A modern approach to browser support

Just recently, some front-end code Clearleft delivered to a client was making its way through acceptance testing. We were slightly surprised to discover that their standards required our code to be supported by the two latest versions of web browsers. And then we realised we didn’t have a browser support policy of our own – something we set about rectifying.

When considering browser versions, we were fairly sure our client didn’t mean, for example, versions 124 and 125 of Chrome (released on 16 April and 14 May 2024 respectively). Instead their support standard would most likely be harking back to the days when Internet Explorer was a thing, and major browsers were updated once a year at best. To put this in context, the final version of Internet Explorer shipped in 2013.

It’s at this point we noted that Clearleft didn’t have a written browser support policy to counter or complement that of our clients. We probably did in the dim and distant past, but in recent years we’ve just built accessible, progressively enhanced websites without feeling the need to codify what that means. For the sake of professionalism and good client relationships, we decided to rectify that.

But where to start? Using browser versions clearly doesn’t make any sense, so what do we turn to instead? As it turned out, Jeremy had already nailed it in a recent blog post. We wanted a browser support policy that would focus on outcomes for the user. Rather than being fixated on specific browsers, we needed to consider capabilities, using the mindset that sees modern coding use feature detection in preference to browser detection. It turns out there’s an initiative for that.

The Baseline initiative is a joint effort by Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Mozilla to categorise browser support for web standards. Baseline provides clear information about which web standards features are ready to use in websites. It designates new features into two categories:

  • Newly available – a feature is supported by the latest versions of all core browsers
  • Widely available – a feature has been supported across browsers for at least 30 months

We use the Baseline project to determine which browser features to use in production. If a feature is widely available according to Baseline, we can use it.

Quoting directly from our browser support policy:

Progressive enhancement

If a feature is newly available, we might still use it, but we’ll ask a follow-up question:

“Can this feature be used as a progressive enhancement?”

In other words, will using this feature harm browsers that don’t support it? If a newly-available feature can be used as a progressive enhancement, we might well use it. If not, we’ll wait until the feature becomes widely available and choose a different method in the meantime.

This approach restricts usage of new features to nice-to-have additions rather than mission-critical requirements. But it also means we don’t necessarily have to wait for every browser to support a feature before using it.

Access for all

Underlying our browser support policy are two foundational principles:

  1. Website content and core functionality should be accessible to everyone.
  2. It’s okay for websites to look different in different browsers.

If content is unreadable in some browsers, that’s a bug that we will fix. If content is displayed slightly differently in some browsers, we consider that to be a facet of the web, not a bug. This means that there will sometimes be subtle visual and functional differences from browser to browser. We deem this acceptable provided that content and core functionality are unaffected.

We think this the right approach to browser support, and it’s something we believe the whole industry should follow in principle. To that end we’ve made our browser support policy available under a Creative Commons license, meaning you can use it for your own purposes if you find it helpful.

The problem with superscripts and subscripts

When marking up a web page featuring text that requires superscripts or subscripts, we should use the semantically meaningful <sup> and <sub> elements. Examples include footnote references(1) and simple maths 1210=C12.

When browsers come across <sup> and <sub> elements, their user agent stylesheet usually applies rules like this:

  font-size: smaller;
  line-height: normal;
}

This makes the text smaller and shifts the baseline up or down. There’s two downsides to this. The first is that the baseline shift usually causes anomalous line spacing, that is to say lines are pushed up or down to make space for the sub- or superscript. Secondly the sub/superscripted characters look slightly off – effectively their font weight has been reduced compared with the surrounding text.

Many OpenType fonts ship with properly designed sub- and superscripts. These are specifically designed for the purpose – the glyphs are already small (no change in font size required), retain a comparable weight and have a different shape compared with regular characters, as befits a thoughtfully shrunk down glyph. Even if these characters are available in the current font, browsers will ignore them and continue to synthesise using CSS properties. There are sensible reasons for this, as we shall see.

It is very easy to get browsers to swap in the OpenType glyphs instead – just use the font-variant-position property. For browsers which support it (all modern ones) you can override the user agent stylesheet and implement font-variant-position as follows:

But there’s a potential problem. What happens if the characters in the text you need to superscript are not all available as OpenType alternates in the current font? According to the CSS Fonts Module Level 4 specification, browsers should synthesise the whole superscript, even if some characters are available as proper superscripts:

Because of the semantic nature of subscripts and superscripts, when the value [of font-variant-position] is either sub or super for a given contiguous run of text, if a variant glyph is not available for all the characters in the run, simulated glyphs should be synthesised for all characters using reduced forms of the glyphs that would be used without this feature applied.

Phew. Job done. You’d have thought. Unfortunately at the time of writing only Firefox supports this behaviour; WebKit and Chromium do not. If the webfont has loaded, the font you are currently reading contains the following superscript alternates: 0123456789(). That is to say no letters or other characters except the numbers 0–9 and a pair of parentheses. Now let’s consider the following markup:

The superscripts vary, in that some of them contain characters which are all available, and others contain a mixture. The text should render like this:

The chances are that none of the ‘a’s or square brackets are superscripted at all. I’ve filed this as a bug in Chromium and Webkit. I’ve also asked that font-variant-position be removed from Baseline until these bugs are fixed, as support is evidently incomplete, but also because that lack of support is harmful to the visual semantics, in other words it could change the intention and meaning of the text.

Finally I’ve proposed that full support for font-variant-position is included in Interop 2025. If you want to see this happen give my proposal some love.

LaSca: a Large Scale Group Decision Support System

To support this process, there are decision support systems that employ different approaches, supporting groups or not. Generally, however, these systems do not have great flexibility; their users have to follow preestablished decision methods. This paper, after exposing some decision-making processes, describes a system, LaSca (from Large Scale), to support decisions in large-scale groups. This system, besides allowing effective achievement of the benefits of deciding in large groups through the proper structuring of the group, also allows its users to define themselves how this structuring will happen, based or not in the existing theories on the subject. So, in addition to facilitate the decision-making process, LaSca also allows its users to decide how to decide.

Study on operational risks and preventive measures of supply chain finance

The operation of supply chain finance faces various risks, therefore, studying the operational risks of supply chain finance and corresponding preventive measures is of great significance. Firstly, classify the types of operational risks in supply chain finance. Secondly, based on the risk classification results, the decision tree method is used to evaluate the operational risks of supply chain finance. Finally, based on the risk assessment results, targeted risk prevention measures for supply chain finance operations are proposed, such as strengthening supplier management, optimising logistics and warehouse management, risk analysis and monitoring, and strengthening information security and data protection. The case analysis results show that the accuracy of the evaluation results of this method is higher, and the risk coefficient has been significantly reduced after applying this method, indicating that it can effectively reduce supply chain risk.

Springs of digital disruption: mediation of blockchain technology adoption in retail supply chain management

Supply chain management practices are vital for success and survival in today's competitive Indian retail market. The advent of COVID-19 pandemic necessitates a digital disruption in retail supply chain management centred on efficient technology like blockchain in order to enhance supply chain performance. The present research aims to decipher the nature of associations between supply chain management practices, blockchain technology adoption and supply chain performance in retail firms. The research is based on primary survey of specific food and grocery retailers operating on a supermarket format stores in two Indian cities. The findings pointed towards the presence of significant and positive association of all the constructs with each other. Moreover, the mediating role of blockchain technology adoption was also revealed, i.e., it partially mediates the effects of supply chain management practices on supply chain performance.

Ebullient supervision, employee engagement and employee commitment in a higher education institution: the partial least square approach

The study investigated the influence of ebullient supervision on employee commitment in a Ghanaian public university through the mediating role of employee engagement. The simple random sampling technique was used to draw 302 administrative staff of the university to respond to the self-administered questionnaire on the constructs. Furthermore, the partial least square structural equation technique was deployed to test the research hypotheses in the study. The results showed that ebullient supervision had a significant positive relationship with employee commitment and employee engagement. The findings further revealed that employee engagement positively correlated with employee commitment. Finally, the study's findings established that employee engagement partially mediated the link between ebullient supervision and employee commitment. The study emphasised that various supervisors in a university's administration should create an environment that favours fun where subordinates can form ties with one another.

Evaluating the Acceptability and Usability of EASEL: A Mobile Application that Supports Guided Reflection for Experiential Learning Activities

Aim/Purpose: To examine the early perceptions (acceptability) and usability of EASEL (Education through Application-Supported Experiential Learning), a mobile platform that delivers reflection prompts and content before, during, and after an experiential learning activity. Background: Experiential learning is an active learning approach in which students learn by doing and by reflecting on the experience. This approach to teaching is often used in disciplines such as humanities, business, and medicine. Reflection before, during, and after an experience allows the student to analyze what they learn and why it is important, which is vital in helping them to understand the relevance of the experience. A just-in-time tool (EASEL) was needed to facilitate this. Methodology: To inform the development of a mobile application that facilitates real-time guided reflection and to determine the relevant feature set, we conducted a needs analysis with both students and faculty members. Data collected during this stage of the evaluation helped guide the creation of a prototype. The user experience of the prototype and interface interactions were evaluated during the usability phase of the evaluation study. Contribution: Both the needs analysis and usability assessment provided justification for continued development of EASEL as well as insight that guides current development. Findings: The interaction design of EASEL is understandable and usable. Both students and teachers value an application that facilitates real-time guided reflection. Recommendations for Practitioners: The use of a system such as EASEL can leverage time and location-based services to support students in field experiences. This technology aligns with evidence that guided reflection provides opportunities for metacognition. Recommendation for Researchers: Iterative prototyping, testing, and refinement can lead to a deliberate and effective app development process. Impact on Society: The EASEL platform leverages inherent functionality of mobile devices, such as GPS and persistent network connectivity, to adapt reflection tasks based on lo-cation or time. Students using EASEL will engage in guided reflection, which leads to metacognition and can help instructors scaffold learning Future Research: We will continue to advance the application through iterative testing and development. When ready, the application will be vetted in larger studies across varied disciplines and contexts.

Delving into the Specificity of Instructional Guidance in Social Media-supported Learning Environments

Aim/Purpose: This study investigates the variations in student participation patterns across different types of instructional activities, learning modes, and with different instructional guidance approaches. In the current study, different variables, modes of learning (guided versus unguided), and types of guidance (social versus cognitive) were manipulated in a series of microblogging-supported collaborative learning tasks to examine to what extent and in which aspects instructional guidance affects the effectiveness and student perception of microblogging-supported learning. Background: Despite the overwhelming agreement on the importance of instructional guidance in microblogging-supported learning environments, very few studies have been done to examine the specificity of guidance, such as how to structure and support microblogging activities, as well as what types of guidance are appropriate in what learning contexts. Methodology: This semester-long study utilized a case-study research design via a multi-dimensional approach in a hybrid classroom with both face-to-face and online environments. Tweets were collected from four types of activities and coded based on content within their contextual setting. Twenty-four college students participated in the study. Contribution: In response to the call to improve social media learning environments under-scored in contemporary education, the current case study took an initial step aiming at deepening the understanding of the role of instructional guidance in microblogging-supported learning environments. Findings: This study showcases that with instructor facilitation, students succeeded in being engaged in a highly participatory and interactive learning experience across a variety of tasks and activities. This study indicates that students’ perspectives of social media tools rely heavily on what instructors do with the tool and how the instructional activities are structured and supported. Instructors’ scaffolding and support is instrumental in keeping students on task and engaging students with meaningful events, thus ensuring the success of microblogging-based learning activities. Meanwhile, students’ perception of usefulness of instructional guidance is closely related to their own pre-perception and experience. Recommendations for Practitioners: When incorporating social media tools, it is important to examine learner’s prior knowledge and comfort level with these tools and tailor the design of instructional activities to their attributes. It is also vital to monitor student progress, adjust the type and amount of guidance and scaffolding provided as they progress, and eventually remove the scaffolding until students can demonstrate that they can perform the task successfully without assistance. Recommendation for Researchers: Due to many other potential factors in place that could potentially influence student learning, no conclusive remarks can be made regarding the superiority of either one type of guidance approach. Future researchers should continue to develop robust research methodologies to seek ways to better operationalize this variable and strive to understand its effect. Future Research: Future replication studies in other settings, with a larger sample size, and different populations will certainly provide further insights on the effects of instructional guidance in microblogging-based learning. Alternative coding methods may also shed light on differences in student interaction in terms of content diversity and depth of learning when analyzing the tweets. Advanced data collection techniques may be explored to ascertain the completeness of data collection.

Assessing supply chain risk management capabilities and its impact on supply chain performance: moderation of AI-embedded technologies

This research investigates the correlation between risk management and supply chain performance (SCP) along with moderation of AI-embedded technologies such as big data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), virtual reality, and blockchain technologies. To calculate the results, this study utilised 644 questionnaires through the structural equation modelling (SEM) method. It is revealed using SmartPls that financial risk management (FRM) is positively linked with SCP. Second, it was observed that AI significantly moderates the connection between FRM and SCP. In addition, the study presents certain insights into supply chain and AI-enabled technologies and how these capabilities can beneficially advance SCP. Besides, certain implications, both managerial and theoretical are described for the supply chain managers along with limitations for future scholars of the world.

Psychological intervention of college students with unsupervised learning neural networks

To better explore the application of unsupervised learning neural networks in psychological interventions for college students, this study investigates the relationships among latent psychological variables from the perspective of neural networks. Firstly, college students' psychological crisis and intervention systems are analysed, identifying several shortcomings in traditional psychological interventions, such as a lack of knowledge dissemination and imperfect management systems. Secondly, employing the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) approach, a structural equation model is constructed for unsupervised learning neural networks. Finally, this study further confirms the effectiveness of unsupervised learning neural networks in psychological interventions for college students. The results indicate that in psychological intervention for college students. Additionally, the weightings of the indicators at the criterion level are calculated to be 0.35, 0.27, 0.19, 0.11 and 0.1. Based on the results of HCI, an emergency response system for college students' psychological crises is established, and several intervention measures are proposed.

Unsupervised VAD method based on short-time energy and spectral centroid in Arabic speech case

Voice Activity Detection (VAD) distinguishes speech segments from noise or silence areas. An efficient and noise-robust VAD system can be widely used for emerging speech technologies such as wireless communication and speech recognition. In this paper, we propose two versions of an unsupervised Arabic VAD method based on the combination of the Short-Time Energy (STE) and the Spectral Centroid (SC) features for formulating a typical threshold to detect speech areas. The first version compares only the STE feature to the threshold (STE-VAD). In contrast, the second compares the SC vector and the threshold (SC-VAD). The two versions of our VAD method were tested on 770 sentences of the Arabphone corpus, which were recorded in clean and noisy environments and evaluated under different values of Signal-to-Noise-Ratio. The experiments demonstrated the robustness of the STE-VAD in terms of accuracy and Mean Square Error.

Evaluation method of cross-border e-commerce supply chain innovation mode based on blockchain technology

In view of the low evaluation accuracy of the effectiveness of cross-border e-commerce supply chain innovation model and the low correlation coefficient of innovation model influencing factors, the evaluation method of cross-border e-commerce supply chain innovation model based on blockchain technology is studied. First, analyse the operation mode of cross-border e-commerce supply chain, and determine the key factors affecting the innovation mode; Then, the comprehensive integration weighting method is used to analyse the factors affecting innovation and calculate the weight value; Finally, the blockchain technology is introduced to build an evaluation model for the supply chain innovation model and realise the evaluation of the cross-border e-commerce supply chain innovation model. The experimental results show that the evaluation accuracy of the proposed method is high, and the highest correlation coefficient of the influencing factors of innovation mode is about 0.99, which is feasible.
