judgment and order dated 12 January 2023 passed by the Appellate Bench of the Small Causes Court dismissing (A-1) Appeal Nos.396/2015 and 95/2016 and confirming the eviction decree dated 25 June 2015 passed by the Small Causes Court in R.A.E. Suit No. 147A/306 of 1996. By decreeing the suit, the Small Causes Court has directed the Revision Applicants (Defendant Nos.1 to 8) to hand over possession of the suit premises to the Plaintiff.

B. FACTS 2) Plaintiff claims to be the owner of Godown No. 63 in

Sitaram Mill, Delisle Road, Mumbai-400 001 are the suit premises. By Agreement dated 2 July 1975 entered into between the Plaintiff- Saidpur Jute Co. Ltd and Defendant No.1-MBK Enterprises, Plaintiff granted lease in respect of portion of the Godown No. 63 admeasuring 8800 sq. ft (suit premises) in favour of Defendant No.1 for a period of 60 years at monthly rent of Rs.4,488/-. Plaintiff found Defendant No.2-Mid-Day Publications Pvt. Ltd. in occupation of the suit premises and accordingly filed R.A.E. Suit No. 147A/306 of 1996 on 9 February 1996 seeking recovery of possession of the suit premises on the grounds of (i) unlawful subletting by Defendant No.1 to Defendant No.2 (ii) commission of acts contrary to the provisions of Section 108 of the Transfer of Property Act and (iii) carrying out structural additions and alterations of permanent nature in the suit premises and erecting structures of permanent nature without 12 November 2024 Neeta Sawant CRA-120-2023-CRA-215-2023-FC obtaining written permission from Plaintiffs. Defendant No.1 appeared in the suit and filed Written Statement contending that under the covenants of lease, it was entitled to grant sublease in respect of the suit premises and that accordingly Defendant No.1 have subleased the premises to M/s. Mangla International Pvt. Ltd and Ors. who are associate companies having Directors from the same family and the said companies in turn had given the premises on license to Defendant No.2-Mid-Day. Defendant No.1 denied the allegations regarding to commission of act contrary to the provisions of section 108(o) of the Transfer of Property Act, as well as, erecting of structure of permanent nature without the consent of the landlord. Defendant No.2-Mid-Day also filed its Written Statement admitting its use and occupation of the suit premises from July 1995 but pleaded that such occupation was under agreement with Defendant No.1. Mid-Day also denied the allegations in the plaint.

Crystal structures of three uranyl–acetate–bipyridine complexes crystallized from hydraulic fracking fluid

Hydraulic fracking exposes shale plays to acidic hydraulic fracking fluid (HFF), releasing toxic uranium (U) along with the desired oil and gas. With no existing methods to ensure U remains sequestered in the shale, this study sought to add organic ligands to HFF to explore potential U retention in shale plays. To test this possibility, incubations were set up in which uranyl acetate and one organic bipyridine ligand (either 2,2'-, 2,3'-, 2,4'-, or 4,4'-bipyridine) were added to pristine HFF as the crystallization medium. After several months and complete evaporation of all volatiles, bulk yellow crystalline material was obtained from the incubations, three of which yielded crystals suitable for single-crystal analysis, resulting in two novel structures and a high-quality structure of a previously described compound. The UO2VI acetate complexes bis(acetato-κ2O,O')(2,2'-bipyridine-κ2N,N')dioxidouranium(VI), [U(C2H3O2)2O2(C10H8N2)2] or [2,2'-bipyridine]UVIO2(CH3CO2)2, (I), and bis(acetato-κ2O,O')(2,4'-bipyridine-κN1')dioxidouranium(VI), [U(C2H3O2)2O2(C10H8N2)2] or [2,4'-bipyridine]2UVIO2(CH3CO2)2, (III), contain eight-coordinate UVI in a pseudo-hexagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry and are molecular, packing via weak C—H...O/N interactions, whereas catena-poly[bis(2,3'-bipyridinium) [di-μ-acetato-μ3-hydroxido-μ-hydroxido-di-μ3-oxido-hexaoxidotriuranium(VI)]–2,3'-bipyridine–water (1/1/1)], (C10H9N2)2[U3(C2H3O2)2O8(OH)2]·C10H8N2·H2O or {[2,3'-bipyridinium]2[2,3'-bipyridine][(UVIO2)3(O)2(OH)2(CH3CO2)2·H2O]}n, (II), forms an ionic one-dimensional polymer with seven-coordinate pentagonal bipyramidal UVI centers and hydrogen-bonding interactions within each chain. The formation of these crystals could indicate the potential for bipyridine to bind with U in shale during fracking, which will be explored in a future study via ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) analyses of U concentration in HFF/bipyridine/shale incubations. The variation seen here between the molecular structures may indicate variance in the ability of bipyridine isomers to form complexes with U, which could impact their ability to retain U within shale in the context of fracking.

In the title complex salt, [Pd(C10H8N2)(C12H12N2O2)](CF3SO3)2, the palladium(II) atom is fourfold coordinated by two chelating ligands, 2,2'-bi­pyridine and 4,4'-dimeth­oxy-2,2'-bi­pyridine, in a distorted square-planar environment. In the crystal, weak π–π stacking inter­actions between the 2,2'-bi­pyridine rings [centroid-to-centroid distances = 3.8984 (19) Å] and between the 4,4'-dimeth­oxy-2,2'-bi­pyridine rings [centroid-to-centroid distances = 3.747 (18) Å] contribute to the alignment of the complex cations in columns parallel to the b-axis direction.

(2E,2'E)-1,1'-([1,1'-Biphen­yl]-4,4'-di­yl)bis­[3-(di­meth­yl­amino)­prop-2-en-1-one]

The title compound, C22H24N2O2, crystallizes in space group P21/n. The mol­ecular structure is almost planar except for a tilt of the phenyl rings. The allyl groups on both ends exhibit the trans-form and the connected N atoms show sp2 character. The mol­ecules are stacked and assembled along the c-axis direction by C—H⋯π inter­actions.

Bis{(S)-(−)-N-[(2-biphen­yl)methyl­idene]-1-(4-meth­oxy­phen­yl)ethyl­amine-κN}di­chlorido­palladium(II)

The PdII complex bis­{(S)-(−)-N-[(biphenyl-2-yl)methyl­idene]1-(4-meth­oxy­phen­yl)ethanamine-κN}di­chlorido­palladium(II), [PdCl2(C22H21NO)2], crystallizes in the monoclinic Sohncke space group P21 with a single mol­ecule in the asymmetric unit. The coordination environment around the palladium is slightly distorted square planar. The N—Pd—Cl bond angles are 91.85 (19), 88.10 (17), 89.96 (18), and 90.0 (2)°, while the Pd—Cl and Pd—N bond lengths are 2.310 (2) and 2.315 (2) Å and 2.015 (2) and 2.022 (6) Å, respectively. The crystal structure features inter­molecular N—H⋯Cl and intramolecular C—H⋯Pd inter­actions, which lead to the formation of a supramolecular framework structure.

Crystal structure of dilithium biphenyl-4,4'-di­sulfonate dihydrate

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, μ-biphenyl-4,4'-di­sulfonato-bis­(aqua­lithium), [Li2(C12H8O6S2)(H2O)2] or Li2[Bph(SO3)2](H2O)2, consists of an Li ion, half of the diphenyl-4,4'-di­sulfonate [Bph(SO3−)2] ligand, and a water mol­ecule. The Li ion exhibits a four-coordinate tetra­hedral geometry with three oxygen atoms of the Bph(SO3−)2 ligands and a water mol­ecule. The tetra­hedral LiO4 units, which are inter­connected by biphenyl moieties, form a layer structure parallel to (100). These layers are further connected by hydrogen-bonding inter­actions to yield a three-dimensional network.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of dimethyl 4-hy­droxy-5,4'-dimethyl-2'-(toluene-4-sulfonyl­amino)­biphenyl-2,3-di­carboxyl­ate

In the title compound, C25H25NO7S, the mol­ecular conformation is stabilized by intra­molecular O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, which form S(6) and S(8) ring motifs, respectively. The mol­ecules are bent at the S atom with a C—SO2—NH—C torsion angle of −70.86 (11)°. In the crystal, mol­ecules are linked by C—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming mol­ecular layers parallel to the (100) plane. C—H⋯π inter­actions are observed between these layers.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 4,4'-di­meth­oxy­biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetra­carb­oxy­lic acid dihydrate

In the crystal of the title compound, C18H14O10·2H2O, the arene rings of the biphenyl moiety are tilted at an angle of 24.3 (1)°, while the planes passing through the carboxyl groups are rotated at angles of 8.6 (1) and 7.7 (1)° out of the plane of the benzene ring to which they are attached. The crystal structure is essentially stabilized by O—H⋯O bonds. Here, the carboxyl groups of neighbouring host mol­ecules are connected by cyclic R22(8) synthons, leading to the formation of a three-dimensional network. The water mol­ecules in turn form helical supra­molecular strands running in the direction of the crystallographic c-axis (chain-like water clusters). The second H atom of each water mol­ecule provides a link to a meth­oxy O atom of the host mol­ecule. A Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed to qu­antify the contributions of the different inter­molecular inter­actions, indicating that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H⋯O/O⋯H (37.0%), H⋯H (26.3%), H⋯C/C⋯H (18.5%) and C⋯O/O⋯C (9.5%) inter­actions.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of dimethyl 4'-bromo-3-oxo-5-(thio­phen-2-yl)-3,4,5,6-tetra­hydro-[1,1'-biphen­yl]-2,4-di­carboxyl­ate

In the title compound, C20H17BrO5S, mol­ecules are connected by inter­molecular C—H⋯S hydrogen bonds with R22(10) ring motifs, forming ribbons along the b-axis direction. C—H⋯π inter­actions consolidate the ribbon structure while van der Waals forces between the ribbons ensure the cohesion of the crystal structure. According to a Hirshfeld surface analysis, H⋯H (40.5%), O⋯H/H⋯O (27.0%), C⋯H/H⋯C (13.9%) and Br⋯H/H⋯Br (11.7%) inter­actions are the most significant contributors to the crystal packing. The thio­phene ring and its adjacent di­carboxyl­ate group and the three adjacent carbon atoms of the central hexene ring to which they are attached were refined as disordered over two sets of sites having occupancies of 0.8378 (15) and 0.1622 (15). The thio­phene group is disordered by a rotation of 180° around one bond.

Synthesis, crystal structure and properties of the trigonal–bipyramidal complex tris­(2-methyl­pyridine N-oxide-κO)bis­(thio­cyanato-κN)cobalt(II)

Reaction of Co(NCS)2 with 2-methyl­pyridine N-oxide in a 1:3 ratio in n-butanol leads to the formation of crystals of tris­(2-methyl­pyridine N-oxide-κO)bis­(thio­cyanato-κN)cobalt(II), [Co(NCS)2(C6H7NO)3]. The asymmetric unit of the title compound consists of one CoII cation two thio­cyanate anions and three crystallographically independent 2-methyl­pyridine N-oxide coligands in general positions. The CoII cations are trigonal–bipyramidally coordinated by two terminal N-bonding thio­cyanate anions in the trans-positions and three 2-methyl­pyridine N-oxide coligands into discrete complexes. These complexes are linked by inter­molecular C–H⋯S inter­actions into double chains that elongate in the c-axis direction. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) measurements prove that all batches are always contaminated with an additional and unknown crystalline phase. Thermogravimetry and differential analysis of crystals selected by hand reveal that the title compound decomposes at about 229°C in an exothermic reaction. At about 113°C a small endothermic signal is observed that, according to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, is irreversible. PXRD measurements of the residue prove that a poorly crystalline and unknown phase has formed and thermomicroscopy indicates that some phase transition occurs that is accompanied with a color change of the title compound.

Crystal structures of 1,1'-bis­(carb­oxy­meth­yl)-4,4'-bipyridinium derivatives

The crystal structures of 2-[1'-(carb­oxy­meth­yl)-4,4'-bi­pyridine-1,1'-diium-1-yl]acetate tetra­fluoro­borate, C14H13N2O4+·BF4− or (Hbcbpy)(BF4), and neutral 1,1'-bis­(carboxyl­atometh­yl)-4,4'-bi­pyridine-1,1'-diium (bcbpy), C14H20N2O8, are reported. The asymmetric unit of the (Hbcbpy)(BF4) consists of a Hbcbpy+ monocation, a BF4− anion, and one-half of a water mol­ecule. The BF4− anion is disordered. Two pyridinium rings of the Hbcbpy+ monocation are twisted at a torsion angle of 30.3 (2)° with respect to each other. The Hbcbpy monocation contains a carb­oxy­lic acid group and a deprotonated carboxyl­ate group. Both groups exhibit both a long and a short C—O bond. The cations are linked by inter­molecular hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between the carb­oxy­lic acid and the deprotonated carboxyl­ate group to give one-dimensional zigzag chains. The asymmetric unit of the neutral bcbpy consists of one-half of the bcbpy and two water mol­ecules. In contrast to the Hbcbpy+ monocation, the neutral bcbpy mol­ecule contains two pyridinium rings that are coplanar with each other and a carboxyl­ate group with similar C—O bond lengths. The mol­ecules are connected by inter­molecular hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between water mol­ecules and carboxyl­ate groups, forming a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonding network.

Synthesis, spectroscopic analysis and crystal structure of (N-{2-[(2-amino­eth­yl)amino]­eth­yl}-4'-methyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-sulfonamidato)tri­carb­on­ylrhenium(I)

The title compound, [Re(C17H22N3O2S)(CO)3] is a net neutral fac-Re(I)(CO)3 complex of the 4-methyl­biphenyl sulfonamide derivatized di­ethyl­enetri­amine ligand. The NNN-donor monoanionic ligand coordinates with the Re core in tridentate fashion, establishing an inner coordination sphere resulting in a net neutral complex. The complex possesses pseudo-octa­hedral geometry where one face of the octa­hedron is occupied by three carbonyl ligands and the other faces are occupied by one sp2 nitro­gen atom of the sulfonamide group and two sp3 nitro­gen atoms of the dien backbone. The Re—Nsp2 bond distance, 2.173 (4) Å, is shorter than the Re—Nsp3 bond distances, 2.217 (5) and 2.228 (6) Å, and is similar to the range reported for typical Re—Nsp2 bond lengths (2.14 to 2.18 Å).

[SnF(bipy)(H2O)]2[SnF6], a mixed-valent inorganic tin(II)–tin(IV) compound

In the title compound, bis­[aqua­(2,2'-bi­pyridine)­fluorido­tin(II)] hexa­fluorido­tin(IV), [SnF(C10H8N2)(H2O)]2[SnF6], an ionic mixed-valent tin(II)–tin(IV) compound, the bivalent tin atom is the center atom of the cation and the tetra­valent tin atom is the center atom of the anion. With respect to the first coordination sphere, the cation is monomeric, with the tin(II) atom having a fourfold seesaw coordination with a fluorine atom in an equatorial position, a water mol­ecule in an axial position and the two nitro­gen atoms of the chelating 2,2'-bi­pyridine ligand in the remaining axial and equatorial positions. The bond lengths and angles of this hypervalent first coordination sphere are described by 2c–2e and 3c–4e bonds, respectively, all of which are based on the orthogonal 5p orbitals of the tin atom. In the second coordination sphere, which is based on an additional, very long tin–fluorine bond that leads to dimerization of the cation, the tin atom is trapezoidal–pyramidally coordinated. The tetra­valent tin atom of the centrosymmetric anion has an octa­hedral coordination. The differences in its tin–fluorine bond lengths are attributed to hydrogen bonding, as the two of the four fluorine atoms are each involved in two hydrogen bonds, linking anions and cations together to form strands.

In the title compound, C27H19O3N, the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings of the biphenyl unit is 38.14 (2)° and the C—O—C—C torsion angle in the benz­yloxy benzene fragment is 179.1 (2)°. In the crystal, the mol­ecules are linked by weak C—H⋯O inter­actions forming S(9) chains propagating along [010]. The most important contributions to the Hirshfeld surface arise from H⋯H (32.4%) and C⋯H/H⋯C (37.0%) contacts.

Lawmakers Reach A Bipartisan Agreement On Police Reform

Lawmakers in Washington, D.C., have reached a preliminary, bipartisan agreement on police reform after months of closely watched debate on the topic.

Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., announced the agreement on Thursday evening.

"After months of working in good faith, we have reached an agreement on a framework addressing the major issues for bipartisan police reform," the lawmakers said in a joint statement.

"There is still more work to be done on the final bill, and nothing is agreed to until everything is agreed to. Over the next few weeks we look forward to continuing our work toward getting a finalized proposal across the finish line."

The exact details of the plan were not immediately clear.

The issue of reforming qualified immunity, to make it easier to sue police officers over allegations of brutality, had been a sticking point in negotiations. The police use of chokeholds was another debated provision.

The effort to reform U.S. policing comes after several years of increasing pressure to better understand and regulate the way officers interact with the communities they patrol.

The high-profile deaths of several Black people — many unarmed — at the hands of police — who have in some notable instances been white — have been the catalyst for the police reform movement.

The Democratic-led House had approved the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act — named after one of those Black people killed by police — in early March, and President Biden had hoped Congress would pass the reform effort by the first anniversary of Floyd's death in late May.

But Bass had said then that getting "a substantive piece of legislation" is "far more important than a specific date."

Floyd's murderer, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, is set to be sentenced to prison on Friday.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement Thursday that Biden "is grateful to Rep. Bass, Sen. Booker, and Sen. Scott for all of their hard work on police reform, and he looks forward to collaborating with them on the path ahead."

The topic of police reform has divided the nation across party lines, with progressives accusing the right of seeking to maintain an antiquated and all-too-powerful law enforcement apparatus. Conservatives say the left has blamed the actions of some officers on the institution itself, turning the topic of police support and "blue lives" into more ammunition for the ongoing culture war.

Local Radio Freedom Act Garners Additional Bipartisan Support in House, Senate

WASHINGTON, DC -- Fourteen members of the House of Representatives and three Senators have added their support to the Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA) opposing "any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge" on local broadcast radio stations bringing the number of cosponsors to 138 in the House and 18 in the Senate. The National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) expressed their support for the resolution, which signals members of Congress's opposition to any potential legislation that imposes new performance royalties on broadcast radio stations for music airplay, in a letter to congressional leaders on June 11.
