179, stated that the book was known by the English as "Domesday", that is the Day of Judgment "for as the sentence of that strict and terrible last account cannot be evaded by any skilful subterfuge, so when this book is appealed to ... its sentence cannot be put quashed or set aside with impunity. That is why we have called the book 'the Book of Judgment' ... because its decisions, like those of the Last Judgment, are unalterable." In August 2006 a limited online version of Domesday Book was made available by the United Kingdom's National Archives, charging users £2 per page to view the manuscript. In 2011, the Domesday Map site made the manuscript freely available for the first time.

New Hives: Rigor Mortis Radio

Video: The Hives – “Rigor Mortis Radio”

Directed by Filip Nilsson. From The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, out now.

Remember when CGI was just CGI and not A.I.?

Or maybe the Hives are just really good dancers. It’s possible. Things are very groovy in Sweden and the people are very healthy and nimble. So you never know.

(Journalistic integrity spoiler: You, in fact, do know. The actual dancers — Alex Brown, Tom Hardiman, Connor Pearson, Reece Woodier, and Jacob Whawell — are credited in the video.)

I’ve seen the Hives in concert several times and their natural moves are impressive enough. Do they really need to employ deepfake technology to impress us even more? Maybe they do, because this video is fun and hilarious. And of course the song is great too.

But, like with all computer generated imagery, you find yourself looking for the glitches and cruising down the uncanny valley. It’s real looking enough, but not totally convincing, which makes it a little creepy. And, unsurprisingly, that creepiness factor works with the song’s lyrics.

You’ve never seen me look so good before
This silver lining and this golden glow
This shine, all mine
Looking like I’m fresh off an assembly line.

12C: IN DATABASE ARCHIVING

In this post, I will demonstrate a new feature introduced in 12c : In database archiving. It enables you to archive rows within a table by marking them as invisible. This is accomplshed  by means of a hidden column ORA_ARCHIVE_STATE. These invisible rows are not visible to the queries but if needed, can be viewed , by setting a session parameter ROW ARCHIVAL VISIBILITY.

Overview:

-- Create test user uilm, tablespace ilmtbs
-- Connect as user uilm
-- create and populate test table (5 rows) ilmtab with row archival clause
-- Note that the table has an additional column ORA_ARCHIVE_STATE automatically created   and has the default value of 0 (indicates that row is active)
-- Note that this column is not visible when we describe the table or simply issue select * from ...
-- We need to access data dictionary to view the column
-- Make two  rows in the table inactive by setting ORA_ARCHIVE_STATE column to a non zero value.
-- Check that inactive rows are not visible to query
-- Set the parameter ROW ARCHIVAL VISIBILITY  = all to see inactive rows also
-- Set the parameter ROW ARCHIVAL VISIBILITY  = active to hide inactive rows
-- Issue an insert into ... select * and check that only 3 visible rows are inserted
-- Set the parameter ROW ARCHIVAL VISIBILITY  = all to see inactive rows also
-- Issue an insert into ... select * and check that all the rows are inserted but ORA_ARCHIVE_STATE    is not propagated in inserted rows
-- Disable row archiving in the table and check that column ORA_ARCHIVE_STATE is automatically dropped
-- drop tablespace ilmtbs and user uilm

Implementation :

-- Create test user, tablespace and test table

Military Transition Ideas - Our Archives

Check Our Monthly Archive Links

If you're new to our military transition blog, be sure to check our
monthly archive links. For some strange reason, our individual
archives aren't updating, yet our monthly archives are loaded
with ideas.

This blog has been around for way over a year and many of the
Career Fair links are still good. Take time and click through our
Monthly Archives for Military Transition Ideas and
Career Fairs/Job Fairs.

Continual Reminder for Copies of Records:

Be sure to request copies of all military personnel records,
medical records, and dental records prior to your T.A.P.S.
Briefings. Your military evaluations hold the keys to writing
your civilian resume and you may be entitled to some sort
of medical disability.

The only way to determine if you're entitled to a military
disability is to have your medical records screened by
Veterans Affairs. Some bases, posts, or stations will ensure
that you bring a copy of your medical and dental records
to your T.A.P.S. briefings for an initial review. Seriously consider
having all records reviewed prior to leaving the military. This
will speed up your disablity claim.

For more information, contact your Military Transition Office
on your base/post. Read through our monthly archives for
additional information as well.
