A3C: A Musical Journey Through Atlanta's Hip-Hop History

Since hip-hop first got its start in 1973, two cities were the main players in driving its style and sound. On the East Coast there was New York, and on the West Coast there was L.A. Atlanta is now home to many of hip-hop’s current and former stars, making it the “third coast” in A3C’s “All Three Coasts” moniker. As the East Coast-West Coast rivalry came to a head in 1995, a duo from Atlanta named OutKast managed to win Best New Rap Group at the Source Awards. While the New York-heavy crowd booed, Andre 3000 grabbed the award and took the audience to task. “I’m tired of folks, you know what I’m saying. The close-minded folks. It’s like we got a demo tape and don’t nobody want to hear it. But it’s like this: The South got something to say, that’s all I got to say.” Hip-hop made its way in Atlanta before then, with artists like Kilo Ali, MC Shy-D and Raheem the Dream producing their own take on popular Miami bass music. And Arrested Development even won two Grammys in 1993 for their song

Atlanta's New Soccer Team 'United' Ahead of Inaugural Season

Atlanta’s first Major League Soccer team plays its inaugural game Sunday to a sold out crowd. Atlanta United hosts one of the league’s founding clubs, the well-established New York Red Bulls. It’ll be a tough contest for the fledgling Atlanta team. Yesterday, I drove out to Flowery Branch to see how they’re playing and feeling ahead of their first game. About three dozen soccer players are scrimmaging in small groups of six at their practice facility about an hour north of Atlanta. They run constantly, quickly passing a ball between themselves in square “fields” demarcated by small orange cones. Sharp-eyed coaches walk around blowing whistles and yelling feedback. The players and coaches communicate seamlessly in English and Spanish. "There’s a few coaches who speak English and Spanish as well so they just translate here and there." 19-year-old defender Miles Robinson is from Massachusetts, but says he’s used to an international work environment. Odd of an ER bill in France coming across the Atlantic?

I had a minor stumble in Paris last month and ended up visiting an urgent care. They took me in and patched me up and sent me on my way. What are the odds a bill will eventually find its way across the Atlantic to me in the US?

I was on a scooter tour of the Champs Elysees when I took a tumble and my glasses took a chunk out of my eyebrow. I was the only person on the tour, so the tour operator called to figure out which hospital to take me to and we scooted over. My wife was back in the hotel room setting up a case with our Cigna International SOS health coverage, who reached out to me while I was filling out the paperwork at the intake / waiting room. "Oh no, that is not one of our hospitals, we'll have to do it as a post-service reimbursement, is that OK?" and yeah that was fine. Maybe 10 minutes later they brought me back to triage to make sure I wasn't in acute danger before sending me back to the waiting room. Maybe another 10 minutes later they brought me back to a private room, the doctor looked at me and said "ah yeah, that will need to be closed up, let me bring in another coworker to confirm", and maybe 10 minutes later my eyebrow was glued up and the doctor was escorting me to a discharge waiting room. 2 weeks later the wound is a tiny little scar hiding behind my eyebrow, so well done, doc, and bravo French healthcare for making an urgent care case take maybe an hour, tops?

But while I was checking if I needed to visit anyone to arrange for payment before I left, they seemed to be being mostly polite about the whole concept of paying for health care and just gave me some discharge paperwork which only has the usual privacy policy fine print on it as well as a brief summation of my treatment. They do have my home address from intake, so it's _possible_, but is it actually likely?

I mean I guess the alternative question is how long do I need to stall Cigna's International SOS before the whole thing turns into an amusing story about how I spent a few hours on vacation in the French ER and getting my glasses replaced before I could finish a coffee at the corner cafe.

NG Maps Produces Online Geotourism Atlas for Greater Yellowstone

National Geographic’s Maps Division and Center for Sustainable Destinations teamed up to produce the first NG-developed Online Geotourism MapGuide to support sustainable tourism across the Greater Yellowstone region of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.

The site, http://www.yellowstonegeotourism.org/, which launched on March 31st, is open to anyone to discover and share information about unique features, tours, and businesses that best represent and sustain the natural and cultural character of the region. Visitors can also request a free print MapGuide.

Geotourism is the kind of travel that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place — its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. Online Geotourism MapGuides are web versions of the print maps that National Geographic has developed for a number of regions around the world, including Crown of the Continent, Baja California, and Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom to name a few.

In addition to producing print and/or web maps, these projects bring together diverse representatives from the local communities to collectively define what makes their region special and how best to communicate it to the rest of the world. NG Maps is excited to participate in these projects that help travelers and local communities discover and preserve special places around the world. Anyone interested in developing a Geotourism MapGuide for their region, or simply becoming a “Geotraveler” should visit http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/.

NG Atlas wins British award

By David Miller
Senior Editor, NG Maps

The "National Geographic Visual Atlas of the World" won the prestigious John C. Bartholomew Award at this year’s British Cartographic Society meeting near London. Rebecca Hill, international marketing director at National Geographic’s London office, accepted the award for the Book Publishing Group, which produced the atlas in 2008.

The award, sponsored by the Bartholomew family and HarperCollins, recognizes “originality and excellence in the field of thematic cartography with emphasis on effective communication of the intended theme or themes.” Now in its 30th year, the award includes an engraved crystal trophy and award certificate. Among the many entries, the "Visual Atlas of the World" was singled out for special praise from the judges: “This atlas lives up to its title, and through a large series of well-compiled, beautifully designed thematic maps presents a dramatic picture of today’s world and the issues it faces.”

The "Visual Atlas of the World," with 416 pages, 350 maps and more than 600 photographs, satellite images and illustrations, reveals a common planetary heritage by highlighting World Heritage sites.

“The atlas blends two of National Geographic bests—state-of-the-art cartography and brilliant photography, which together tell compelling stories across the globe," said Carl Mehler, director of maps and project editor for the atlas.

"The collective efforts, talent and innovation of the atlas staff made this project materialize into a uniquely diverse cartographic collection. We're honored and delighted to receive this recognition from the British Cartographic Society,” he continued.
