Graduate Students from 27 Nations to Gather at International Conference on Asia Pacific Research
HONOLULU (Feb. 10) -- More than 175 graduate students from 63 universities in 27 nations are set to gather this week at the Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center in Honolulu to present their research at the East-West Center’s 8th annual International Graduate Student Conference. The interdisciplinary gathering, planned and organized by EWC students, is the largest of its kind worldwide. All conference sessions are free and open to the public, with the exception of meals and receptions.

Asia Pacific Scholars, Officials and Business Leaders to Gather at International Conference in Bali
HONOLULU (Sept. 30) -- Nearly 500 scholars, officials, educators and business leaders will gather in Bali November 13-15 for an international conference on the theme of "Building an Asia Pacific Community: Unity in Diversity."

Conference sessions will cover current regional issues, including international relations, security, democracy and Islam, global warming, volunteerism, gender issues, innovation, health, business, and social and cultural issues.

Among the featured speakers will be the new governor of Bali; Indonesia’s ministers of trade, people’s welfare and women’s empowerment; the U.S. ambassador to Indonesia; the governor of Hawaii; the president of the East-West Center; and business leaders.

HONOLULU (Feb. 4) -- The Asian International Justice Initiative (AIJI), a collaboration between the East-West Center in Hawaii and the War Crimes Studies Center at the University of California, Berkeley, has begun a week and a half of training workshops in international law for all the judges of the Khmer Rouge war-crimes tribunal in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.  The workshops are focusing on legal issues likely to play a central role in the tribunal’s upcoming trials.

SEOUL (June 20, 2012) – Several hundred journalists and media experts from more than 100 news organizations in 25 countries will gather in Seoul, South Korea June 22-24 to discuss the latest information on the impact of new and social media on events and news coverage in Asia and the Pacific.

The conference on the theme of “Networked News: How New Media Is Shaping Stories in Asia and the Pacific” will be covered online at a special website, EastWestCenter.org/IMC 2012. EWC Board of Governors Elects Business Leaders Ratan Tata and Takeshi Niinami as International Members

HONOLULU (Nov. 18, 2013) – The East-West Center’s Board of Governors has elected two new international members: Indian business leader Ratan N. Tata, who is returning to the board after serving several terms between 1993 and 2004, and first-time EWC board member Takeshi Niinami, CEO of Japan’s Lawson, Inc.

East-West Center Students from South Pacific and Timor Leste Gain U.S. Insight, Experience Through D.C. Internships

Interpreting American Public Opinion on International Trade: How Should Asia Respond?

By Marcus Noland HONOLULU (August 23, 2019)—For three generations, the United States championed a rules-based multilateral trading system. That stance was overturned by the election of an avowed protectionist, Donald Trump, as president. It would be understandable for Asians to wonder if this shift amounts to a permanent change in U.S. trade policy, and if so, how to proceed. Trump’s presidential campaign was notable in that it emphasized two issues—immigration and trade—that had seldom been in the forefront of U.S. presidential campaigns. But public opinion polls revealed that these issues were of growing importance to a sizeable number of voters whose preferences mirrored Trump’s protectionist positions.
