Challenges in Designing Curriculum for Trans-Disciplinary Education: On Cases of Designing Concentration on Informing Science and Master Program on Data Science

Aim/Purpose: The growing complexity of the business environment and business processes as well as the Big Data phenomenon has an impact on every area of human activity nowadays. This new reality challenges the effectiveness of traditional narrowly oriented professional education. New areas of competences emerged as a synergy of multiple knowledge areas – transdisciplines. Informing Science and Data Science are just the first two such new areas we may identify as transdisciplines. Universities are facing the challenge to educate students for those new realities. Background: The purpose of the paper is to share the authors’ experience in designing curriculum for training bachelor students in Informing Science as a concentration within an Information Brokerage major, and a master program on Data Science. Methodology: Designing curriculum for transdisciplines requires diverse expertise obtained by both academia and industries and passed through several stages - identifying objectives, conceptualizing curriculum models, identifying content, and development pedagogical priorities. Contribution: Sharing our experience acquired in designing transdiscipline programs will contribute to a transition from a narrow professional education towards addressing 21st-century challenges. Findings: Analytical skills, combined with training in all categories of so-called “soft skills”, are essential in preparing students for a successful career in a transdiciplinary area of activities. Recommendations for Practitioners: Establishing a working environment encouraging not only sharing but close cooperation is essential nowadays. Recommendations for Researchers: There are two aspects of training professionals capable of succeeding in a transdisciplinary environment: encouraging mutual respect and developing out-of-box thinking. Impact on Society: The transition of higher education in a way to meet current challenges. Future Research The next steps in this research are to collect feedback regarding the professional careers of students graduating in these two programs and to adjust the curriculum accordingly.

Mapping of lithium ion concentrations in 3D structures through development of in situ correlative imaging of X-ray Compton scattering-computed tomography

Understanding the correlation between chemical and microstructural properties is critical for unraveling the fundamental relationship between materials chemistry and physical structures that can benefit materials science and engineering. Here, we demonstrate novel in situ correlative imaging of the X-ray Compton scattering computed tomography (XCS-CT) technique for studying this fundamental relationship. XCS-CT can image light elements that do not usually exhibit strong signals using other X-ray characterization techniques. This paper describes the XCS-CT setup and data analysis method for calculating the valence electron momentum density and lithium-ion concentration, and provides two examples of spatially and temporally resolved chemical properties inside batteries in 3D. XCS-CT was applied to study two types of rechargeable lithium batteries in standard coin cell casings: (1) a lithium-ion battery containing a cathode of bespoke microstructure and liquid electrolyte, and (2) a solid-state battery containing a solid-polymer electrolyte. The XCS-CT technique is beneficial to a wide variety of materials and systems to map chemical composition changes in 3D structures.

Q&A: Sovereign Exposure Exchanges Allow MDBs to Reduce Portfolio Concentration Risks

A sovereign exposure exchange is a cost-effective risk management tool used by multilateral development banks (MDBs) to reduce sovereign portfolio concentration risks. It provides capital relief for MDBs by exchanging loan guarantees on credit exposure from borrowing countries where an MDB is highly concentrated for exposure to countries where the MBD’s exposure is lower or nonexistent.

Investigations into the Concentrations and Metabolite Profiles of Doping Agents and Antidepressants in Human Seminal Fluid Using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry [Articles]

Exogenous substances, including drugs and chemicals, can transfer into human seminal fluid and influence male fertility and reproduction. In addition, substances relevant in the context of sports drug testing programs, can be transferred into the urine of a female athlete (after unprotected sexual intercourse) and trigger a so-called adverse analytical finding. Here, the question arises as to whether it is possible to distinguish analytically between intentional doping offenses and unintentional contamination of urine by seminal fluid. To this end, 480 seminal fluids from nonathletes were analyzed to identify concentration ranges and metabolite profiles of therapeutic drugs that are also classified as doping agents. Therefore, a screening procedure was developed using liquid chromatography connected to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, and suspect samples (i.e., samples indicating the presence of relevant compounds) were further subjected to liquid chromatography-high-resolution accurate mass (tandem) mass spectrometry. The screening method yielded 90 findings (including aromatase inhibitors, selective estrogen receptor modulators, diuretics, stimulants, glucocorticoids, beta-blockers, antidepressants, and the nonapproved proliferator-activated receptor delta agonist GW1516) in a total of 81 samples, with 91% of these suspected cases being verified by the confirmation method. In addition to the intact drug, phase-I and -II metabolites were also occasionally observed in the seminal fluid. This study demonstrated that various drugs including those categorized as doping agents partition into seminal fluid. Monitoring substances and metabolites may contribute to a better understanding of the distribution and metabolism of exogenous substances in seminal fluid that may be responsible for the impairment of male fertility.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT

This study demonstrates that doping agents as well as clinically relevant substances are transferred/eliminated into seminal fluid to a substantial extent and that knowledge about drug levels (and potential consequences for the male fertility and female exposure) is limited. The herein generated new dataset provides new insights into an important and yet little explored area of drug deposition and elimination, and hereby a basis for the assessment of contamination cases by seminal fluid in sports drug testing.
