How the Natural History Museum is Scanning 80 Million Dead Creatures

The Natural History Museum in London has set itself the mammoth task of digitising its specimens - all 80 million of them. The museum's collection includes everything from a blue whale skeleton to Martian meteorites, making progress understandably slow. Head of Informatics Vince Smith says it would take around 1,500 years for the team to manually digitise it all, so in 2014 they decided to write software that allows them to do it in bulk. They now use six DSLR cameras to process up to 200 items at a time. WIRED went behind the scenes to meet the researchers working on the project and learn more about how they digitise the different specimens.

Bottom-dwelling creatures in the Chesapeake Bay need more oxygen, study finds.

A recent survey of the bottom-dwelling animals of the Chesapeake has revealed that communities of even these relatively hardy organisms are under stress. Many regions of the bay are becoming inhospitable to bottom-dwelling animals because of a lack of oxygen—a condition known as “hypoxia.”

Nanoplastics damage marine creatures’ natural defences, increasing lethal effects of POPs

Nano-sized particles of plastic can be more damaging to marine species than larger sized microplastics, a new study shows. Lab tests revealed that nanoplastics can damage cell membranes in tiny marine creatures called rotifers (Rotifera), disrupting their natural defences against toxicants. The researchers found that rotifers that had been exposed to nanoparticles of polystyrene were significantly more susceptible to the lethal effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Iowa's Furry Wetland Creatures

While schools are closed, we're creating a series of "Talk of Iowa" episodes that will be fun and educational for learners of all ages. Every Tuesday, we'll learn about Iowa wildlife, and every Thursday, we'll learn about Iowa history. The animals we’ll learn about on this edition of Talk of Iowa excel at swimming, holding their breaths and have coats that humans envy. Wildlife biologist Jim Pease will introduce listeners to some of the hairy critters that make their homes in Iowa’s wetlands. We’ll learn about muskrats and beavers, two members of the rodent family that may look a little clumsy on land, but move with precision and ease in the water. Beavers are known as nature’s engineers for their incredible lodges and dams, but muskrats are also good builders. Minks and river otters belong to the mustelid family. The two species resemble each other with their glossy coats and long bodies, but river otters are much larger than minks. Unlike the primarily vegetarian muskrat and beaver

Prehistoric sea creatures evolved pebble-shaped teeth to crush shellfish

Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles during the time of the dinosaurs, and scientists don't know much about their ancestry. But by CT-scanning the fossil of one of the first ichthyosaurs, scientists discovered pebble-shaped teeth hidden in its short snout. These strange teeth, probably used for crushing the shells of snails and clam-like bivalves, help illuminate the ways that early ichthyosaurs filled different roles in Triassic marine ecosystems.
