WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan.18, 2011) — A collaborative research project between the East-West Center (EWC) and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) has resulted in a special issue of Contemporary Southeast Asia , ISEAS’ internationally refereed journal on the politics, international relations, and security-related issues of Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic environment. The collection of articles by American and Southeast Asian specialists featured in the journal’s recently released December 2010 issue focus on the topic of America Re-engages Southeast Asia .

Travel and dialogue program is designed to deepen

HONOLULU (Sept. 22, 2010) - Seven Chinese and seven American journalists are meeting at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawai‘i this week for a mutual dialogue culminating a new journalism exchange program in which each group visited the other’s country and are now comparing impressions.

The Chinese journalists traveled to Washington, D.C., New York City and Los Angeles, while the U.S. journalists visited Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong. Both groups met with government officials, community and business leaders, educators, local journalists, and others to gain insights on diverse issues and perspectives that shape the relationship between the two countries.

Leading Chinese Journalist Hu Shuli to Make First Public Comments since Leaving Caijing

HONOLULU (Dec. 18) – The application deadline for the East-West Center's 2010-11 Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) – considered the premier leadership education program in the Asia Pacific region – is Jan. 31, 2010.

Entering its tenth year, the APLP is a graduate certificate program combining the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership capacity. Based at the Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, the program has created a network of dynamic leaders in 48 countries. All participants receive a fee-waiver valued at approximately $15,000.

HONOLULU (July 22) -- East-West Center President Charles E. Morrison and Director of Education Terance W. Bigalke will be among the delegates of a U.S. higher education leaders’ mission to Indonesia July 26-31. Mission organizers have said that the delegation’s scheduled visit will not be altered by the recent hotel bombings in Jakarta.

HONOLULU (June 10) – The East-West Center has received a two-year grant of $94,747 from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership to support the Japan-United States Journalist Exchange .

This 12-day exchange program, co-sponsored by the East-West Center and Nihon Shinbun Kyokai (NSK), sends six to seven Japanese journalists to the United States and an equal number of U.S. journalists to Japan to broaden the journalists’ knowledge of the relationship and challenges faced between the two countries.

HONOLULU (Dec. 11, 2008) – The East-West Center (EWC) received a grant of $414,952 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development to support on-going research in Japan on family change. The multi-year study, “Innovations in Early Life Course Transitions,” focuses on the interplay of structural societal change, individual behavior and attitudes, and the emergence of an altered family institution in Japanese society.

HONOLULU (Dec.15) -- The East-West Center has been awarded a three-year grant totaling $275,000 from the Henry Luce Foundation to provide renewed support for the Korea-United States Journalists Exchange program.

HONOLULU (Oct. 8) – Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador John K. Veroneau will offer an update on U.S. trade policy at a breakfast briefing on Wed., Oct. 15, at the East-West Center’s Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center (Jefferson Hall, 1777 East-West Road).

HONOLULU (Aug. 29) – Four leading China-based journalists will speak on the impact and aftermath of the Olympics on China at an East-West Center luncheon on Friday, Sept. 5., at the Center’s Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center (Jefferson Hall, 1777 East-West Road).

HONOLULU (June 12) – The Chief Justice of Indonesia’s Supreme Court has signed a formal agreement with the East-West Center in Honolulu and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley to expand the human-rights training that the two institutions have been providing to Indonesian law officials for several years through their joint Asian International Justice Initiative.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed at the East-West Center on June 6 details a five-year commitment to conduct training programs for Indonesian judges, prosecutors, police and the National Human Rights Commission in order to “improve knowledge of human rights standards and how they can be implemented and applied by key judicial actors to promote the rule of law and the effectiveness of human rights courts and investigations.”

American and Asian Journalists to Focus on Issues
in the U.S. and among Asia’s Muslims

HONOLULU (Jan. 9, 2008) – U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice recently appointed four new members to three-year terms on the East-West Center’s Board of Governors. The new members are: Lori Forman, Microsoft director of community affairs for Asia; Theodore B. Lee, president of the Urban Land Company in San Francisco and Las Vegas; S. Linn Williams, executive vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer of the Mirant Corporation; and Michael K. Young, president of the University of Utah.

In addition, Rice re-appointed former U.S. Rep. for Hawaii Patricia F. Saiki to a second term on the board.

HONOLULU (Nov. 7) – The East-West Center (EWC) is now accepting applications for two journalism travel-study fellowships—the Spring 2008 Jefferson Fellowships for Journalists and the 4th Korea-United States Journalists Exchange.

The Spring 2008 Jefferson Fellowships program will take place May 3-25, 2008, and is open to journalists from the United States, Asia, and the Pacific islands. The theme for this program is “Beyond the Boomtowns: Development Challenges in The Other China.” Fellows will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii; and Beijing, Chongqing and Chengdu, China. The China study tour will include overland travel through smaller cities and rural areas. Fellows will visit regions that reflect different stages of China’s economic and political development.

HONOLULU (September 17) – Mary Townswick has taken up her new duties as visiting fellow and diplomat-in-residence at the East-West Center (EWC). Townswick, a 20-year veteran of the U.S Foreign Service, will serve in her new post until July 31, 2008. Townswick replaces Michael Yoder, also a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, as the EWC's diplomat-in-residence.

Honolulu (October 1) – The upcoming inaugural East-West Sports Summit hosted by the East-West Center (EWC) and Sports Marketing Japan on November 7-9 will feature China’s leading sports marketing guru, Bin Yuan.  She is the director of marketing for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and previously served as deputy director of international relations for the Olympic Games.

Yuan’s keynote address will provide a timely update on China’s progress with the Olympic preparations and marketing efforts.  So far they have secured more than 50 commercial sponsors, in addition to the 12 worldwide partners of the International Olympic Committee.

HONOLULU (August 23) -- The Asian International Justice Initiative (‘AIJI’) , a collaboration between the East-West Center, Hawaii and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley will hold a week-long workshop in international criminal law for the Office of the Co-Prosecutors (OCP) at the Khmer Rouge Tribunal August 27-31, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
