eeg Spatiotemporal Neural Network for Sublexical Information Processing: An Intracranial SEEG Study By www.jneurosci.org Published On :: 2024-11-06T09:30:07-08:00 Words offer a unique opportunity to separate the processing mechanisms of object subcomponents from those of the whole object, because the phonological or semantic information provided by the word subcomponents (i.e., sublexical information) can conflict with that provided by the whole word (i.e., lexical information). Previous studies have revealed some of the specific brain regions and temporal information involved in sublexical information processing. However, a comprehensive spatiotemporal neural network for sublexical processing remains to be fully elucidated due to the low temporal or spatial resolutions of previous neuroimaging studies. In this study, we recorded stereoelectroencephalography signals with high spatial and temporal resolutions from a large sample of 39 epilepsy patients (both sexes) during a Chinese character oral reading task. We explored the activated brain regions and their connectivity related to three sublexical effects: phonological regularity (whether the whole character's pronunciation aligns with its phonetic radical), phonological consistency (whether characters with the same phonetic radical share the same pronunciation), and semantic transparency (whether the whole character's meaning aligns with its semantic radical). The results revealed that sublexical effects existed in the inferior frontal gyrus, precentral and postcentral gyri, temporal lobe, and middle occipital gyrus. Additionally, connectivity from the middle occipital gyrus to the postcentral gyrus and from postcentral gyrus to the fusiform gyrus was associated with the sublexical effects. These findings provide valuable insights into the spatiotemporal dynamics of sublexical processing and object recognition in the brain. Full Article

eeg Prediction of Event Related Potential Speller Performance Using Resting-State EEG. (arXiv:2005.01325v3 [cs.HC] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Event-related potential (ERP) speller can be utilized in device control and communication for locked-in or severely injured patients. However, problems such as inter-subject performance instability and ERP-illiteracy are still unresolved. Therefore, it is necessary to predict classification performance before performing an ERP speller in order to use it efficiently. In this study, we investigated the correlations with ERP speller performance using a resting-state before an ERP speller. In specific, we used spectral power and functional connectivity according to four brain regions and five frequency bands. As a result, the delta power in the frontal region and functional connectivity in the delta, alpha, gamma bands are significantly correlated with the ERP speller performance. Also, we predicted the ERP speller performance using EEG features in the resting-state. These findings may contribute to investigating the ERP-illiteracy and considering the appropriate alternatives for each user. Full Article
eeg Transfer Learning for EEG-Based Brain-Computer Interfaces: A Review of Progress Made Since 2016. (arXiv:2004.06286v3 [cs.HC] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables a user to communicate with a computer directly using brain signals. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) used in BCIs are weak, easily contaminated by interference and noise, non-stationary for the same subject, and varying across different subjects and sessions. Therefore, it is difficult to build a generic pattern recognition model in an EEG-based BCI system that is optimal for different subjects, during different sessions, for different devices and tasks. Usually, a calibration session is needed to collect some training data for a new subject, which is time consuming and user unfriendly. Transfer learning (TL), which utilizes data or knowledge from similar or relevant subjects/sessions/devices/tasks to facilitate learning for a new subject/session/device/task, is frequently used to reduce the amount of calibration effort. This paper reviews journal publications on TL approaches in EEG-based BCIs in the last few years, i.e., since 2016. Six paradigms and applications -- motor imagery, event-related potentials, steady-state visual evoked potentials, affective BCIs, regression problems, and adversarial attacks -- are considered. For each paradigm/application, we group the TL approaches into cross-subject/session, cross-device, and cross-task settings and review them separately. Observations and conclusions are made at the end of the paper, which may point to future research directions. Full Article
eeg Decoding EEG Rhythms During Action Observation, Motor Imagery, and Execution for Standing and Sitting. (arXiv:2004.04107v2 [cs.HC] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Event-related desynchronization and synchronization (ERD/S) and movement-related cortical potential (MRCP) play an important role in brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for lower limb rehabilitation, particularly in standing and sitting. However, little is known about the differences in the cortical activation between standing and sitting, especially how the brain's intention modulates the pre-movement sensorimotor rhythm as they do for switching movements. In this study, we aim to investigate the decoding of continuous EEG rhythms during action observation (AO), motor imagery (MI), and motor execution (ME) for standing and sitting. We developed a behavioral task in which participants were instructed to perform both AO and MI/ME in regard to the actions of sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit. Our results demonstrated that the ERD was prominent during AO, whereas ERS was typical during MI at the alpha band across the sensorimotor area. A combination of the filter bank common spatial pattern (FBCSP) and support vector machine (SVM) for classification was used for both offline and pseudo-online analyses. The offline analysis indicated the classification of AO and MI providing the highest mean accuracy at 82.73$pm$2.38\% in stand-to-sit transition. By applying the pseudo-online analysis, we demonstrated the higher performance of decoding neural intentions from the MI paradigm in comparison to the ME paradigm. These observations led us to the promising aspect of using our developed tasks based on the integration of both AO and MI to build future exoskeleton-based rehabilitation systems. Full Article

Full Article
Full Article

eeg Deep transfer learning for improving single-EEG arousal detection. (arXiv:2004.05111v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Datasets in sleep science present challenges for machine learning algorithms due to differences in recording setups across clinics. We investigate two deep transfer learning strategies for overcoming the channel mismatch problem for cases where two datasets do not contain exactly the same setup leading to degraded performance in single-EEG models. Specifically, we train a baseline model on multivariate polysomnography data and subsequently replace the first two layers to prepare the architecture for single-channel electroencephalography data. Using a fine-tuning strategy, our model yields similar performance to the baseline model (F1=0.682 and F1=0.694, respectively), and was significantly better than a comparable single-channel model. Our results are promising for researchers working with small databases who wish to use deep learning models pre-trained on larger databases. Full Article
eeg Maximum Independent Component Analysis with Application to EEG Data By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Tue, 03 Mar 2020 04:00 EST Ruosi Guo, Chunming Zhang, Zhengjun Zhang. Source: Statistical Science, Volume 35, Number 1, 145--157.Abstract: In many scientific disciplines, finding hidden influential factors behind observational data is essential but challenging. The majority of existing approaches, such as the independent component analysis (${mathrm{ICA}}$), rely on linear transformation, that is, true signals are linear combinations of hidden components. Motivated from analyzing nonlinear temporal signals in neuroscience, genetics, and finance, this paper proposes the “maximum independent component analysis” (${mathrm{MaxICA}}$), based on max-linear combinations of components. In contrast to existing methods, ${mathrm{MaxICA}}$ benefits from focusing on significant major components while filtering out ignorable components. A major tool for parameter learning of ${mathrm{MaxICA}}$ is an augmented genetic algorithm, consisting of three schemes for the elite weighted sum selection, randomly combined crossover, and dynamic mutation. Extensive empirical evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of ${mathrm{MaxICA}}$ in either extracting max-linearly combined essential sources in many applications or supplying a better approximation for nonlinearly combined source signals, such as $mathrm{EEG}$ recordings analyzed in this paper. eeg Neural Evidence for the Prediction of Animacy Features during Language Comprehension: Evidence from MEG and EEG Representational Similarity Analysis By www.jneurosci.org Published On :: 2020-04-15T09:30:18-07:00 It has been proposed that people can generate probabilistic predictions at multiple levels of representation during language comprehension. We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG), in combination with representational similarity analysis, to seek neural evidence for the prediction of animacy features. In two studies, MEG and EEG activity was measured as human participants (both sexes) read three-sentence scenarios. Verbs in the final sentences constrained for either animate or inanimate semantic features of upcoming nouns, and the broader discourse context constrained for either a specific noun or for multiple nouns belonging to the same animacy category. We quantified the similarity between spatial patterns of brain activity following the verbs until just before the presentation of the nouns. The MEG and EEG datasets revealed converging evidence that the similarity between spatial patterns of neural activity following animate-constraining verbs was greater than following inanimate-constraining verbs. This effect could not be explained by lexical-semantic processing of the verbs themselves. We therefore suggest that it reflected the inherent difference in the semantic similarity structure of the predicted animate and inanimate nouns. Moreover, the effect was present regardless of whether a specific word could be predicted, providing strong evidence for the prediction of coarse-grained semantic features that goes beyond the prediction of individual words. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Language inputs unfold very quickly during real-time communication. By predicting ahead, we can give our brains a "head start," so that language comprehension is faster and more efficient. Although most contexts do not constrain strongly for a specific word, they do allow us to predict some upcoming information. For example, following the context of "they cautioned the...," we can predict that the next word will be animate rather than inanimate (we can caution a person, but not an object). Here, we used EEG and MEG techniques to show that the brain is able to use these contextual constraints to predict the animacy of upcoming words during sentence comprehension, and that these predictions are associated with specific spatial patterns of neural activity. eeg EEG for Predicting Early Neurodevelopment in Preterm Infants: An Observational Cohort Study By pediatrics.aappublications.org Published On :: 2012-09-03T00:07:28-07:00 Previous studies suggest that abnormal findings on conventional EEG during the neonatal period are associated with death or severe brain injury in preterm infants. However, large cohort studies on preterm EEG for predicting later neurodevelopmental outcome remain scarce. This study demonstrates precise prognostic values of conventional EEG for predicting neurodevelopmental outcome in the current perinatal care setting. Additionally, its prognostic values are independent of severe injury on neuroimaging and clinical risk factors. (Read the full article) Full Article

Currently there is no direct evidence that EEG monitoring, seizure identification, or treatment impacts long-term outcomes. In neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, EEG monitoring and treatment of electrographic seizures results in significant reduction in seizure burden. Increasing seizure burden is associated with more severe brain injury and significantly lower performance scores on Bayley Scales of Infant Development III. (Read the full article) Full Article
