wire Why the UK's porn block is one of the worst ideas ever | WIRED Explains By www.wired.com Published On :: Thu, 10 Jan 2019 03:16:07 +0000 Since 2015 the UK government has been trying to impose restrictions on access to porn. All of the legal measures needed to do so have passed and now it is only a matter of time until changes start to happen across the web. But the idea (and the execution) is fundamentally flawed. The UK's film certification board, an organisation with a limited digital background, has been put in charge of implementing the policy and one of the main age verification systems is owned by the world's largest porn company. The result? Potentially profound and damaging implications for privacy and a deluge of data on the private habits of millions of people just waiting to be hacked. wire What is Article 13 and will it kill memes? | WIRED Explains By www.wired.com Published On :: Mon, 25 Mar 2019 05:24:23 +0000 The European Union Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, to use its full name, requires the likes of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to take more responsibility for copyrighted material being shared illegally on their platforms. It's become known by its most controversial segment, called Article 13, which critics claim will have a detrimental impact on creators online. YouTube, and YouTubers, have become the most vocal opponents of the proposal. But Article 13 and the Directive on Copyright isn’t law yet. It still has to go through a series of steps before it becomes finalised as an EU directive, and it's currently stalling as European Union member states can't agree on the final wording of the Directive. To help clear things up, here’s WIRED’s guide to the EU Directive on Copyright. wire Does microdosing LSD make you smarter? | WIRED Explains By www.wired.com Published On :: Tue, 14 May 2019 04:12:37 +0000 Microdosing psychedelics refers to the practice of taking tiny amounts of drugs such as LSD or magic mushrooms. Some people claim that microdosing brings them benefits such as improved mood, focus or creativity. But there’s very little scientific evidence to show which effects microdosing actually has – or if it has any at all. Now, several groups of researchers are running placebo-controlled studies to explore what microdosing does. They ask participants to take either microdoses or placebos, without telling them which they are getting, then have them complete tasks testing things like cognitive function and psychological wellbeing. Having a placebo control is particularly important, as otherwise the reported effects of microdosing could be down to a placebo response rather than a physiological effect of the drug. #microdosing #lsd #psychedelics Full Article
