In the latest issue of the East-West Dialogue, How (and Why) the United States Should Help to Build the ASEAN Economic Community , EWC Senior Fellow Michael Plummer calls for ambitious new initiatives, leading to a U.S.-ASEAN Economic Space that would develop a framework for expanding FTAs and a U.S.-ASEAN Partnership Fund to deepen civic and cultural ties. These ideas are elaborated on in commentaries by Scot Marciel (U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN), Kishore Mahbubani (former Singaporean Ambassador to the UN), and Chalongphob Sussangkarn (former Thai Minister of Finance).

The East-West Center: A Valuable National Asset

The East-West Center is a Hawai‘i-based, federally-supported institution, long a key part of U.S. outreach to the countries of the Asia and the Pacific and a fixture in Honolulu. When a House committee recently voted to eliminate the 1960 authorizing legislation for the Center, friends and alumni were alarmed, even though few observers believe the bill has any likelihood of becoming law.

HONOLULU (April 8) – Weekly video updates about the Khmer Rouge trial proceedings currently underway in Cambodia can now be viewed online at forum.eastwestcenter.org/Khmer-Rouge-Trials .

The films – produced for a prime-time Cambodian television audience, with English subtitles added – endeavor to explain the complex legal proceedings in an accessible and informative manner through the use of trial footage, expert commentary and interviews. Also available on the “Time for Justice, Cambodia” site are written reports on the tribunal sessions prepared by legal monitors from the Asian International Justice Initiative, or AIJI .

HONOLULU (Jan. 28, 2009) – The East-West Center and an EWC alumni group have signed the agreement which establishes a new scholarship fund to assist Thai students at the Center. Interest earnings from the Royal Sala Thai Scholarship Fund will help cover travel and living expenses for qualified graduate students from Thailand studying in Hawai‘i on East-West Center grants.

Health Experts Meet at EWC on Environmental Risks in Vulnerable Communities

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 10, 2014) – At an event on Capitol Hill yesterday, the US-ASEAN Business Council and the East West Center launched a new “ASEAN Matters for America” publication and online tool that outlines the essential role ASEAN plays in American economic prosperity. Senate East Asia and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee Chairman Ben Cardin and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce spoke at the launch event, which also included a discussion panel with leaders from the Southeast Asia business, media, analysis and diplomatic communities.

East-West Center Publishes Report on Inaugural Asia Pacific Dialogue of Women20 for the G20 Process

HONOLULU (January 19, 2018) – The East-West Center in Honolulu Hawai‘i has just published a report on the findings of the inaugural Women20 for the G20 Asia Pacific Dialogue, which was held at the Center in June. The 20-page report expands on initial policy recommendations that the participants released soon after the meeting to help the G20 address several of the most pressing areas of ongoing disparity in women’s economic status throughout the Asia Pacific region and the world.
