how to Here's how to work well with your ex, just like Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 09 Apr 2018 03:09:06 GMT Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone "We're still friends" is a common line one has heard several exes say. But how comfortably does a post-break-up relationship translate to working in the same office, where situations can lead to high-tension scenarios? Actors and exes Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone surely seem to have cracked the code, as the duo has worked on two films post calling it quits, the 2013 hit Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Tamasha (2015). The actors will also walk the ramp for a charity fashion show for designer Manish Malhotra later this month. How did they get to this point? "The biggest challenge in dealing with exes [or with anyone really] is that we don't leave the past in the past and allow it to affect our present and future. We start seeing people through a lens of our opinions and interpretations. When working with exes, it is important to have a heightened commitment to be mindful and be in the moment and not create conflicts with the ex - the source of which is very likely to be our past-based filters," says life coach Milind Jadhav. Jadhav feels, that a simple, yet powerful, way of dealing with your ex is to set your work priorities and do just what works for you. But do men and women react to a situation such as this in different ways? "Men tend to be patronising and vindictive. Women, on the other hand, can either withdraw or go hostile," says Dr Harish Shetty, psychiatrist, Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital. Dr Shetty feels that there's no perfect closure to any relationship - something from the past always lingers. There's nothing like neutral emotions. And the most untoward moments are when you are alone for a long time at your workplace. "Working with exes is a difficult situation to deal with. All offices have cultural activities, which involve dancing and drinking, and it is uncomfortable and risky to be together in such situations. Sometimes, these involve bringing along your current partners. Then there are birthday parties of colleagues and meeting common friends, or work-related travel. Work brings back past memories when you are doing similar tasks. Excessive withdrawal or excessive involvement can happen at a workspace without the person consciously doing it," says Dr Shetty. "Navigating uncomfortable conversations is purely a matter of how one 'listens' to one's ex. The best way is to do so without judgement, as if you do not know that person, as opposed to 'I know who s/he really is," sums up Jadhav. Famous exes who work together>> Actors Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory, have dated in the past. Cuoco went on to marry (and divorce) someone else. The two still remain friends and a popular on-screen couple.>> Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the founders of the couture giant Dolce & Gabbana, broke up in 2005 and continue to run the label together. "Everything is exactly the same. But no sex!" said Gabbana in an interview about their work relationship. Case in point"A couple broke up in college and ended up working for the same company. Everything was fine till they went for an office picnic where they had to dance. She called me up for advice and decided to refuse to dance. When they returned, he sent her a WhatsApp message for 'old times' sake'. She was tempted, but kept away. From then on, she knew exactly what to do. The key is to manage the initial trepidation. If you cross that phase, the resolve becomes stronger. You can also take the help of your current partner if they are supportive," says Dr Shetty. Dos and don'ts>> Your focus should only be your work.>> Work in groups.>> Don't move to your past. No personal chats, keep your conversations strictly related to work. Keep away from sharing nostalgic memories.>> Socialise along with office groups to create a buffer between you.>> Don't share old photographs.>> Don't discuss your present life.>> Don't wish on occasions beyond what is essential.>> Don't praise the other's attire, looks and any attribute not related to work. >> Avoid inviting each other to any other place, even for a casual conversation.>> Don't attend a post-work coffee or drink alone. Don't stay on longer than the work demands.>> Don't make any personal comments. If one person does, make it clear that you wish to stick to work-related talk.>> Don't use your intimate details to make loose comments. how to How to store jewellery to make it last By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 29 Apr 2018 10:30:00 GMT Representational picture Be it fashion jewellery or precious silver and gold, taking care of how you store them can ensure they last long, suggest experts. Garima Singh, co-founder and CEO at blingvine.com and jewellery designer Pooja Vaswani, have given a few tips on how to take care of your jewellery pieces: Clean your jewellery before storing: Sweat will change the colour of the pieces and make them look old. Therefore, it is very important that before storing, you wipe off all the sweat from the jewellery pieces and store it at concealed places. Ideally, store them in a jewellery box with multiple slots or store them separately in boxes they came in to avoid scratching. Airtight box or zip locks: Store your jewellery in an airtight box or zip lock to preserve the polish for a longer time. Your precious pearl pieces should be stored in a cloth-lined jewellery box or wrapped a soft cloth to maintain the shine and quality of pearls. Use anti-tarnish paper: While storing your fashion jewellery, it will be great if you wrap each piece in anti-tarnish paper or an eyeglass cloth. Anti-tarnish paper will maintain the shine of the jewellery. Separation is necessary: Do not keep two different type of jewellery in one box. It is very essential to store your jewellery in a separate jewellery box or secured containers that will prevent your baubles from moving around and preventing them from getting scratched and broken. Avoid wearing delicate jewellery while cooking, gymming, swimming, or any household chores. Stay away from extreme exposure to heat and light as gemstones like kunzite can fade or discolour. Always put on your jewellery last when dressing. It should be done after the use of make-up, cosmetics, perfume and lotions to avoid damage to delicate items. Clean your jewellery with warm water, mild liquid soap and soft brush in a glass bowl. Dry it thoroughly before storing it back. One could use a precious metal polishing cloth to remove tarnish. how to Mumbai restaurateurs talk about how tough it is to achieve zero waste status By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 27 Aug 2017 06:26:09 GMT When restaurateurs lunch together the conversation always, ultimately, comes down to food and the discussion of food wastage is never far off. At a shoot for mid-day recently, chefs Kelvin Cheung (Bastian), Karishma Dalal (Bombay Salad Co) and Pooja Dhingra (Le 15 Cafe) lamented the lack of composting facilities in the city. They say they have been trying hard to find an eco-friendly solution for their waste, much of which ends up being handed to the local civic body and ends up in a landfill. They have considered joining forces and starting their own composting facility, but it's early days. Cheung, Dalal and Dhingra might find kindred spirits in other city restaurateurs who face a similar challenge. While some compost a small percentage of the garbage they generate daily, others try and reuse, some control output by cooking on a need-per-order basis, but the greater amount gets binned. Bombay Salad Co, Bandra WestWaste generated every week: 700 kgWaste disposed organically every week: Approx 50 kg Karishma Dalal (in pic), who runs Bandra's hip Bombay Salad Co, is waiting for someone to come up with a novel idea that could use all the organic waste her restaurant generates. "As we are a salad bar, most of our waste is made up of peels, stalks and leaves. Around 15 per cent is just cabbage!" As a restaurateur, it would be a huge economical undertaking for Dalal to send her garbage to a large composting facility, which Mumbai doesn't seem to have . "I have kept an eye out and nobody collects it on a large scale. The ones who do, in the suburbs, want me to arrange transportation."What sheâÂÂis doing right: Distributing garbage to locals who compost at homeSolution: Dalal is trying to do her bit. Every week, she gives around five kg to Bandra residents who compost at home, and around 20 kg every three days to a friend from Pune who uses it in his nursery. "And, BMC comes twice a day for the rest." Pod Supply, Andheri West (Meal prep service)Waste generated every week: Approx 30 kgWaste disposed organically every week: None Chef Harsh Dixit says they follow waste management procedures including segregation as they only prep an order according to required quantities. He also says that they have never tried composting. "I have worked in three major cities - Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi - before Pod Supply, but I have never experienced restaurants composting their waste. I do believe with the changing food scene in the country; chefs and restaurant owners being more aware about practices like these, it will soon be adopted too."What they are doing right: Achieve minimal waste by using ingredients to the maximumSolution: "For example, we use the vegetable peels/fish bones to make stock which we use to cook rice, make soups and base for curries. Off cuts of meats and seafood are used for the kitchen staff meals. But we do land up with a lot of egg yolks as we use more of whites." Ministry of Salad, Breach CandyWaste generated every week: Approx 4 to 5 kgWaste disposed organically every week: Approx 4 to 5 kgHead Chef Akanksha Saigal says the main challenge she faces is that one day's waste is never the same as the next. It depends on the quantity of order versus what is consumed. "Luckily for us, our estimates are usually close to the benchmark," she says. She does say that in ideal conditions, they would like to compost this waste themselves or via an agency, however, as per regulations, they would need a license to do it. "At our end, we try to keep the waste down and only hope that the BMC makes good use of it." What they are doing right: Reducing waste generated by ordering only what's necessary The restaurant works on an aggressive inventory system with the core team defining approximate sales per day. "This experience has made us almost intuitive, and we know how much to order for a particular day. Ordering right is the key here." Saigal also insists on using ingredients across dishes to ensure less wastage. Lord of the Drinks, Andheri WestWaste generated every week: Approx 700 kgWaste composted every week: NoneAt the Andheri hotspot, a majority of its waste comes from leafy greens and other vegetables since not all parts of every vegetable can be consumed. "Therefore, waste from meat is lesser," says JJ, Corporate Chef. The restaurant has tried composting, but it's not cost effective. "We use the segregation method. Due to lack of space for storing waste in Mumbai, a part of it usually gets disposed in garbage vans. I think the answer could be to install composting machines. However, these may not be cost effective for every establishment," he says. What they are doing right: Segregating dry and wet garbage and using the former for manure, inhouseSolution: The food waste is usually segregated between dry and wet. "Composting of dry garbage is easy at the restaurant level as most of it gets reused while gardening and makes for good manure," says JJ. But most of the wet garbage is binned. "There is hardly any government support in composting of such garbage." Full Article

how to From Flop Show to Wagle Ki Duniya, we hope to see these shows on TV again! By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 15 Apr 2020 04:15:00 GMT While many of us are enjoying the quarantine time with our family, it has somewhere directly impacted the Indian television. There have been no streaming of the latest episodes from our favourite shows on TV anymore. However, this has helped in the comeback of iconic shows like Ramayana and Mahabharat on Doordarshan. The government-run channel may have lost its magic along the way but no amount of time spent on Netflix or Hotstar can replace the nostalgia! Right? As part of its #StayHomeIndia campaign during the lockdown, Doordarshan is telecasting its popular shows of the 1980s, which include Ramayan, Mahabharat, Circus, Dekh Bhai Dekh and Chanakya. Fans of shows of that era have been active on social media telling DD which other shows it needs to re-run. Here are some of the popular shows that Doordarshan should re-telecast. Flop Show The sitcom first aired in 1989. Written and directed by Jaspal Bhatti, who also played as the main character, was a satire on the socio-cultural problems faced by the common man in India at the time. Flop Show was highly popular among the masses, with the satire of late Jaspal Bhatti keeping us entertained. Bharat Ek Khoj A stellar series based on Jawaharlal Nehru's book 'The Discovery of India', Bharat Ek Khoj depicted the history of India, from its origin till Independence. Directed by Shyam Benegal, Roshan Seth played Nehru, and also doubled up as the storyteller. Stalwarts like Om Puri, Tom Alter and Sadashiv Amrapurkar were also part of the show. Surabhi A hugely popular cultural magazine show of the 90s, Surabhi was delightfully anchored by Renuka Shahane and Siddharth Kak. The show became hugely popular among audiences as it invited viewer participation, and people sent in postcards in big numbers in an era before mobiles and the internet. Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan This was the first talk show of Indian television, and arguably one of the most popular ones ever. It was hosted by Tabassum, who was once a popular child star. Her affable demeanour towards the celebrity guests made the show a worthy watch. The format wherein chat was mixed with film scenes was also much-liked by the audiences. Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi As one of the first hit sitcoms on Indian television, the show, which aired on Doordarshan in 1984, helped established actors Shafi Inamdar, Satish Shah, Rakesh Bedi and Swaroop Sampat as household names. A trademark of the Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi were the characters played by Satish Shah. In each episode, Shah played a different character who used to be a key element in the plot. Wagle Ki Duniya Anjan Srivastav brought issues of the common man into focus through Wagle Ki Duniya, created by noted cartoonist RK Laxman about the issues of the common middle-class Indian man. It starred Anjan Srivastava as a bumbling sales clerk and Bharati Achrekar played his wife. Wagle Ki Duniya had Shah Rukh Khan making a guest appearance in one of the episodes, courtesy his association with the show’s director, Kundan Shah, with whom he later collaborated in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). how to How to navigate the world of dating profiles? Experts share their wisdom By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 21 May 2017 04:13:19 GMT Illustration/Uday Mohite I am looking for a sapiosexual guy." That's the line, which ran below the photograph of a gorgeous woman, on writer Jaidev Hemmady's Tinder page. Chancing upon it a few months ago, Hemmady had two options - either swipe left or right. He chose the latter. Why? "I had never heard the word before. It immediately aroused my curiosity," the 35-year-old recalls. Thinking of it now, Hemmady tells us it was probably his most foolish decision ever. "When we did begin to converse, I asked her what she meant by sapiosexual," he says. She said it was "fascination for intellectual men". "So, would she choose an average-looking man with the IQ of a rocket scientist?" To his surprise, the girl typed in a 'NO'. "He has to be both, handsome and smart," she insisted. One possible reason for this artifice in vocabulary could be the nature of online dating. Here, as everywhere else, first impressions matter. Only last week, IllicitEncounters.com, UK's leading dating website for married people, released a survey after analysing four lakh profiles, where it threw a few words of caution when describing oneself on dating apps. While words like 'confident' and 'honest' earned a good score, 'shy' and 'happy' were major put-offs. With technical details playing a key role, relationship coaches are now being roped in to add finesse to people's dating profiles. When we enquired, most coaches claimed that 50 per cent of their clients were currently investing in online image building. The rules may differ for each, but if you want to be a smooth player in the swipe game, here's what you could do. Ritesh Uttamchandani Treat profile pic with kindnessSome time ago, freelance photographer Ritesh Uttamchandani was asked if he was interested in clicking profile shots for dating apps. "Some of the photos you see on these apps are horrendous, boring and repetitive," he rues. Uttamchandani, who joined a few dating apps out of sheer curiosity, says that because of the nature of his job, it wasn't hard for him to see through the sham behind the lens. According to him, there are four kinds of set images common to most profiles - the side profile, the exotic destination shot, the selfie and one that flashes a facial asset. Of the four, he advises avoiding the selfies. "Pout selfies are the worst." If Uttamchandani is thinking aesthetics, London-based Dr Siva, who is a physician and relationship expert and runs drsivacoaching.com, says that the profile picture also reflects how serious you are about the dating game. "Larger women should not be ashamed of their body type. Men like women who are comfortable in their own skin," claims Dr Siva. Mumbai-based Shiva, the head coach of Real Man Academy, which runs dating and seduction workshops, advises following the ABS rule. A implies having pictures that show you lead an 'active' lifestyle. B means portraying a 'bold' body language. (Example: no crossed legs). S is showing off your 'social' circle. "If there are women in your photograph, it's good, because it shows they are comfortable with you." Nidhi Sharma Be quirky with your bio"Be original when describing oneself," says Nidhi Sharma (47), personal branding coach at Bon Impressions in Mumbai. "Never put up an inspirational quote in your bio. It would be stupid to believe that someone is going to date the person who scripted that quote," she says. Instead, she suggests writing something that reflects your attitude towards life. Elizabeth Sullivan, a dating coach, who runs Lovementor.com in London, advises using positive language to describe oneself. "Add some humour. But, don't force it because people can see through it." Hemmady says, "I prefer women who don't shy away from talking about their food adventures." Dr Siva After you've been swiped rightAccording to Nidhi, a lot of men come across as being very forceful and persistent, once they've got a right-swipe from someone they have taken a liking to. "Begin with a 'hello, how are you?' even if that means sounding a tad bit formal. Let the rapport develop before getting personal," she suggests. Also, when your 'prospective date' messages, do not respond immediately, says Shiva. "It shows you have lots of free time. At a subtle level it communicates that she/he is the only person who is texting you." Being online all the time can also be a turn-off. "That shows you don't have much going on in your life. Especially on weekends, be completely offline. As the saying goes, fake it till you make it," Shiva says. Online dating is just a tiny window to your world. "It's a practising tool, until that door really opens," Sullivan says. Full Article
