HONOLULU (Sept. 10) – Leslie M. Tsou, an 18-year veteran of the State Department’s Foreign Service, has joined the East-West Center for a one-year post as a visiting research fellow and diplomat-in-residence. Tsou will be at the Center through the end of June 2010.

 

She most recently served as the Political Officer at the U.S. Embassy in London, where she was the primary point person on Middle East issues, Iraq, Muslim engagement, and the United Kingdom’s domestic political system.

HONOLULU (June 5) – The deadline for the 2007 Fall  East-West Center Jefferson Fellowships applications is drawing near, according to Susan Kreifels, East-West Center media programs coordinator. Kreifels says all applications must be filed by June 20.

The Fall program, Mekong on the Move: Asia’s New Economic Frontier?, is open to Asian, Pacific Island, and U.S. journalists with at least five years experience. The three-week travel and dialogue program takes place Sept. 30 through Oct. 21. It begins at the East-West Center in Honolulu with journalists traveling from there to Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi.

Qualified journalists wishing to apply should visit the East-West Center website at www.eastwestcenter.org/jefferson for applications and details.

HONOLULU (Nov. 25, 2011) – The East-West Center is pleased to welcome the Henry Luce Foundation as a Gold Sponsor of the EWC’s 2012 International Media Conference, scheduled for June 22-24 in Seoul, South Korea. HONOLULU (Jan. 10, 2014) – Twenty K-12 educators from South Korea have arrived at the East-West Center to begin a month of residencies in U.S. school communities in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Vermont. The ROK-US Teacher Exchange Program global learning and school immersion program is coordinated by EWC’s AsiaPacificEd Program with funding from the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding under the auspices of UNESCO and the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Education. Later this year, American teachers from the U.S. host schools will travel to Korea for reciprocal exchange and learning.

East-West Center Awarded $750,000 for NASA-Funded Project on Changing Land Use in Southeast Asia

HONOLULU (Feb 11, 2014) – The East-West Center has been awarded a three-year, $750,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to study land-cover and land-use change in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Over the past half-century these countries have witnessed a major shift from subsistence agrarian economies to commercialized agriculture and, in the case of Thailand and Vietnam, industrialized societies. The project will study transitions in forests, boom crops and urban areas using remote sensing data sources and socioeconomic databases for the 2000-2012 period. The project’s aim is to enhance the conceptual underpinnings of land change science by integrating aspects of global markets, land use and political ecology to explicitly link land changes to local, national and international drivers.
