gis L-Logistic regression models: Prior sensitivity analysis, robustness to outliers and applications By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 10 Jun 2019 04:04 EDT Rosineide F. da Paz, Narayanaswamy Balakrishnan, Jorge Luis Bazán. Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 33, Number 3, 455--479.Abstract: Tadikamalla and Johnson [ Biometrika 69 (1982) 461–465] developed the $L_{B}$ distribution to variables with bounded support by considering a transformation of the standard Logistic distribution. In this manuscript, a convenient parametrization of this distribution is proposed in order to develop regression models. This distribution, referred to here as L-Logistic distribution, provides great flexibility and includes the uniform distribution as a particular case. Several properties of this distribution are studied, and a Bayesian approach is adopted for the parameter estimation. Simulation studies, considering prior sensitivity analysis, recovery of parameters and comparison of algorithms, and robustness to outliers are all discussed showing that the results are insensitive to the choice of priors, efficiency of the algorithm MCMC adopted, and robustness of the model when compared with the beta distribution. Applications to estimate the vulnerability to poverty and to explain the anxiety are performed. The results to applications show that the L-Logistic regression models provide a better fit than the corresponding beta regression models. Full Article
gis Excess registered deaths in England and Wales during the COVID-19 pandemic, March 2020 and April 2020. (arXiv:2004.11355v4 [stat.AP] UPDATED) By arxiv.org Published On :: Official counts of COVID-19 deaths have been criticized for potentially including people who did not die of COVID-19 but merely died with COVID-19. I address that critique by fitting a generalized additive model to weekly counts of all registered deaths in England and Wales during the 2010s. The model produces baseline rates of death registrations expected in the absence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and comparing those baselines to recent counts of registered deaths exposes the emergence of excess deaths late in March 2020. Among adults aged 45+, about 38,700 excess deaths were registered in the 5 weeks comprising 21 March through 24 April (612 $pm$ 416 from 21$-$27 March, 5675 $pm$ 439 from 28 March through 3 April, then 9183 $pm$ 468, 12,712 $pm$ 589, and 10,511 $pm$ 567 in April's next 3 weeks). Both the Office for National Statistics's respective count of 26,891 death certificates which mention COVID-19, and the Department of Health and Social Care's hospital-focused count of 21,222 deaths, are appreciably less, implying that their counting methods have underestimated rather than overestimated the pandemic's true death toll. If underreporting rates have held steady, about 45,900 direct and indirect COVID-19 deaths might have been registered by April's end but not yet publicly reported in full. Full Article
gis The phase transition for the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in high-dimensional logistic regression By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 17 Feb 2020 04:02 EST Emmanuel J. Candès, Pragya Sur. Source: The Annals of Statistics, Volume 48, Number 1, 27--42.Abstract: This paper rigorously establishes that the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) in high-dimensional logistic regression models with Gaussian covariates undergoes a sharp “phase transition.” We introduce an explicit boundary curve $h_{mathrm{MLE}}$, parameterized by two scalars measuring the overall magnitude of the unknown sequence of regression coefficients, with the following property: in the limit of large sample sizes $n$ and number of features $p$ proportioned in such a way that $p/n ightarrow kappa $, we show that if the problem is sufficiently high dimensional in the sense that $kappa >h_{mathrm{MLE}}$, then the MLE does not exist with probability one. Conversely, if $kappa <h_{mathrm{MLE}}$, the MLE asymptotically exists with probability one. Full Article
gis registry By looselycoupled.com Published On :: 2005-02-01T19:00:00-00:00 Recognized service directory. A registry stores information about services in an SOA. At a minimum, the registry includes information that other participants can look up to find out the location of the service and what it does (the UDDI specification defines a web services standard for this functionality). A registry may also include information about policies that are applied to the service, such as security requirements, quality of service commitments and billing. Some registries are extended with document repositories, providing more detailed information about the operation and constraints of the service that may be useful to developers, administrators or users. gis New formulation of the logistic-Gaussian process to analyze trajectory tracking data By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Wed, 27 Nov 2019 22:01 EST Gianluca Mastrantonio, Clara Grazian, Sara Mancinelli, Enrico Bibbona. Source: The Annals of Applied Statistics, Volume 13, Number 4, 2483--2508.Abstract: Improved communication systems, shrinking battery sizes and the price drop of tracking devices have led to an increasing availability of trajectory tracking data. These data are often analyzed to understand animal behavior. In this work, we propose a new model for interpreting the animal movent as a mixture of characteristic patterns, that we interpret as different behaviors. The probability that the animal is behaving according to a specific pattern, at each time instant, is nonparametrically estimated using the Logistic-Gaussian process. Owing to a new formalization and the way we specify the coregionalization matrix of the associated multivariate Gaussian process, our model is invariant with respect to the choice of the reference element and of the ordering of the probability vector components. We fit the model under a Bayesian framework, and show that the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm we propose is straightforward to implement. We perform a simulation study with the aim of showing the ability of the estimation procedure to retrieve the model parameters. We also test the performance of the information criterion we used to select the number of behaviors. The model is then applied to a real dataset where a wolf has been observed before and after procreation. The results are easy to interpret, and clear differences emerge in the two phases. gis Conditionally Conjugate Mean-Field Variational Bayes for Logistic Models By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Fri, 11 Oct 2019 04:03 EDT Daniele Durante, Tommaso Rigon. Source: Statistical Science, Volume 34, Number 3, 472--485.Abstract: Variational Bayes (VB) is a common strategy for approximate Bayesian inference, but simple methods are only available for specific classes of models including, in particular, representations having conditionally conjugate constructions within an exponential family. Models with logit components are an apparently notable exception to this class, due to the absence of conjugacy among the logistic likelihood and the Gaussian priors for the coefficients in the linear predictor. To facilitate approximate inference within this widely used class of models, Jaakkola and Jordan ( Stat. Comput. 10 (2000) 25–37) proposed a simple variational approach which relies on a family of tangent quadratic lower bounds of the logistic log-likelihood, thus restoring conjugacy between these approximate bounds and the Gaussian priors. This strategy is still implemented successfully, but few attempts have been made to formally understand the reasons underlying its excellent performance. Following a review on VB for logistic models, we cover this gap by providing a formal connection between the above bound and a recent Pólya-gamma data augmentation for logistic regression. Such a result places the computational methods associated with the aforementioned bounds within the framework of variational inference for conditionally conjugate exponential family models, thereby allowing recent advances for this class to be inherited also by the methods relying on Jaakkola and Jordan ( Stat. Comput. 10 (2000) 25–37). Full Article
