Pac-12 Networks' Ashley Adamson catches up with Oregon's "Big 3" of Sabrina Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard and Satou Sabally to hear how they're adjusting to the new world without sports while still preparing for the WNBA Draft on April 17. They also share how they're staying hungry for basketball during the hiatus.

After sweeping every national player of the year award, Sabrina Ionescu is off to the WNBA level where her skills will make an instant impact — not just to her new team but the league as a whole. She averaged 17.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists for the Ducks in 2019-20, rewriting her own NCAA career triple-double record and becoming the first in college basketball history with at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists.

Athletic forward Satou Sabally is preparing to take the leap to the WNBA level following three productive seasons at Oregon. As a junior, she averaged 16.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while helping the Ducks sweep the Pac-12 regular season and tournament titles. At 6-foot-4, she also drained 45 3-pointers for Oregon in 2019-20 while notching a career-best average of 2.3 assists per game.

Ruthy Hebard, who ranks 2nd in Oregon history in points (2,368) and 3rd in rebounds (1,299), prepares to play in the WNBA following four years in Eugene. Hebard is the Oregon and Pac-12 all-time leader in career field-goal percentage (65.1) and averaged 17.3 points per game and a career-high 9.6 rebounds per game as a senior.

Oregon State guard Mikayla Pivec is the epitome of a versatile player. Her 1,030 career rebounds were the most in school history, and she finished just one assist shy of becoming the first in OSU history to tally 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists. She'll head to the WNBA looking to showcase her talents at the next level following the 2020 WNBA Draft.

UCLA guard Japreece Dean is primed to shine at the next level as she heads to the WNBA Draft in April. The do-it-all point-woman was an All-Pac-12 honoree last season, and one of only seven D-1 hoopers with at least 13 points and 5.5 assists per game.

With the spotlight on her growing ever brighter, Sabrina Ionescu is aware she's becoming her own brand. One of the most decorated players in women's college basketball, Ionescu is about to go pro with the WNBA draft coming up Friday. Ionescu said Oregon has prepared her to understand how much impact she can have in the community and on women's basketball.

This paper develops deterministic upper and lower bounds on the influence measure in a network, more precisely, the expected number of nodes that a seed set can influence in the independent cascade model. In particular, our bounds exploit r-nonbacktracking walks and Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre (FKG) type inequalities, and are computed by message passing algorithms. Further, we provide parameterized versions of the bounds that control the trade-off between efficiency and accuracy. Finally, the tightness of the bounds is illustrated on various network models.

Abstract:
The log-linear Birnbaum–Saunders model has been widely used in empirical applications. We introduce an extension of this model based on a recently proposed version of the Birnbaum–Saunders distribution which is more flexible than the standard Birnbaum–Saunders law since its density may assume both unimodal and bimodal shapes. We show how to perform point estimation, interval estimation and hypothesis testing inferences on the parameters that index the regression model we propose. We also present a number of diagnostic tools, such as residual analysis, local influence, generalized leverage, generalized Cook’s distance and model misspecification tests. We investigate the usefulness of model selection criteria and the accuracy of prediction intervals for the proposed model. Results of Monte Carlo simulations are presented. Finally, we also present and discuss an empirical application.

Abstract:
The Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) distribution has been largely studied and applied. A random variable with BS distribution is a transformation of another random variable with standard normal distribution. Generalized BS distributions are obtained when the normally distributed random variable is replaced by another symmetrically distributed random variable. This allows us to obtain a wide class of positively skewed models with lighter and heavier tails than the BS model. Its failure rate admits several shapes, including the unimodal case, with its change-point being able to be used for different purposes. For example, to establish the reduction in a dose, and then in the cost of the medical treatment. We analyze the failure rates of generalized BS distributions obtained by the logistic, normal and Student-t distributions, considering their shape and change-point, estimating them, evaluating their robustness, assessing their performance by simulations, and applying the results to real data from different areas.

Introducing common shocks is a popular dependence modelling approach, with some recent applications in loss reserving. The main advantage of this approach is the ability to capture structural dependence coming from known relationships. In addition, it helps with the parsimonious construction of correlation matrices of large dimensions. However, complications arise in the presence of "unbalanced data", that is, when (expected) magnitude of observations over a single triangle, or between triangles, can vary substantially. Specifically, if a single common shock is applied to all of these cells, it can contribute insignificantly to the larger values and/or swamp the smaller ones, unless careful adjustments are made. This problem is further complicated in applications involving negative claim amounts. In this paper, we address this problem in the loss reserving context using a common shock Tweedie approach for unbalanced data. We show that the solution not only provides a much better balance of the common shock proportions relative to the unbalanced data, but it is also parsimonious. Finally, the common shock Tweedie model also provides distributional tractability.
