Naming Conventions and Coding Standards

ArtinSoft’s top seller product, the Visual Basic Upgrade Companion is daily improved by the Product Department to satisfy the requirements of the currently executed migration projects . The project driven research methodology allows our company to deliver custom solutions to our customers needs, and more importantly, to enhance our products capabilities with all the research done for this purposes. Our company’s largest customer engaged our consulting department requesting for a customization over the VBUC to generate specific naming patterns in the resulting source code. To be more specific, the resulting source code must comply with some specific naming code standards plus a mappings customization for a 3rd party control (FarPoint’s FPSpread). This request pushed ArtinSoft to re-architect the VBUC's renaming engine, which was capable at the moment, to rename user declarations in some scenarios (.NET reserved keywords, collisions and more). The re-architecture consisted in a centralization of the renaming rules into a single-layered engine. Those rules was extracted from the Companion’s parser and mapping files and relocated into a renaming declaration library. The most important change is that the renaming engine now evaluates every declaration instead of only the conflictive ones. This enhanced renaming mechanism generates a new name for each conflictive declaration and returns the unchanged declaration otherwise. The renaming engine can literally “filter” all the declarations and fix possible renaming issues. But the story is not finished here; thanks to our company’s proprietary language technology (Kablok) the renaming engine is completely extensible. Jafet Welsh, from the product development department, is a member of the team who implemented the new renaming engine and the extensibility library, and he explained some details about this technology: “…The extensibility library seamlessly integrates new rules (written in Kablok) into the renaming engine… we described a series of rules for classes, variables, properties and other user declarations to satisfy our customer's code standards using the renaming engine extensibility library… and we plan to add support for a rules-describing mechanism to allow the users to write renaming rules on their own…” ArtinSoft incorporated the renaming engine for the VBUC version 2.1 and for version 2.2 the extensibility library will be completed.

py_convrot: rotation conventions, to understand and to apply

Rotation is a core crystallographic operation. Two sets of Cartesian coordinates of each point of a rotated object, those before and after rotation, are linearly related, and the coefficients of these linear combinations can be represented in matrix form. This 3 × 3 matrix is unique for all points and thus describes unambiguously a particular rotation. However, its nine elements are mutually dependent and are not interpretable in a straightforward way. To describe rotations by independent and comprehensible parameters, crystallographic software usually refers to Euler or to polar angles. In crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy, there exists a large choice of conventions, making direct comparison of rotation parameters difficult and sometimes confusing. The program py_convrot, written in Python, is a converter of parameters describing rotations. In particular, it deals with all possible choices of polar angles and with all kinds of Euler angles, including all choices of rotation axes and rotation directions. Using a menu, a user can build their own rotation parameterization; its action can be viewed with an interactive graphical tool, Demo. The tables in this article and the extended help pages of the program describe details of these parameterizations and the decomposition of rotation matrices into all types of parameters. The program allows orthogonalization conventions and symmetry operations to be taken into account. This makes the program and its supporting materials both an illustrative teaching material, especially for non-specialists in mathematics and computing, and a tool for practical use.

Seventy Years of the Geneva Conventions: What of the Future?

24 March 2020

Seventy years after the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, there are challenges that remain to be addressed. This briefing takes three pertinent examples, and discusses possibilities for addressing them.

Summary

  • The 70th anniversary of the adoption of the 1949 Geneva Conventions was commemorated in 2019. But violations of the Conventions and of the 1977 Additional Protocols are widespread.
  • Contemporary conflicts have been marked by violations of some of the foundational rules of international humanitarian law (IHL) relating to the protection of the wounded and sick and of providers of medical assistance.
  • A further area of IHL that has come under strain and scrutiny are the rules regulating humanitarian relief operations and their application to sieges and blockades.
  • War has a huge impact on children, and the treatment of children in armed conflict is another area of the law that requires further attention.
  • In the current political climate, it is unlikely that new treaties will be negotiated to address emerging issues or uncertainties in the law.
  • Other measures must be explored, including the adoption of domestic measures to implement existing law; support for processes that interpret the law; and initiatives to promote compliance with the law by organized armed groups.
  • One overarching challenge is the interplay between IHL and counterterrorism measures. It can undermine the protections set out in IHL, and hinder principled humanitarian action and activities to promote compliance with the law by organized armed groups.

PMC Bulk Download via FTP is Now Using New Naming Conventions

A large-scale update of the file names used for articles available via the PMC FTP service for bulk download was undertaken in early January 2017. The new file naming convention is PMCID-based (e.g., PMC4855680.tar.gz) rather than being built from article citation data (i.e., journal abbreviation_pub date_volume_issue_page). This update was made following user reports that the previous naming convention was resulting in missing contents in cases where citation data was duplicated across multiple articles. The new convention will ensure that file names are unique and that the corpus available via the FTP service is complete.
