By Bob O’Donnell, president and chief analyst of TECHnalysis Research While much of the technology world is still searching to find easily measurable productivity improvements with generative AI, it turns out there’s another tech trend that’s already driving very impressive results today: digital twins. The idea behind digital twins is to create a complete replica of a physical system in software and then use that digital copy to run simulations and other tests before building a physical implementation of the device or system in the “real world.” Software-Based Systems As you can easily imagine, the ability to create, refine, and test complex configurations of various elements in software before committing to a hardware design offers incredible benefits to a system’s designers. In addition to ensuring that a given design works as intended, a digital twin offers the opportunity to refine the entire system or any combination of individual elements. Organizations can focus on optimizing a design for the best possible performance, most efficient energy usage, or any number of other targets that a company may have for a specific product. Digital twins can also be used for testing under conditions that aren’t practical in the real world, such as crashing a car or jet engine thousands of times in thousands of different situations. In addition, one of the more intriguing new applications of GenAI is to use it to help refine this system optimization process. Appropriately trained foundation models can run through billions of permutations and help ensure that a digital twin of a given system is as good as it can be by “solving” for the best potential outcome. They can also create design performance levels that existing methodologies don’t even begin to meet. The real trick in getting this all to work is finding the right software solution to build the digital twin. Not surprisingly, the type of device being “modeled” in digital form impacts this decision, but one of the most important overarching demands is the ability for a tool to faithfully replicate in software how individual elements behave in the real world, both on their own and in combination with other elements. It turns out that tools originally designed to digitally create some of the most complex and sophisticated devices that humankind has ever conceived—the semiconductor chips powering today’s digital devices—are extremely well suited to this digital system emulation task. Why Cadence? That’s why a company like Cadence, which was founded to create and is best known for its EDA (electronic design automation) chip design software, has become an important force in the world of digital twins. In solving the technical challenges associated with the chip design process, Cadence created software capabilities that can be applied to building an enormous range of sophisticated systems, including jet and automobile engines, manufacturing equipment, computing systems, and much more. Much of the work is focused on what the company refers to as computational software—that is, software that can solve the immensely complex physical and computational problems that underly and mathematically “describe” how the different elements in a system function on their own and in combination with other elements. It is these capabilities that allow Cadence software tools such as Allegro X Design Platform and Clarity 3D Solver to accurately emulate in software the real-world functionality and performance of systems that integrate various components. In the case of systems like jet engines that need to function well in volatile real-world environments, companies can use Cadence’s Fidelity CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Platform . This allows designers to see how their designs operate in different types of weather, at different altitudes, in dangerous conditions that can’t be replicated in the real world, and much more—again, all before committing to an expensive hardware prototype. Of course, the EDA tools that Cadence is best known for—like Virtuoso Studio and Xcelium Logic Simulator —allow these capabilities to be brought to individual semiconductor chip designs. Before they go into production, all the world’s biggest chip companies use Cadence tools to create, refine, and digitally test their latest generation chips. With the move to chiplet architectures that bundle together multiple individual chips into larger, more sophisticated SoCs (system on chips) in 3D packages, Cadence has a tool called Integrity 3D-IC Platform for creating chiplet designs. Once it comes time to create customized chips for some of these applications, Cadence also offers hardware platforms such as Palladium Emulation and Protium Enterprise Prototyping that organizations can use to prototype and validate their designs before they commit to manufacturing. On top of that, many companies then use other Cadence tools like the aforementioned Allegro X Design Platform to link together multiple independent chips and other elements into a computing system design. Building even further, Cadence has recently released a set of tools called Cadence Reality Digital Twin Platform for modeling the performance, power consumption levels, and operation of data centers that integrate thousands of different computer systems. Given the enormous power demands that today’s GPU-rich cloud and enterprise data centers have, the ability to optimize the overall data center design for more power efficiency is an absolutely essential need. Biological Systems What’s fascinating is that these system-level design capabilities extend beyond the world of hardware into fields like biology and drug discovery as well. In fact, Cadence’s 2022 acquisition of OpenEye and the new product efforts associated with it are centered around modeling how complex biological systems will react to newly created drugs. In this case, Cadence tools such as Orion Molecular Design Platform essentially create digital twins of various types of human cells and then model how various molecules from a new type of drug will interact with those cells. Using these types of technologies, companies can rapidly expand the range of different molecules that they test in the digital domain without going through the very difficult and time-consuming task of creating and testing physical samples of these new molecules. While the work is still in its early phases, the potential of combining this technology with appropriately trained GenAI models could lead to significantly faster drug discovery efforts. Given the computational power now available to us—thanks in no small part to the impact that EDA tools like the ones from Cadence have had over the last several decades—the ability to emulate complex systems completely in software through the process of digital twinning has never been more compelling. From designing individual ICs (integrated circuits), through compute systems, and even into areas like computational fluid dynamics and drug discovery, the possibilities that digital twins—and the tools that create them—have enabled offer the potential to dramatically impact industries of all types and sizes. It’s going to be exciting to see how their impact continues to grow. Residents of India’s capital New Delhi choked in a blanketing toxic smog Wednesday as worsening air pollution surged past 50 times the World Health Organisation’s recommended daily maximum.

Many in the city cannot afford air filters, nor do they have homes they can effectively seal from the misery of foul-smelling air blamed for thousands of premature deaths.

Cooler temperatures and slow-moving winds trap deadly pollutants each winter, stretching from mid-October until at least January.

At dawn on Wednesday, “hazardous” pollutant levels in parts of the sprawling urban area of more than 30 million people topped 806 micrograms per cubic metre, according to monitoring firm IQAir.

That is more than 53 times the WHO-recommended daily maximum of fine particulate matter — dangerous cancer-causing microparticles known as PM2.5 pollutants that enter the bloodstream through the lungs.

By midday, when air usually is at its best, it eased to about 25-35 times above danger levels, depending on different districts.

The city is blanketed in acrid smog each year, primarily blamed on stubble burning by farmers in neighbouring regions to clear their fields for ploughing, as well as factories and traffic fumes.

‘Alarming’

But a report by The New York Times this month, based on air and soil samples it collected over five years, revealed the dangerous fumes also spewing from a power plant incinerating the city’s landfill garbage mountains.

Experts the newspaper spoke to said that the levels of heavy metals found were “alarming”.

Swirling white clouds of smog also delayed several flights across northern India.

The India Meteorological Department said that at least 18 regional airports had a visibility lower than 1,000 metres (1,093 yards) — dropping below 500m in Delhi.

India’s Supreme Court last month ruled that clean air was a fundamental human right, ordering both the central government and state-level authorities to take action.

But critics say arguments between rival politicians heading neighbouring states — as well as between central and state-level authorities — have compounded the problem.

Politicians are accused of not wanting to anger key figures in their constituencies, particularly powerful farming groups.

City authorities have launched several initiatives to tackle pollution, which have done little in practice.

Government trucks are regularly used to spray water to briefly dampen the pollution.

A new scheme unveiled earlier this month to use three small drones to spray water mist was derided by critics as another “band-aid” solution to a public health crisis.

The WHO says that air pollution can trigger strokes, heart disease, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.

It is particularly punishing for babies, children and the elderly.

A study in The Lancet medical journal attributed 1.67m premature deaths to air pollution in the world’s most populous country in 2019.

After his success with Messiah in 1742 A.D. he never performed an Italian opera again. Handel was only partly successful with his performances of English Oratorio on mythical or biblical themes, but when he arranged a performance of Messiah to benefit the Foundling Hospital (1750) the critique ended. The pathos of Handel's oratorio is an ethical one, they are hallowed not by liturgical dignity but by the moral ideals of humanity. Almost blind, and having lived in England for almost fifty years, he died a respected and rich man. -- Handel is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time, not only because of his Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks. But since the late 1960s, with the revival of baroque music and original instrument interest in Handel's opera seria has revived too. Handel composed forty operas in about thirty years; some are considered as masterpieces, with many sweeping arias and much admired improvisations. His operas contain remarkable human characterization, by a composer not known for his love affairs. -- Messiah: (HWV 56) is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer (which are worded slightly differently than their King James counterparts). It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742, and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.

Thomas is held in the Catholic Church to be the model teacher for those studying for the priesthood. The works for which he is best-known are the Summa Theologica and the Summa Contra Gentiles. As one of the 33 Doctors of the Church, he is considered the Church's greatest theologian and philosopher. Pope Benedict XV declared: "This (Dominican) Order ... acquired new luster when the Church declared the teaching of Thomas to be her own and that Doctor, honored with the special praises of the Pontiffs, the master and patron of Catholic schools."

Wars with the Moors [Muslims]: The conquest of Italy brought Charlemagne in contact with the Saracens who, at the time, controlled the Mediterranean. Pippin, his son, was much occupied with Saracens in Italy. Charlemagne conquered Corsica and Sardinia at an unknown date and in 799 the Balearic Islands. The islands were often attacked by Saracen pirates, but the counts of Genoa and Tuscany (Boniface) kept them at bay with large fleets until the end of Charlemagne's reign. Charlemagne even had contact with the caliphal court in Baghdad. In 797 (or possibly 801), the caliph of Baghdad, Harun al-Rashid, presented Charlemagne with an Asian elephant named Abul-Abbas and a clock. -- In Hispania [Spain], the struggle against the Moors continued unabated throughout the latter half of his reign. His son Louis was in charge of the Spanish border. In 785, his men captured Gerona permanently and extended Frankish control into the Catalan littoral for the duration of Charlemagne's reign (and much longer, it remained nominally Frankish until the Treaty of Corbeil in 1258). The Muslim chiefs in the northeast of Islamic Spain were constantly revolting against Córdoban authority, and they often turned to the Franks for help. The Frankish border was slowly extended until 795, when Gerona, Cardona, Ausona, and Urgel were united into the new Spanish March, within the old duchy of Septimania. -- In 797 Barcelona, the greatest city of the region, fell to the Franks when Zeid, its governor, rebelled against Córdoba and, failing, handed it to them. The Umayyad authority recaptured it in 799. However, Louis of Aquitaine marched the entire army of his kingdom over the Pyrenees and besieged it for two years, wintering there from 800 to 801, when it capitulated. The Franks continued to press forward against the emir. They took Tarragona in 809 and Tortosa in 811. The last conquest brought them to the mouth of the Ebro and gave them raiding access to Valencia, prompting the Emir al-Hakam I to recognize their conquests in 812 A.D.

Papal authority: Decree of Valentinian - Leo was a significant contributor to the centralisation of spiritual authority within the Church and in reaffirming papal authority. While the bishop of Rome had always been viewed as the chief patriarch in the Western church, much of the pope's authority was delegated to local diocesan bishops. Not without serious opposition did he succeed in reasserting his authority in Gaul. Patroclus of Arles (d. 426) had received from Pope Zosimus the recognition of a subordinate primacy over the Gallican Church which was strongly asserted by his successor Hilary of Arles. An appeal from Chelidonius of Besançon gave Leo the opportunity to reassert the pope's authority over Hilary, who defended himself stoutly at Rome, refusing to recognize Leo's judicial status. Feeling that the primatial rights of the bishop of Rome were threatened, Leo appealed to the civil power for support, and obtained from Valentinian III the famous decree of June 6, 445, which recognized the primacy of the bishop of Rome based on the merits of Peter, the dignity of the city, and the Nicene Creed (in their interpolated form); ordained that any opposition to his rulings, which were to have the force of ecclesiastical law, should be treated as treason; and provided for the forcible extradition by provincial governors of anyone who refused to answer a summons to Rome. Faced with this decree, Hilary submitted to the pope, although under his successor, Ravennius, Leo divided the metropolitan rights between Arles and Vienne (450). -- Dispute with Dioscorus of Alexandria: In 445, Leo disputed with Pope Dioscorus, St. Cyril's successor as Pope of Alexandria, insisting that the ecclesiastical practice of his see should follow that of Rome on the basis that Mark the Evangelist, the disciple of Saint Peter and founder of the Alexandrian Church, could have had no other tradition than that of the prince of the apostles. This, of course, was not the position of the Copts, who saw the ancient patriarchates as equals. -- Council of Chalcedon: A favorable occasion for extending the authority of Rome in the East was offered in the renewal of the Christological controversy by Eutyches, who in the beginning of the conflict appealed to Leo and took refuge with him on his condemnation by Flavian. But on receiving full information from Flavian, Leo took his side decisively. In 451 at the Council of Chalcedon, after Leo's Tome on the two natures of Christ was read out, the bishops participating in the Council cried out: "This is the faith of the fathers ... Peter has spoken thus through Leo ..." -- Battling heresies: An uncompromising foe of heresy, Leo found that in the diocese of Aquileia, Pelagians were received into church communion without formal repudiation of their errors; he wrote to rebuke them, making accusations of culpable negligence, and required a solemn abjuration before a synod. Manicheans fleeing before the Vandals had come to Rome in 439 and secretly organized there; Leo learned of this around 443, and proceeded against them by holding a public debate with their representatives, burning their books, and warning the Roman Christians against them. Nor was his attitude less decided against the Priscillianists. Bishop Turrubius of Astorga, astonished at the spread of this sect in Spain, had addressed the other Spanish bishops on the subject, sending a copy of his letter to Leo, who took the opportunity to exercise Roman policy in Spain. He wrote an extended treatise (21 July 447), against the sect, examining its false teaching in detail, and calling for a Spanish general council to investigate whether it had any adherents in the episcopate, but this was prevented by the political circumstances of Spain. -- On Dignity and Equality: In his Nativitate Domini, in the Christmas Day sermon "Christian, Remember your Dignity" Leo appears to articulate a fundamental and inclusive human dignity and equality: The saint, the sinner, and the unbeliever are all equal as sinners, and none is excluded in the call to "happiness": "Our Saviour, dearly-beloved, was born today: let us be glad. For there is no proper place for sadness, when we keep the birthday of the Life, which destroys the fear of mortality and brings to us the joy of promised eternity. No one is kept from sharing in this happiness. There is for all one common measure of joy, because as our Lord the destroyer of sin and death finds none free from charge, so is He come to free us all. Let the saint exult in that he draws near to victory. Let the sinner be glad in that he is invited to pardon. Let the gentile take courage in that he is called to life."

Such councils include the **Council of Jerusalem (50 AD) [Acts 15:6], the Council of Rome (155 AD), the Second Council of Rome (193 AD), the Council of Ephesus (193 AD), the Council of Carthage (251 AD), the Council of Iconium (258 AD), the **Council of Antioch (264 AD), the Councils of Arabia (246-247 AD), the Council of Elvira (306 AD), the Council of Carthage (311 AD), the Synod of Neo-Caesarea (314 AD), the Council of Ancyra (314 AD) and the Council of Arles (314 AD). -- and later the **Council in Nicaea, Bithynia (Turkey) in 325 A.D.
