Recently, in Lesieur et al. (Barbier, Krzakala, Macris, Miolane and Zdeborová (2017)), it was proved that there exists a critical threshold $eta_{p}$ so that when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds $eta_{p}$, one can distinguish the spiked and unspiked tensors and weakly recover the prior via the minimal mean-square-error method. On the other side, Perry, Wein and Bandeira (Perry, Wein and Bandeira (2017)) proved that there exists a $eta_{p}'<eta_{p}$ such that any statistical hypothesis test cannot distinguish these two tensors, in the sense that their total variation distance asymptotically vanishes, when the signa-to-noise ratio is less than $eta_{p}'$. In this work, we show that $eta_{p}$ is indeed the critical threshold that strictly separates the distinguishability and indistinguishability between the two tensors under the total variation distance. Our approach is based on a subtle analysis of the high temperature behavior of the pure $p$-spin model with Ising spin, arising initially from the field of spin glasses. In particular, we identify the signal-to-noise criticality $eta_{p}$ as the critical temperature, distinguishing the high and low temperature behavior, of the Ising pure $p$-spin mean-field spin glass model. Our second goal is to contrast empirical-Bayes and fully Bayesian approaches to variable selection through examples, theoretical results and simulations. Considerable differences between the two approaches are found. In particular, we prove a theorem that characterizes a surprising aymptotic discrepancy between fully Bayes and empirical Bayes. This discrepancy arises from a different source than the failure to account for hyperparameter uncertainty in the empirical-Bayes estimate. Here, we consider prior knowledge of a hierarchical overlapping group structure to improve variable selection in regression setting. In genomics applications, for instance, a biological pathway contains tens to hundreds of genes and a gene can be mapped to multiple experimentally measured features (such as its mRNA expression, copy number variation and methylation levels of possibly multiple sites). In addition to the hierarchical structure, the groups at the same level may overlap (e.g., two pathways can share common genes). Incorporating such hierarchical overlapping groups in traditional penalized regression setting remains a difficult optimization problem. Alternatively, we propose a Bayesian indicator model that can elegantly serve the purpose. We evaluate the model in simulations and two breast cancer examples, and demonstrate its superior performance over existing models. The result not only enhances prediction accuracy but also improves variable selection and model interpretation that lead to deeper biological insight of the disease. Full Article

In the functional domain, seasonal phase variations are separated from level amplitude changes in a warping process with the Fisher–Rao distance metric, and the aligned (season-adjusted) electricity price curves are modeled in the functional autoregression framework. In a real application, the WFAR model provides superior out-of-sample forecast accuracy in both a normal functioning market, Nord Pool, and an extreme situation, the California market. In many classical models this only captures the location of the distribution but over the last decade there has been increasing interest in distributional regression approaches modeling all parameters including location, scale and shape. Notably, so-called nonhomogeneous Gaussian regression (NGR) models both mean and variance of a Gaussian response and is particularly popular in weather forecasting. Moreover, generalized additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) provide a framework where each distribution parameter is modeled separately capturing smooth linear or nonlinear effects. However, when variable selection is required and/or there are nonsmooth dependencies or interactions (especially unknown or of high-order), it is challenging to establish a good GAMLSS. A natural alternative in these situations would be the application of regression trees or random forests but, so far, no general distributional framework is available for these. Therefore, a framework for distributional regression trees and forests is proposed that blends regression trees and random forests with classical distributions from the GAMLSS framework as well as their censored or truncated counterparts. To illustrate these novel approaches in practice, they are employed to obtain probabilistic precipitation forecasts at numerous sites in a mountainous region (Tyrol, Austria) based on a large number of numerical weather prediction quantities. It is shown that the novel distributional regression forests automatically select variables and interactions, performing on par or often even better than GAMLSS specified either through prior meteorological knowledge or a computationally more demanding boosting approach. To enable in-process control of nanocrystal production, this technology innovation hinges upon a solution addressing a statistical problem, which is the capability of online tracking a dynamic, time-varying probability distribution reflecting the nanocrystal growth. Because no known parametric density functions can adequately describe the evolving distribution, a nonparametric approach is inevitable. Towards this objective, we propose to incorporate the dynamic evolution of the normalized particle size distribution into a state space model, in which the density function is represented by a linear combination of B-splines and the spline coefficients are treated as states. The closed-form algorithm runs online updates faster than the frame rate of the in situ TEM video, making it suitable for in-process control purpose. Imposing the constraints of curve smoothness and temporal continuity improves the accuracy and robustness while tracking the probability distribution. We test our method on three published TEM videos. For all of them, the proposed method is able to outperform several alternative approaches. Full Article

Secondly, we investigate the concentration of measure phenomenon (particularly of higher order) for these spin systems. We show the effect of better concentration properties by centering not around the mean, but around a stochastic term in the exponential random graph model. From there, one can deduce a central limit theorem for the number of triangles from the CLT of the edge count. The model links all cell probabilities, collected in a $p imes n$ matrix $Pi$, via the assumption that $Pi$ can be factorized as the product of two nonnegative matrices $Ain[0,1]^{p imes K}$ and $Win[0,1]^{K imes n}$. Topic models have been originally developed in text mining, when one browses through $n$ documents, based on a dictionary of $p$ words, and covering $K$ topics. In this terminology, the matrix $A$ is called the word-topic matrix, and is the main target of estimation. It can be viewed as a matrix of conditional probabilities, and it is uniquely defined, under appropriate separability assumptions, discussed in detail in this work. Notably, the unique $A$ is required to satisfy what is commonly known as the anchor word assumption, under which $A$ has an unknown number of rows respectively proportional to the canonical basis vectors in $mathbb{R}^{K}$. The indices of such rows are referred to as anchor words. Recent computationally feasible algorithms, with theoretical guarantees, utilize constructively this assumption by linking the estimation of the set of anchor words with that of estimating the $K$ vertices of a simplex. This crucial step in the estimation of $A$ requires $K$ to be known, and cannot be easily extended to the more realistic set-up when $K$ is unknown. This work takes a different view on anchor word estimation, and on the estimation of $A$. We propose a new method of estimation in topic models, that is not a variation on the existing simplex finding algorithms, and that estimates $K$ from the observed data. We derive new finite sample minimax lower bounds for the estimation of $A$, as well as new upper bounds for our proposed estimator. We describe the scenarios where our estimator is minimax adaptive. Our finite sample analysis is valid for any $n,N_{i},p$ and $K$, and both $p$ and $K$ are allowed to increase with $n$, a situation not handled well by previous analyses. We complement our theoretical results with a detailed simulation study. We illustrate that the new algorithm is faster and more accurate than the current ones, although we start out with a computational and theoretical disadvantage of not knowing the correct number of topics $K$, while we provide the competing methods with the correct value in our simulations. The interaction among the dynamics of these processes depends on the weighted adjacency matrix $W$ associated to the underlying graph: indeed, the probability that an agent $j$ chooses a certain action depends on its personal “inclination” $Z_{n,j}$ and on the inclinations $Z_{n,h}$, with $h eq j$, of the other agents according to the entries of $W$. The best known example of reinforced stochastic process is the Pólya urn. The present paper focuses on the weighted empirical means $N_{n,j}=sum_{k=1}^{n}q_{n,k}X_{k,j}$, since, for example, the current experience is more important than the past one in reinforced learning. Their almost sure synchronization and some central limit theorems in the sense of stable convergence are proven. The new approach with weighted means highlights the key points in proving some recent results for the personal inclinations $Z^{j}=(Z_{n,j})_{n}$ and for the empirical means $overline{X}^{j}=(sum_{k=1}^{n}X_{k,j}/n)_{n}$ given in recent papers (e.g. Aletti, Crimaldi and Ghiglietti (2019), Ann. Appl. Probab. 27 (2017) 3787–3844, Crimaldi et al. Stochastic Process. Appl. 129 (2019) 70–101). In fact, with a more sophisticated decomposition of the considered processes, we can understand how the different convergence rates of the involved stochastic processes combine. From an application point of view, we provide confidence intervals for the common limit inclination of the agents and a test statistics to make inference on the matrix $W$, based on the weighted empirical means. The covariance or precision matrix incorporates the spatial dependence between the regions. Common choices for the precision matrix include the widely used ICAR model, which is singular, and its nonsingular extension which lacks interpretability. We propose a new parametric model for the precision matrix based on a directed acyclic graph (DAG) representation of the spatial dependence. Our model guarantees positive definiteness and, hence, in addition to being a valid prior for regional spatially correlated random effects, can also directly model the outcome from dependent data like images and networks. Theoretical results establish a link between the parameters in our model and the variance and covariances of the random effects. Simulation studies demonstrate that the improved interpretability of our model reaps benefits in terms of accurately recovering the latent spatial random effects as well as for inference on the spatial covariance parameters. Under modest spatial correlation, our model far outperforms the CAR models, while the performances are similar when the spatial correlation is strong. We also assess sensitivity to the choice of the ordering in the DAG construction using theoretical and empirical results which testify to the robustness of our model. Existing approaches for dimension reduction and penalization are generally aimed at predicting the outcome, and are less suited for estimation of causal effects. Under standard penalization approaches (e.g. Lasso), if a variable $X_{j}$ is strongly associated with the treatment $T$ but weakly with the outcome $Y$ , the coefficient $eta_{j}$ will be shrunk towards zero thus leading to confounding bias. Under the assumption of a linear model for the outcome and sparsity, we propose continuous spike and slab priors on the regression coefficients $eta_{j}$ corresponding to the potential confounders $X_{j}$ . Specifically, we introduce a prior distribution that does not heavily shrink to zero the coefficients ( $eta_{j}$ s) of the $X_{j}$ s that are strongly associated with $T$ but weakly associated with $Y$ . We compare our proposed approach to several state of the art methods proposed in the literature. Our proposed approach has the following features: 1) it reduces confounding bias in high dimensional settings; 2) it shrinks towards zero coefficients of instrumental variables; and 3) it achieves good coverages even in small sample sizes. We apply our approach to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to estimate the causal effects of persistent pesticide exposure on triglyceride levels. Full Article

In this manuscript, we consider the monitoring of pneumonia and influenza (P&I) mortality, to detect influenza outbreaks in the continental United States, and propose a Bayesian nonparametric model selection approach to take into account the spatio-temporal dependence of outbreaks. More specifically, we introduce a zero-inflated conditionally identically distributed species sampling prior which allows borrowing information across time and to assign data to clusters associated to either a null or an alternate process. Spatial dependences are accounted for by means of a Markov random field prior, which allows to inform the selection based on inferences conducted at nearby locations. We show how the proposed modeling framework performs in an application to the P&I mortality data and in a simulation study, and compare with common threshold methods for detecting outbreaks over time, with more recent Markov switching based models, and with spike-and-slab Bayesian nonparametric priors that do not take into account spatio-temporal dependence. Source: Statistical Science, Volume 34, Number 1, 156--168.Abstract: Petrus (Piet) Groeneboom was born in Scheveningen in 1941 and grew up in Voorburg. Both villages are located near The Hague in The Netherlands; Scheveningen actually being part of The Hague. He attended the gymnasium of the Huygens lyceum. In 1959, he entered the University of Amsterdam, where he studied psychology. After his “candidate” exam (comparable to BSc) in 1963, he worked at the psychological laboratory of the University of Amsterdam until 1966. In 1965, he took up mathematics as a part-time study. After having obtained his master’s degree in 1971, he had a position at the psychological laboratory again until 1973, when he was appointed to the Mathematical Center in Amsterdam. There, he wrote between 1975 and 1979 his Ph.D. thesis with Kobus Oosterhoff as advisor, graduating in 1979. After a period of two years as visiting professor at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Piet moved back to the Mathematical Center until he was appointed full professor of statistics at the University of Amsterdam in 1984. Four years later, he moved to Delft University of Technology where he became professor of statistics and stayed until his retirement in 2006. Between 2000 and 2006 he also held a part-time professorship at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. From 1999 till 2013 he was Affiliate Professor at the statistics department of UW, Seattle. Apart from being visiting professor at the UW in Seattle, he was also visiting professor at Stanford University, Université Paris 6 and ETH Zürich. Piet is well known for his work on shape constrained statistical inference. He worked on asymptotic theory for these problems, created algorithms to compute nonparametric estimates in such models and applied these models to real data. He also worked on interacting particle systems, extreme value analysis and efficiency theory for testing procedures. Piet (co-)authored four books and 64 papers and served as promotor of 13 students. He is the recipient of the 1985 Rollo Davidson prize, a fellow of the IMS and elected member of the ISI. In 2015, he delivered the Wald lecture at the Joint Statistical Meeting in Montreal. Piet and his wife Marijke live in Naarden. He has two sons, Thomas and Tim, and (since June 12, 2018) one grandson, Tarik.
