Neurodiversity in the Workplace (Part 1) (November 14, 2024 10:00am)

Event Begins: Thursday, November 14, 2024 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Neurodiversity is the new hot topic in the realm of disability inclusion and accessibility—and with good reason. A significant percentage of people are now recognized as having neurotypes that are not well supported by societal norms and our collective understanding of how to communicate across and support neurodiversity is still developing. Fortunately researchers, educators, and advocates who identify as neurodivergent are contributing to a growing body of best practices.

Join the LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigators for this two-part workshop to learn about neurodiversity and how we can all start creating more neuroinclusive workplaces.

Participants will:
1. Understand what neurodiversity is and how the concept has evolved over time.
2. Reflect on the ways neurodiversity shapes our experiences, behaviors, aptitudes, and understanding of the world.
3. Gain insight into how contemporary work norms can exclude and create barriers for a range of neurotypes.
4. Explore neuroinclusive practices we can proactively integrate into our workplaces.
5. Become familiar with relevant resources for LSA employees.

Audience: This is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee, including our student employees. LSA employees receive priority access, so while external guests are welcome to register they may be waitlisted and allocated spots as space allows.

Important note: Please do your best to register for and attend both parts 1 and 2 as the content builds on itself. This workshop will not be recorded.

Re: [manrs-community] Implementing Decentralized RPKI with Blockchain Technology

Posted by Brandon Z. on Nov 13

Hi guys,

In technical terms, RIRs can indeed configure IPs to become RPKI invalid.
However, my point is not to remove RPKI but to make it invalid.

This could happen; for example, RIPE was required to remove all IRRs
related to Russia (I'm glad RIPE has not done this).

Decentralization can address this issue; it's not just a hype concept.

Brandon, I blockchain and BGP were discussed on NANOG some years ago, back
when the deployment of RPKI was brought up. Short answer - it won't solve jack
and will use tons of computation power.

I'm not really going to go into details, but essentially adding a band-aid
instead of adopting RPKI and addressing the issues with RIR is not the best
course of action.

In such a scenario I’d argue for less automation to prevent such a rogue RIR from being able to cause such a disruption
to the Internet.

To expand on what Tom mentioned, Networks are not yet rejecting announcements with a NotFound validation. Even if such
an event did occur I’d be willing to bet most network operators are going to be leaning on their interpersonal
connections rather than automation to reestablish peering with networks....

Re: Implementing Decentralized RPKI with Blockchain Technology

Hi Brandon,

That's not how blockchain works. Validation is time-bound and
irrevocable. Only the current key-holder can transfer the validated
material to another entity. Effecting such transfers requires minimal
computation, on the order of a few HTTPS transfers.

Under block chain, an RIR would not be able to revoke number
resources, not even for non-payment or fraud. And if the keys
associated with an address block were lost or stolen,...

For what it's worth, this is quite implementation specific and leaves a lot of room for intentional and appropriate
design decisions. Custom smart contract (think "decentralized program") code could be used to enable the functionality
desired for an RIR, without other functionality.
Let's extrapolate: An RIR could use smart contracts with immutable code to allow an entity to register a specific block
and retain certain...

Incorrect.

If the RIR revokes the resource certificate used to sign the ROA, the ROA
is also then revoked. Validator software will then remove the VRPs that had
been created from that previously valid ROA. If there are no other VRPs
that cover the BGP message parameters, the validator will return NOTFOUND.

If the RIR refused to publish or deleted the ROA, validators will
eventually delete them, which also removes the VRP previously created. If...

Not really. If it's technically feasible to override or roll back
transactions, you've violated one of the central tenets of block
chain. You can design a system that allows transactions to be rolled
back or changed by a central authority but the result would not be a
block chain and would not have the desired characteristic of
resistance against government compulsion.

transactions, you've violated one of the central tenets of block

To be clear, I did not state such. Ownership can be transferred by smart contract. This does not violate a core tenet
of blockchains and is a key feature of almost all blockchains which still exhibit signs of life.

Re: Implementing Decentralized RPKI with Blockchain Technology

If the RIR can institute a revocation via smart contract, for any
reason, then you haven't achieved any resilience against government
compulsion applied to the RIR, which was Brandon's reason for
considering blockchain in the first place.

Thanks for raising this topic. In all the rush to deploy RPKI I fear these issues are not talked
about enough.

A variant of this could make some sense, the issue is that it doesn't do you a whole lot of good to
have a local RPKI anchor that you and your local community look to if the global internet community
isn't looking at it - sure, your IPs are routable to a few of your friends, but they can't reach
Google...oops....

Tom,

Something I’ve been curious about for some time: since deployment of RPKI is (mostly) hosted by the RIRs and
ultimately, the RIRs control the validation chain, what would happen if the RIR creates (or, if you prefer, is directed
by court order to create) INVALIDs?

FX option expiries for 14 November 10am New York cut

There is just one to take note of, as highlighted in bold. But dollar domination is the name of the game now, so just be wary that the expiries aren't going to matter all too much.

The one highlighted is for EUR/USD at the 1.0550 level. However, it isn't one that holds any technical significance now that the pair has broken below the April low of 1.0601. The 1.0500 mark is next on the cards with the October 2023 lows beckoning below that closer to 1.0450.

The monthly chart for the pair highlights how we've been in a range between roughly 1.0500 to 1.1200 since the start of 2023. So, there is some key technical focus towards the downside support there and that's the more important level to pay attention to with the dollar continuing to push upwards.

For more information on how to use this data, you may refer to this post here.

Another light calendar day beckons in Europe today

The US CPI report yesterday here provided some reason for a push and pull in markets but ultimately, the dollar settled higher as it continues its post-election momentum. It's tough to fight that especially with dollar bulls also seeking out key technical breaks on the charts. And the greenback is once again keeping a little firmer today:

EUR/USD is holding at its lowest levels this year after the break below the April low of 1.0601 overnight. Meanwhile, USD/JPY had a brief brush against 156.00 earlier as it eyes further gains alongside an uptick in Treasury yields.

Elsewhere, GBP/USD is closing in on its August low of 1.2665 while USD/CAD is up to its highest levels since 2020 in a push above 1.4000. It's all about the dollar as it rampages on in the post-election period.

Looking to the session ahead, there isn't anything on the agenda in Europe to shake up that sentiment. All eyes will once again fall on more US data later in the day to perhaps add to the mix. Otherwise, the euphoria from Trump trades is still very much permeating across broader markets with Bitcoin also hoping to firmly clear $90,000 since yesterday.

0800 GMT - Spain October final CPI figures1000 GMT - Eurozone Q3 GDP second estimate1000 GMT - Eurozone September industrial production

That's all for the session ahead. I wish you all the best of days to come and good luck with your trading! Stay safe out there.

Chinese stocks close lower as cautious tones linger for now

And that is thanks to Beijing disappointing markets once again with a failure to live up to stimulus announcements. It was the case right after the Golden Week holiday and it was the case again on Friday last week. With the drop today, the CSI 300 index closes down by 1.7% to post its lowest close this week.

It's been a rather back and forth last few days but the feeling is that there are hints of exhaustion when it comes to Chinese equities at the moment. That especially since Beijing has not followed up on the rallying momentum prior to the Golden Week holiday.

In the bigger picture, China is a very, very attractive opportunity as valuations are cheap and price levels are low at the moment. And that provides an alluring proposition for any investor, that is if you can ride this wave out. I'm definitely keeping an eye out but I'm not entirely convinced that this is where the turning point is, especially since local authorities have not delivered in recent weeks.

The technical breakout at the end of September is a good starting point but I fear that with a lack of convincing, China stocks might slip back into old habits and slide down again in the weeks ahead. The warning signs are definitely building to say the least: It's not a pretty picture in China
