This is the first of a three-part series on team building. The ideas are simple, but the why behind the what is the secret sauce to growing a solid team. Like most people reading this, I’ve made mistakes. And those disasters have forged the conviction that we can’t be in ministry without being radically committed to loving Jesus and his church more, and on a daily basis.

Keep Jesus close, make sure that your family always takes the right priority (more on that in the future) and be willing to make your church better.  Notice I said better, not different. 

Better, Not Different

One of the biggest complaints I hear from worship pastors/leaders is that somehow, they have found themselves in a church that they really don’t like. 

They don’t feel appreciated by their lead pastors. 

They don’t like the weekend worship experience. 

They don’t like the people. 

At the end of the day, there is so much complaining that I am left scratching my head wondering if they even love Jesus.  If this is you, take some time to pray if you can make your lead pastors vision for your church come alive. If you aren’t in agreement, you may be in the wrong place.  Do yourself, your family and your people a favor and get connected with someone or something that is complimenting to your convictions and your philosophy.  God created you to be you, but we are servants before leading anything. Some of us carry the responsibility to make things different.  Most of us don’t.  Know your place.  Is it your burden to change things? …or is it your job to make things better.  Talk to your teams about this.  This is a fantastic “clarity” question that will free up your bandwidth.

OK, that is my soap box! ☺  As I give you these three helpful tips, it’s important for you to know that these are just tools.  You can’t fake or replace strong spiritual foundations of ministry leadership.  Love Jesus and use tools and resources to LOVE His PEOPLE better.  We try to change people or churches.  But what I’ve found is that when you develop people, things change. 

But what I’ve found is that when you develop people, things change. 

So, if it’s our job to make things better, what are some ideas that we can do to commit to improving? 

1. Develop a leadership pipeline

Developing a leadership pipeline is a helpful tool to bring clarity to “who’s responsible for who and who’s responsible for what”.  It’s really difficult for a worship pastor to carry the burden of a ministry on their shoulders alone…and they shouldn’t. I don’t have to tell you that the apostle Paul makes it clear that we are called to empower people to do the work of the Kingdom, not do it all on our own! (Ephesians 4:11-13) We also get a peek into Moses' anxiety in Numbers chapter 11, where he's at his wit’s end and well over his capacity. The Lord tells him to gather 70 of his most trusted and responsible people. Moses brings them to the "tent of meetings" and the Spirit of the Lord pours over them.

God helped Moses build his team. He will help you build yours.

A leadership pipeline helps you identify your 70 (or even 7 figuratively speaking). This is the pipeline our church utilizes.  

How this works:

In this chart, we document how responsibility falls within a team.

• An assistant is the first place in which we invite someone to be developed as a leader.
• A leader is the first level in which a person is responsible for a team.
• A coach is the first level in which a leader is overseeing other leaders.
• A director is responsible for directing a particular team.
• A pastor is responsible for care, culture and vision.

My favorite area to develop is our coaches. In worship ministry, I am so lucky to have some of the best coaches.

Here's how this role works:

Jordan Hicks is my guitar coach. He is responsible for developing all guitar leaders, recruitment and assimilating guitarists for all of our campuses, adult, youth and kids’ teams. He's responsible for all communication and administration for this group as well. Because Jordan is the leader I've poured into, he completely understands my values, our church’s values and culture, and our end goal. He's a volunteer, but he brings a priceless value of leadership and excellence to our church. Our worship leaders never should worry about who they are leading with. We are spoiled because of warriors like Jordan. He's just one example of Ephesians 4 coming to life in our ministry.

I grew up as a jazz musician—tenor sax. I loved John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk. C’mon somebody!  I was in high school when I first played in combos with some older pro musicians in our city. We started playing a blues tune when one of the guys stopped me and said, “In the words of Miles Davis, man…you can’t play blues because you haven’t hurt enough yet.”  Apparently, I lacked any sense of emotive playing ability as a teenager. And I hadn’t hurt enough yet. 

If playing jazz and blues is an expression of pain and hurt that we’ve experienced, then singing worship music is an expression of the HOPE we know. We can’t and shouldn’t do this alone. Lean on your team. Empower them.

Over the last few months we’ve tackled the topic of TEAM BUILDING.  As much as I would love to feel as if we have this one nailed, we don’t.  TEAM BUILDING is a muscle that every leader needs to continue to develop.  It’s easy to let this one slip away from us! Just when we start to feel like we are getting on top of this, something changes.  A vital team member leaves.  A leader needs to take on the responsibility of a different area.  Your best guitar player gets hired as the worship pastor at another church.  These are all real-life situations that happen in even the best teams.  They will happen to yours as well.

In our “Month One” blog on team building we presented the IDEA of developing a Leadership Pipeline within your worship ministry.  This IDEA helped support that idea that building an EMPOWERED TEAM is a powerful Kingdom tool.  “Who’s responsible for who?” and “Who’s responsible for what?” are two of the most important questions that needs to be answered in any team environment.  When you lead a team with clarity and spread out the responsibility for others to own your team, you ignite growth opportunities that might have went unnoticed. 

In “Month Two” we presented the idea of “Making Recruitment and Assimilation a Normal for Everyone”.  So many times, I bump into Worship Leaders and Pastors that feel the very unfair burden of building ALONE.  With this IDEA, we present the notion that every team can build better and faster when the team members who are on the teams are your best recruiters.  Make this a normal practice.  At my church, we practice asking new team members to “bring one” with you.  We have found that by making this a standard practice at ground level, we never have to ask for participation from the 10,000-foot level.  Whatever is visible is what replicates.  Empower your best leaders to build.

So here we are. Month Three.

Idea #3. Clearly Identify and Communicate Simple On-Ramps.

I love my city.  I live in Lincoln, Ne.  Home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  I love the youthful spirit and progressive nature of our city.  I have even grown to love and cherish the special college football atmosphere that engulfs our city on game day.  It’s addictive to say the least.  But one thing that I am not a big fan of is traffic on game day.  There is one primary road that leads into Lincoln and over 90,000 fans make the trek to our city on game day.  There are probable more if you include tailgaters.  THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM: The roads infrastructure needs to be able to support the traffic flow to the desired destination.  If there are too many confusing pieces of communication, it would put our city into emergency mode and have catastrophic effects.  I mean, the world might come to an end if people missed a Cornhusker Football Game! (No, but seriously) ;)

Every month I host a worship leaders round table in Omaha Ne.  At this round table, Worship leaders from multiple different denominations gather for friendship and peer coaching.  These leaders have become family and they are amazing.  We discuss a wide range of worship ministry issues.  One topic that comes up regularly is “attracting the right volunteers”.  If a leader starts to pour their heart out to me about how they can’t get enough volunteers, I always ask one question to start the conversation.  “Can you tell me about your on-ramp?” This might sound overly simplistic, but what I have found is that sometimes we make it more complicated than it needs to be or we haven’t identified the answer to the most important question at all.  Every leader on your team, in unity, needs to be able to answer this question with clarity and simplicity.

 THIS IS THE QUESTION

“Where do I go and What do I do?”

 Having clear and simple communication about “what to DO next” can make or break your teams culture. 

 Here are a few suggestions when it comes to identifying your onramp into your ministry:

       1.     KEEP IT SIMPLE-

Keep it simple in language and communication.  Your “on-ramp” shouldn’t be riddled with complex forms, interviews and assessments.  Not yet anyways.  Create an “on-ramp’ that just answers the question, “where do I go and what do I do?”.  Worry about next steps later.  But for now, getting a “willing one” to show up is your biggest win. Make it simple for them.

For example, I person asks about playing guitar on the worship team.  Any leader in your department should be able to have the same simple answer. ”I am so glad you are interested!  We host all our new volunteers on Monday Nights at 6:30pm!  Would you be my guest?!”

       2.     USE WHATS ALREADY WORKING AS YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD-

­What is already working in your church?  Do you have a rehearsal process that is spot on?  USE IT!  Is God’s presence so thick in your weekend worship services that lives are being transformed?  USE IT! I’ve made the mistake of overthinking and over programming.  I’ve launched the “extra” visitor’s night or the quarterly worship night with the intentions of attracting new people.  Sometimes those things work.  But the problem is that even though they may be effective, it takes a long time for those events to represent the culture and team that we want people to be attracted to. 

Identify what’s already working and utilize those moments to “on-ramp” your team.

        3.     KEEP IT CONSISTENT-

Nothing can steal the wind out of the sails of progress like a good dose of inconsistency.  If you “welcome” new team members on Monday nights, keep that consistent for a season.  If you “welcome” new people to your choir rehearsal and you celebrate leaders that brought them, don’t change that unless you are communicating change.  Consistency, on this point, allows us the opportunity to get buy in from our team! Consistency builds reliability. Consistency gives our leaders tools to build with.  (Side note:  We will be talking about “embracing change” and reinvention in the upcoming months.)

Consistency tells our teams that we aren’t building a kingdom that only serves us, but we are leading an army that can fight battles when we share the burden.

Identifying your “on-ramps” could be a simple strategy that could help you engage people better.  Below is a sample of an “on-ramps” document that I created for our kid’s ministry at our church.  This idea isn’t just for worship/creative teams, but for everyone.

It is essential that you clearly communicate the “WHERE/HOW” to START whenever you are building teams.  Keep your communication clear and simple.  Try utilizing opportunities that your church is already doing well to interact with potential volunteers.  Lastly, be consistent.  Everyone should know the answer to this question: “Where do I go and What do I do?”.

Jesus, I pray today for the burden and stress that our worship leaders and pastors feel daily. We pray that you would continue to grow our capacity to shepherd well.  Thank you for entrusting us with big things.  We are honored to pastor your people.

Yaoundé, Cameroon — The government of Chad said Tuesday that hundreds of Boko Haram fighters are fleeing the central African state’s territory and crossing over into Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. State TV reports the fighters fled after clashes with Chadian forces over the weekend that killed more than 100 Boko Haram fighters as well as close to 20 Chadian soldiers. Chad state TV reports that assaults have continued against Boko Haram strongholds after the central African state’s military saw almost 20 soldiers killed and 32 others injured in a Saturday battle with Boko Haram terrorists in the Lake Chad basin. A government statement said about 100 Boko Haram fighters were killed and a dozen others injured during the clashes, and that Boko Haram fighters are now fleeing to Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger. Earlier this month, Chad's military launched an operation aimed at dislodging Boko Haram terrorists from areas around Lake Chad, according to the central African state’s president, General Mahamat Idriss Deby. Deby said the operation – named Haskanite -- is to avenge the killing of 40 government troops in October and to improve security for civilians in the area. The offensive hit a complication last week, when Deby said the fighting forces of Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger, who all contribute troops to a regional anti-terrorism joint task force, had decided to not collaborate with the Chadian offensive. Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger have made no public statements confirming or denying Deby’s claim, and VOA could not independently verify if the three countries have chosen not to participate in the Chadian operation. Cameroon’s military said it is securing the country’s borders and protecting its civilians. Deby has said he planned to withdraw his troops from the multi-national force, which has about 11,000 troops, because of the absence of what he calls coordinated efforts among member states to fight Boko Haram terrorism. Remadji Hoinathy is a lecturer at the University of N'Djamena in Chad and a researcher on strategic development in central Africa and the Lake Chad Basin Commission. He said it is imperative for neighboring states to strategize and join Chad in fighting Boko Haram because the terrorist group has a high capacity to infiltrate communities in Cameroon, Nigeria and Niger when attacked by forces from Chad. Remadji says fighters that survive onslaughts from Chad government forces will escape to safety areas in Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria and return to Chad to commit more atrocities when Operation Haskanite ends. Chad has not said when it might withdraw its troops from the U.N.-assisted joint fighting force. Chad civil society groups and political parties say they are surprised that officials of the joint task force have neither reacted to Chad's threat to withdraw nor announced plans to cooperate with the offensive against Boko Haram. Hisseine Abdoulaye is spokesperson of The Patriots, one of Chad’s political parties. He spoke to VOA via a messaging app from Chad's capital N'djamena. Abdoulaye said although it is the right of any state or party to pull out of an organization if its interests are not protected and respected, he disagrees with Chad's announced plan to withdraw its troops from the Multinational Joint Task Force of the Lake Chad Basin Commission. He saif Chad's military alone cannot stop militants from attacking government troops and communities. Boko Haram launched an armed rebellion against the Nigerian government in 2009 to establish an Islamic state. Fighting has since spread to neighboring countries and has killed more than 40,000 people, displacing over 3 million according to the United Nations.

Of all the modern array methods, the one I had the hardest time wrapping my head around was Array.reduce().

On the surface, it seems like a simple, boring method that doesn’t do much. But below its humble exterior, Array.reduce() is actually a powerful, flexible addition to your developer toolkit.

Today, we’re going to look at some cool things you can do with Array.reduce().

How Array.reduce() works

Most of the modern array methods return a new array. The Array.reduce() method is a bit more flexible. It can return anything. Its purpose is to take an array and condense its content into a single value.

That value can be a number, a string, or even an object or new array. That’s the part that’s always tripped me up – I didn’t realize just how flexible it is!

The syntax

The Array.reduce() accepts two arguments: a callback method to run against each item in the array, and a starting value.

The callback also accepts two arguments: the accumulator, which is the current combined value, and the current item in the loop. Whatever you return is used as the accumulator for the next item in the loop. On the very first loop, that starting value is used instead.

var myNewArray = [].reduce(function (accumulator, current) {
  return accumulator;
}, starting);

Let’s look at some examples to make this all tangible.

1. Adding numbers together

Let’s say you had an array of numbers that you wanted to add together. Using Array.forEach(), you might do something like this:

var total = 0;

[1, 2, 3].forEach(function (num) {
  total += num;
});

This is the cliche example for using Array.reduce(). I find the word accumulator confusing, so in this example, I’m calling it sum, because that’s what it is.

var total = [1, 2, 3].reduce(function (sum, current) {
  return sum + current;
}, 0);

Here, we pass in 0 as our starting value.

In the callback, we add the current value to the sum, which has our starting value of 0 on the first loop, then 1 (the starting value of 0 plus the item value of 1), then 3 (the sum value of 1 plus the item value of 2), and so on.

2. Combining multiple array methods into Array.map() and Array.filter() into a single step

Imagine you had an array of wizards at Hogwarts.

var wizards = [
  {
    name: 'Harry Potter',
    house: 'Gryfindor'
  },
  {
    name: 'Cedric Diggory',
    house: 'Hufflepuff'
  },
  {
    name: 'Tonks',
    house: 'Hufflepuff'
  },
  {
    name: 'Ronald Weasley',
    house: 'Gryfindor'
  },
  {
    name: 'Hermione Granger',
    house: 'Gryfindor'
  }
];

You want to create a new array that contains just the names of wizards who are in Hufflepuff. One way you could do that is by using the Array.filter() method to get back just wizards whose house property is Hufflepuff. Then, you’d use the Array.map() method to create a new array containing just the name property for the remaining wizards.

// Get the names of the wizards in Hufflepuff
var hufflepuff = wizards.filter(function (wizard) {
  return wizard.house === 'Hufflepuff';
}).map(function (wizard) {
  return wizard.name;
});

With the Array.reduce() method, we can get the same array in a single pass, improving our performance. You pass in an empty array ([]) as the starting value. On each pass, you check to see if the wizard.house is Hufflepuff. If it is, you push it to the newArr (our accumulator in this example). If not, you do nothing.

Either way, you return the newArr to become the accumulator on the next pass.

// Get the names of the wizards in Hufflepuff
var hufflepuff = wizards.reduce(function (newArr, wizard) {
  if (wizard.house === 'Hufflepuff') {
    newArr.push(wizard.name);
  }
  return newArr;
}, []);

3. Creating markup from an array

What if, instead of creating an array of names, we wanted to create an unordered list of wizards in Hufflepuff? Instead of passing an empty array into Array.reduce() as our starting value, we’ll pass in an empty string ('') and call it html.

If the wizard.house equals Hufflepuff, we’ll concatenate our html string with the wizard.name wrapped in an opening and closing list item (li). Then, we’ll return the html to become the accumulator on the next loop.

// Create a list of wizards in Hufflepuff
var hufflepuffList = wizards.reduce(function (html, wizard) {
  if (wizard.house === 'Hufflepuff') {
    html += '<li>' + wizard.name + '</li>';
  }
  return html;
}, '');

Add an opening and closing unordered list element before and after Array.reduce(), and you’re ready to inject your markup string into the DOM.

// Create a list of wizards in Hufflepuff
var hufflepuffList = '<ul>' + wizards.reduce(function (html, wizard) {
  if (wizard.house === 'Hufflepuff') {
    html += '<li>' + wizard.name + '</li>';
  }
  return html;
}, '') + '</ul>';

4. Grouping similar items in an array together

The lodash library has a groupBy() method takes a collection of items as an array and groups them together into an object based on some criteria.

Let’s say you want an array of numbers.

If you wanted to group all of the items in numbers together based on their integer value, you would do this with lodash.

var numbers = [6.1, 4.2, 6.3];

// returns {'4': [4.2], '6': [6.1, 6.3]}
_.groupBy(numbers, Math.floor);

If you had an array of words, and you wanted to group the items in words by their length, you would do this.

var words = ['one', 'two', 'three'];

// returns {'3': ['one', 'two'], '5': ['three']}
_.groupBy(words, 'length');

Creating a groupBy() function with Array.reduce()

You can recreate that same functionality using the Array.reduce() method.

We’ll create a helper function, groupBy(), that accepts the array and criteria to sort by as arguments. Inside groupBy(), we’ll run Array.reduce() on our array, passing in an empty object ({}) as our starting point, and return the result.

var groupBy = function (arr, criteria) {
  return arr.reduce(function (obj, item) {
    // Some code will go here...
  }, {});
};

Inside the Array.reduce() callback function, we’ll check to see if the criteria is a function, or a property of the item. Then we’ll get its value from the current item.

If there’s no property in the obj with that value yet, we’ll create it and assign an empty array as its value. Finally, we’ll push the item to that key, and return the object as the accumulator for the next loop.

var groupBy = function (arr, criteria) {
  return arr.reduce(function (obj, item) {

    // Check if the criteria is a function to run on the item or a property of it
    var key = typeof criteria === 'function' ? criteria(item) : item[criteria];

    // If the key doesn't exist yet, create it
    if (!obj.hasOwnProperty(key)) {
      obj[key] = [];
    }

    // Push the value to the object
    obj[key].push(item);

    // Return the object to the next item in the loop
    return obj;

  }, {});
};

5. Combining data from two sources into an array

Remember our array of wizards?

What if you had another data set, an object of house points each wizard has earned.

Imagine you wanted to combine both sets of data into a single array, with the number of points added to each wizard’s data in the wizards array. How would you do it?

The Array.reduce() method is perfect for this!

var wizardsWithPoints = wizards.reduce(function (arr, wizard) {

  // Get the key for the points object by removing spaces from the wizard's name
  var key = wizard.name.replace(' ', '');

  // If the wizard has points, add them
  // Otherwise, set them to 0
  if (points[key]) {
    wizard.points = points[key];
  } else {
    wizard.points = 0;
  }

  // Push the wizard object to the new array
  arr.push(wizard);

  // Return the array
  return arr;

}, []);

6. Combining data from two sources into an object

What if you instead wanted to combine the two data sources into an object, where each wizard’s name was the key, and their house and points were properties? Again, the Array.reduce() method is perfect for this.

var wizardsAsAnObject = wizards.reduce(function (obj, wizard) {

  // Get the key for the points object by removing spaces from the wizard's name
  var key = wizard.name.replace(' ', '');

  // If the wizard has points, add them
  // Otherwise, set them to 0
  if (points[key]) {
    wizard.points = points[key];
  } else {
    wizard.points = 0;
  }

  // Remove the name property
  delete wizard.name;

  // Add wizard data to the new object
  obj[key] = wizard;

  // Return the array
  return obj;

}, {});

Here’s a demo combining two data sets into an object.

Should you use Array.reduce() more?

The Array.reduce() method has gone from being something I thought was pointless to my favorite JavaScript method. So, should you use it? And when?

The Array.reduce() method has fantastic browser support. It works in all modern browsers, and IE9 and above. It’s been supported in mobile browsers for a long time, too. If you need to go back even further than that, you can add a polyfill to push support back to IE6.

The biggest complaint you can make about Array.reduce() is that it’s confusing for people who have never encountered it before. Combining Array.filter() with Array.map() is slower to run and involves extra steps, but it’s easier to read. It’s obvious from the names of the methods what they’re supposed to be doing.

That said, there are times where Array.reduce() makes things that would be complicated more simple rather than more complicated. The groupBy() helper function is a good example.

Ultimately, this is another tool to add to your toolkit. A tool that, if used right, can give you super powers.

A punching unit is arranged so that a plurality of punches is grouped into a first group having a predetermined number of punches and a second group containing any one of the punches in the first group and having a smaller number of punches. A punching state of the predetermined number of punches is produced by reciprocating a reciprocating member within a first range and by vertically moving the punches of the first group through the intermediary of cams and followers corresponding to the first group and another punching state of the smaller number of punches is reached by reciprocating the reciprocating member within a second movable range and vertically moving the punches of the second group through the intermediary of cams and followers corresponding to the second group. This arrangement allows the number of punches and dies to be reduced as compared to the prior art.

A cutting element for an earth-boring tool. The cutting element comprises a substrate base, and a volume of polycrystalline diamond material on an end of the substrate base. The volume of polycrystalline diamond material comprises a generally conical surface, an apex centered about a longitudinal axis extending through a center of the substrate base, a flat cutting surface extending from a first point at least substantially proximate the apex to a second point on the cutting element more proximate a lateral side surface of the substrate base. Another cutting element is disclosed, as are a method of manufacturing and a method of using such cutting elements.

A damping tool holder, such as a boring head, a chuck, or a milling cutting arbor, integrates a damping device (2), in the form of an elongated body. The damping device (2) is housed in a mounting body (3), connected by one end to the tool-holder body (1) and having at its other end an end fitting (4) for mounting a tool, whereby the mounting body (3) is equipped with at least one lubricant feed pipe (32), emptying at its front end into the end fitting (4) for mounting a tool and connected at its other end to a circular groove (102) for distributing lubricant that is provided on the front surface of the tool holder (1).

A method of forming an earth-boring tool includes introducing metal into a die, rotating the die to generate centrifugal forces on the metal, and cooling the metal in the rotating die. A rotary drill bit may include a unitary, centrifugally cast bit body including an integral shank, at least one blade, and at least one cutting element on the blade. A rotary drill bit or a roller cone may include a first centrifugally cast material and a second centrifugally cast material. Another rotary drill bit includes a bit body comprising a maraging steel alloy. A method of forming a rotary drill bit may include disposing cutting elements on a rotary drill bit comprising maraging steel and aging the rotary drill bit to form at least one intermetallic precipitate phase. Methods of repairing a rotary drill bit include annealing and aging at least a portion of a rotary drill bit.

Partially formed earth-boring rotary drill bits comprise a first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component having at least one recess, and at least a second less than fully sintered particle-matrix component disposed at least partially within the at least one recess. Each less than fully sintered particle-matrix component comprises a green or brown structure including compacted hard particles, particles comprising a metal alloy matrix material, and an organic binder material. The at least a second less than fully sintered particle-matrix component is configured to shrink at a slower rate than the first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component due to removal of organic binder material from the less than fully sintered particle-matrix components in a sintering process to be used to sinterbond the first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component to the first less than fully sintered particle-matrix component. Earth-boring rotary drill bits comprise such components sinterbonded together.

Earth-boring tools include a body, one or more blades projecting outwardly from the body, and cutting elements carried by the blade. The cutting elements include at least one shearing cutting element and at least one gouging cutting element. Methods of forming an earth-boring tool include mounting a shearing cutting element comprising an at least substantially planar cutting face to a body of an earth-boring tool, and mounting a gouging cutting element comprising a non-planar cutting face to the body of the earth-boring tool. The gouging cutting element may be positioned on the body of the earth-boring tool such that the gouging cutting element will gouge formation material within a kerf cut in the formation material by the shearing cutting element, or between kerfs cut in the formation material by a plurality of shearing cutting elements.

Earth-boring drill bits include a bit body, an element having an attachment feature bonded to the bit body, and a shank assembly. Methods for assembling an earth-boring rotary drill bit include bonding a threaded element to the bit body of a drill bit and engaging the shank assembly to the threaded element. A nozzle assembly for an earth-boring rotary drill bit may include a cylindrical sleeve having a threaded surface and a threaded nozzle disposed at least partially in the cylindrical sleeve and engaged therewith. Methods of forming an earth-boring drill bit include providing a nozzle assembly including a tubular sleeve and nozzle at least partially within a nozzle port of a bit body.

A socket for driving a threaded fastener into a material has teeth spaced around a fastener opening. The teeth cut out a counterbore hole that receives the head of the fastener as the fastener threads into the material.
