Comments dead

I just got an email from my hosting company…apparently the old Movable Type comment script is causing some sort of server malfunction, so they’ve disabled all comments on this site.

Since I refuse to pay for the new version of MT, I may end up doing what I’ve been thinking about for a while: namely, switching to WordPress or some other alternative. Which seems to be the thing to do these days, anyway. Fortunately, spring break is coming up next week, so I may actually have some free time to wrestle with it.

In the meantime, feel free to email any comments you may have.

Drifter's Comments - Bitte Ein Bit

Tags:

It's been a while since I've been able to post to this great blog of memoirs. When I first saw the web site for Bitburb Air Base Germany (previous post), I realized how much I used to really love Germany.

Being stationed in Germany was like living in a fairy tale. There was so much to do and see. I've never played so much spades, dominoes, backgammon, or shot pool in my life. Can you believe there was beer in the vending machines in the dormitory?? For $1 you could by a can of Heineken!!

Living in the dormitories over there was a blast. My first week there I think I went to a Toga Party in the Security Police Dorm lol. I made sure I was fully clothed under the Toga because I had heard so many rumors about Toga Parties lol.

Dormitory life was really fun. I remember being introduced to Milk and Apple Schnapps. Milk Schnapps was an unsual drink and I remember it looked like watered down milk and it was really good.

Well, hope I can run across the great people I knew at Bitburg. We had a really great time.

On the previous post, one of the sites has pictures of how Bitburg looks now. The whole base has been transformed. The church is now a club if my memory serves me right. The gate is gone yet, many of the buildings are still there. Oh how I wish the base didn't close. Great Place. Great Times.

Belize Guest Comments - March 2012

March 3, 2012

Our three days at the Jungle Dome have been wonderful; such fun (the adventures and mingling with the other guests); such comfort (the beds and rooms, and lounging around the delightful pool), and such hospitality (Andy, Simone, Lucas & Aidan, and Rocky & Luke, are all so friendly, they make it feel like a home away from home).

Although this is our third visit to Belize, it is our first to Cayo, and what a pleasure it is to discover this part of this beautiful country.

Many thanks to the Hunt family, to the ladies- the food was delicious and every detail was taken care of in our room- to all the other staff who made the Jungle Dome so special, and particularly to David and Mynor and to the cowboy Sherman, who made me so proud by saying that I was the oldest person who had ever cantered when horse riding with him!

Rosalind and Richard Hinman, New Haven, Connecticut, USA

March 22, 2012

I can ‘ditto’ the above comments. Three great days! What a wonderful visit, such wonderful hospitality, including Aidan & Lucas, who were amazing hosts to my boys Matt & Nick, showing them around and engaging them in all the activities Jungle Dome has to offer ;

  • tree climbing,
  • frog and lizard hunting & capturing,
  • basketball,
  • chicken catching…
what a unique experience and one to remember! Plus, great food, guides, and accommodation. Thanks you so much for great memories!

Belize Guest Comments - May 2012 - Belize Jungle Dome

19th May, 2012

We can't thank you enough for the amazing week we've had. The Jungle Dome looked great on the website, but it is only when you arrive that you realize what a special place it is. It's rare to find a place in such a beautiful setting with so many places to see and activities to do in such a close distance.

We enjoyed every second; from the horseback ride through the jungle, boat ride down the river, the Black Hole Drop, cave tubing, etc. Also, we are so glad that we spotted a comment in the comment book about David's night time jungle walk- it was brilliant. The overnight stay in the cave was loads of fun too.

Most of all, thank you to Andy, Simone, David, Mynor & the rest of the staff here for making us feel so welcome, comfortable & part of the Jungle Dome family during our stay. Every aspect was amazing and - like I said at the start- we can't thank you enough. You have a special place & we will spread the word in England for you.

It is sad to leave, but nice to go knowing that we have made so many new friends!

Thanks again, Lee & Natalie, UK

May 21, 2012 Dear Jungle Dome,

Wow! What an amazing week! Jungle Dome far exceeded all of our expectations and the bar high for the rest of our trip. The staff here are amazing and truly made the experience for us. It felt like we were among friends, not resort staff, all week.

The food was incredible, the lodge is beautiful, and the experiences in the jungle were life changing and unforgettable! We will definitely be recommending this place with raving reviews to our friends and family, and hope to make it back here in the future!

Jen & Colin, Vancouver, Canada

Belize Guest Comments - Scott and Tanya from Winston-Salem, North Caroline, USA

The Jungle Dome will always be special in our memories for many reasons:

  •  Friendly staff and excellent food! (Loved the fresh orange juice and the fry jacks for breakfast)
  • Clean and comfortable room (Loved the fridge and coffee maker)
  • Beautiful surroundings and wonderful sounds of the jungle (Orange trees, flowers, howler monkeys, horses galloping, and birds, plus roosters too!)
  • Refreshing pool and relaxing hammocks…aahhhh!
  • Daytrips to the ruins, cave tubing with David, the Blue Hole to swim, and driving on the beautiful Hummingbird Highway.
  • Also, the visit to Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio, was lots of fun (I think I’ve already taken over 1000 photos in three days)

·         Most importantly, the Jungle Dome will be forever in our memory, because this us where we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary.

Thanks for sharing your piece of paradise in Belize, that we plan on sharing with our own friends and family through stories, pictures, and memories.

Best wishes for the future,

Scott & Tonya Craver
Winston-Salem, NC, USA. July 2013

P.S. Our kids would have loved the basketball goal and soccer field...guess we might just have to bring them next time!

Changes to user comments on CBCNews.CA

Changes to user comments on CBCNews.CA

In response to your feedback, we have made changes to make commenting on our news stories a better experience.

1. Approving and recommending comments

It can be a challenge to provide an open space for Canadians to debate and share their opinions on the news, and maintain that space as one where people feel safe and comfortable. As a result of your feedback, we have tightened up our submission guidelines. More borderline comments are now not published.

As always, if you see a comment that you feel contravenes our guidelines, click on the “report abuse” link below the comment. Our moderators will give the flagged comment a second review. We have recently added a link to our submissions policy beside the “report abuse” link.

If you simply disagree with the viewpoint expressed, you can now give it a “thumbs down.” We have reworked the existing “recommend a comment” functionality in response to user requests for the ability to “un-recommend” a comment.

2. When guidelines aren’t followed

We have always banned the most problematic users who fail to follow our guidelines, but we have also started to use a temporary suspension, or “time out.” For users that fail to follow the guidelines, we block their input to the site for 3 business days by rendering it invisible to other users. We'll still see any new posts, and can decide to lift the suspension after the “time out” period, or to ban the user.

3. When comments are disabled on news articles

Lastly, we do want to acknowledge that not all types of articles will include comments.

When we do an article on a death of an individual, we have seen comments submitted that are needlessly hurtful to the family of the deceased. To respect their loss, we disable commenting on these articles. We also disable commenting on court proceedings that involve a publication ban, and articles related to abductions, as we don't want to inadvertently publish any input that would be helpful for the abductors.

The CBC.ca moderators are working on more improvements to our commenting section that we hope to launch over the coming year. For more details, see Your Best Stuff.

comments

Why are comments not allowed on certain news stories?

In some situations, we disable commenting on stories. We do so by following certain criteria, such as if the comments may cause harm, or if there is a risk that they may break the law.

For example, we don't enable comments on stories about kidnapping, as we wouldn't want to inadvertently publish something that would assist the abductors.

We disable comments on stories concerning court cases that involve a publication ban, and on stories related to sexual assault, in order to protect the identity of the victim.

And often we don't allow comments on stories related to the death of individuals as we don't want to publish anything that may be hurtful for the family.

The decision to disable comments on a story is made after discussion among the news editorial team at CBC.ca.

John Geleynse on LinkedIn: Senior Director, Evangelism - Careers at Apple | 107 comments

from Daring Fireball John Geleynse, Apple’s longtime head of developer evangelism, on LinkedIn: Doing anything for 25 years is a pretty big deal. Being a part of Apple for 25 years has been the privilege and experience of a lifetime. My last day at Apple was exactly a week ago today. I’d always dreamed of being a part of Apple but never imagined it would be a reality. The most productive and exciting years of my career have been with Apple, and I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to meet and work with thousands of creative and passionate developers, designers, and students worldwide. [...] There are no words to describe how grateful I am for the opportunity to work side-by-side with so many great people at Apple. Apple is an immensely special place — far greater than the sum of its parts. Together, we did a lot. I heard about Geleynse’s retirement through the grapevine a month or two ago. I was hoping he’d post something like this publicly, so I could link to it. It’s a lovely departing message. Turns out, in all the years I’ve been writing here, I’ve only mentioned Geleynse by name twice, and both times I was quoting what someone else had written. And those two posts were from 2007 and 2008 — a while ago, to say the least. That’s a shame, dare I say negligent on my part. In third-party developer circles, everyone knows John Geleynse. Most prominently, his role as co-host (with Shaan Pruden) and I think effectively co-chief of the Apple Design Awards. But the ADAs are a once-per-year award show. Year-round, year after year, platform after platform, Geleynse has been shaping, guiding, and defining what it means to be a third-party developer for Apple platforms. The point of winning an ADA isn’t to win an ADA; it’s to reward making a great app that moves the state of the art forward. That’s what Geleynse spent his career trying to do. He’s just incredibly well-liked and well-respected. But, like a typical “bleed six colors” Apple employee, I think Geleynse going all these years operating mostly behind the scenes, with his own name out of the story, taking no personal credit, is just the way he wanted it. He’s going to be missed, dearly — both inside Apple, and out.  ★

Internet Reacts To Trump's Comments About Injecting Disinfectant To Cure COVID-19

The internet is reacting to comments made by Donald Trump during a COVID-19-related press briefing held yesterday. Trump claimed that the virus could be treated by bringing "light inside the body" or injecting a disinfectant. Thankfully medical professionals were quick to denounce these claims, and people on the internet have since been creating some excellent memes on the matter.

This should go without saying, but please don't inject yourself with disinfectant, y'all.
