Robert Louis Stevenson (1850)

Born in Scotland, Stevenson traveled frequently during his life, partly in search of better climates for his tuberculosis, which would eventually cause his death at age 44. In 1885, he published A Child's Garden of Verses, one of the most influential children's works of the 19th century. His immensely popular novels Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde were written over the course of just a few years. What is considered his unfinished masterpiece? Discuss

Three-quarters of all human releases of mercury have occurred since 1850

A new study has, for the first time, estimated total anthropogenic releases of mercury over the last 4 000 years, up to 2010. Overall, the study estimates that a total of 1 540 000 tonnes of mercury have been released; three-quarters of this since 1850, and 78 times more than was released through natural causes over this period. Therefore, human activity has been responsible for a significant level of contamination, and this inventory can be used to inform and assess mitigation measures. The publication coincides with the ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and the new EU Mercury Regulation1, which prohibits the export, import and manufacturing of mercury-added products, among other measures.

New Finding Aid: Wanda Landowska and Denise Restout papers, circa 1850s-1969

You are subscribed to Music News for Library of Congress. This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

Wanda Landowska was a Polish keyboardist, composer, and teacher best known for revitalizing harpsichord performance in the twentieth century. Her school at Saint-Leu-la-Foret, founded in 1925, became one of the great centers for the collection, study, and performance of Baroque music until it was looted by the Nazis in 1940. The collection consists of annotated music, correspondence, business papers, writings, programs, photographs, and other materials that document the legacy of Landowska. These materials largely reflect the activities and music library of Landowska and her pupil, Denise Restout, after their migration to the United States in 1941. Only the container list for the music materials is available online at this time.
