The Unfailing Watch

Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. (Psalm 121:4)

Jehovah is "the Keeper of Israel." No form of unconsciousness ever steals over Him, neither the deeper slumber nor the slighter sleep. He never fails to watch the house and the heart of His people. This is a sufficient reason for our resting in perfect peace. Alexander said that he slept because his friend Parmenio watched; much more may we sleep because our God is our guard.

"Behold" is here set up to call our attention to the cheering truth. Israel, when he had a stone for his pillow, fell asleep; but His God was awake and came in vision to His servant. When we lie defenseless, Jehovah Himself will cover our head.

The Lord keeps His people as a rich man keeps his treasure, as a captain keeps a city with a garrison, as a sentry keeps watch over his sovereign. None can harm those who are in such keeping. Let me put my soul into His dear hands. He never forgets us, never ceases actively to care for us, never finds Himself unable to preserve us.

O my Lord, keep me, lest I wander and fall and perish. Keep me, that I may keep Thy commandments. By Thine unslumbering care prevent my sleeping like the sluggard and perishing like those who sleep the sleep of death.

Make Widgets 10.3.9 Compatible

For folks using Mac OS X 10.3.9 and enjoying widgets thanks to Mesa Dynamics’ Amnesty Widget Browser, I have posted the contents of the WidgetResources directory for download. Just unzip it and drop it in /System/Library/ and you will have access to widgets that are not “backwards compatible.”

Workaround for IP Locator and Safari 3 beta

Safari 3 beta breaks widgets that use the search history feature of search input field types. I have put together a version of IP Locator with that feature disabled for anyone who wants to continue using it with the broken version of Safari. You can download it here. A bug has been filed with Apple and I suspect this will be a fairly high priority fix considering how many Dashboard widgets are affected.

Trump's Draft Evader Precipice

The United States is hovering at a precarious point in our history.  The choice is to either go forward with moral clarity or succumb to our violent past with symptoms of racism, xenophobia, nativism, sexism, misogyny, ageism, anti-Veterans, anti-American values and more.

Unfortunately, the party of Lincoln is wracked with dangerous splits with the only common factors being racism, sexism, equivocations and presidential obstruction.  Party vision extends only to the present and disregards past lessons to integrate with the future.  The most important factors seem to be hindering the President, haranguing Hillary Clinton and uttering senseless statements.

Presumptive presidential candidate Donald John Trump spouts a litany of offensive equivocations, governmental and global ignorance, and flirtation with right wing racism and anti-Semitism.  His attacks on people of color, Judaism, women and Muslims seem to evolve from the same extremist philosophy; and a misguided plan to generate support from a base believing the same.

Trump’s early life shows incorrigibility with parental sentence of military school beginning at age twelve. The next six years were spent with a heavy program of military ethics, duty and honor. He seems to have rebelled against these and has displayed questionable patriotism, respect for the fallen and ignorance of American values.

Reaching the age of eighteen meant Selective Service registration and Trump was no exception. Following indicates his draft history:

            2-S school exemption                   7/28/64
            2-S school exemption                   12/14/65
            1-A induction eligible                   11/22/66
            2-S school exemption                   12/13/66
            2-S school exemption                   1/16/68
            1-A induction eligible                    7/9/68
            1-Y not eligible                               10/15/68

Trump passed his military physical examination on 12/15/66 with no indication of any disqualifying conditions. He received two successive exemptions for college, but faced a Fortunate Son dilemma due to the Vietnam War heating up. Trump was briefly eligible for entry beginning on 11/22/66, but was able to achieve more 2-S deferments until July, 1968. He now faced the realistic expectation of military service since there were no more college exemptions to be had.  The Vietnam War was at its apex following the Tet Offensive in late January, 1968, and troop strength was over 500,000.  Trump underwent another service physical on 9/17/68 presenting a private physician letter attesting to a diagnosis of bone heel spurs.  Young Trump was given an exemption of 1-Y, not eligible for induction except in time of national emergency or declared war. This seems odd since the young man participated in athletics at the military academy and secondly, the US was in dire need of more military manpower to fight the war.  Subsequently, many young men were inducted into with minor medical or psychological issues to fill the rolls. Bone heel spurs were not necessarily disqualifying since men were being accepted with flat feet, a more debilitating condition.  The only other factor to take into consideration is relatively simple-he was the son of a millionaire thus in today’s parlance, affluenza.  Trump later bragged his condition was not painful and temporary thus negating the 1-Y rating given and proving his Fortunate Son status.  He also stated his personal Vietnam was partying and bedding beautiful women with a developing fear of venereal disease. Donnie has refused to discuss the draft subject during the campaign rebuffing all questions. One can only ponder the fate of those who took his place in the draft.

This Week's Playlist Theme

If you keep tabs on our blog, you probably know we switch out our songs every week to keep things interesting - and to keep me from getting lazy. Every now and again we add a little theme to our playlist. This week, it's one-word song titles. Before music aficiondos flame us we'll own up to it straightaway - yeah, we fudged a little on the shoulder song by removing The from the title. Turns out we just did the only other shoulder song we have handy with a one-word title (Freestyler)!

Will Your New Year's Resolution Stick?

Say, ever wanted the club to yourself during your workout? Sick of waiting on machines? Tired of setting up in the back row of full classes? Well, this is the week you've been waiting for... Pick a club, just about any club right now, and chances are you'll find the tranquility you so desperately seek.

But not for long... Here in the States, at least, January is by far the biggest sales month for fitness clubs. Yep, come January 2nd (gosh, maybe even January 1st) practically every club from sea to shining sea will be packed with New Year's Resolutioners - those fine folks who promise themselves that this year it'll all be different. Yes, for two, maybe even three whole weeks they'll plug away. But then the reality of life sets in, and by February it's back to the same ol', same ol' - oh, there'll be a few new faces, but mostly the same ones as before.

Will you be different? We hope so. If you're a newbie, remember this: Anything you do regularly for a month becomes part of your life. Healthy living - and that includes exercise - is for everyone. We know, because we both struggled with obesity for years. It's the fear of our past that motivates our butts right back into that gym week after week. So take heart... if a couple of previously-overweight geeks like us can get it done, surely you can!

Our 'New Stuff' Playlist

This week's playlist (at left) probably seems unremarkable to most instructors, but for us it's a little different - see, we run mostly "old" songs in our classes. Old for us means anything before release 50 - mostly we gravitate to the 30's and 40's series, then throw in a 50's series track or two for good measure.

Well, Tami picks a theme for each week's playlist, and this week it's new stuff only. Guess we won't need to blow the dust off any old CDs this time around!

3

Our 'Old Stuff' Playlist

What goes up must come down.
What goes around comes around.
One good turn deserves another.

And... you guessed it:

What's old is new again.

Naturally. We did our 'new stuff' playlist a week or so ago, and now it's time rewind all the way back to the 30's series, because - well, for us at least - that's about as far back as we can go. (playlist at left)

But anyway... We find it's a little like climbing back on that bicycle you haven't ridden in awhile - No matter how long it's been, one crank of the pedals and it feels just as natural as ever. It's that pleasant mix of comfort and familiarity that makes the whole experience just slightly more enjoyable than normal.

Truth be told, though, here's what we really like about the 'old stuff' playlist: Even if we totally forget the choreography, we've heard these songs so many times we can fake our way through it and at least look like we know what we're doing!

Tami Fulfills Her 2008 New Year's Resolution (pics)

One of the things I most respect about Tami is the way she keeps her promises - both to others, and to herself. If you've been following our blog for awhile you may remember her New Year's Resolution to walk 500 miles. She had me put together a little spreadsheet on her laptop where she could enter her mileage each day. Next to each entry it showed mileage accumulated to-date, along with a comparison to the minimum mileage needed to complete 500 miles by year end. Every now and again she tried to turn the milestones into shoe-buying excuses -- "Hey Sweetie, I just crossed 300 miles - don't you think that deserves a new pair of shoes?"

Well, it was my honor to walk the last 40 or so miles with her during our vacation in Montana's Glacier National Park these last two weeks. I don't know exactly where or when we crossed that 500th mile, but I do know that the mountains there in Glacier are a whole lot taller than the ones back home. I also decided I prefer climbing over descending - Tami practically runs down the mountains, leaving me stumbling along behind in a contrail of dust (see video below). She's a hiking machine. Me, I'm more of a pack mule - I get to carry the water, lunches, cameras, maps, and sunscreen. Which works out fine, since I'm always stopping to take pictures anyway! Enjoy...
