Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FA) are commonly used as complementary treatments in pediatric psychiatric disorders, including Tourette’s disorder (TD), and are well known to have anti-inflammatory properties. However, no studies to date have examined the effects of O3FA on pediatric TD.

This is the first double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of O3FA in pediatric TD. The results indicate that O3FA supplementation may be beneficial in the reduction of tic-related impairment for some children and adolescents with TD, but not tics per se. (Read the full article)

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disabling illness. Some children with chronic disabling fatigue are housebound. Some primary care physicians find making the diagnosis of CFS difficult.

Chronic disabling fatigue is more common in 13-year-olds than previously realized with a population prevalence of ~2.0%. Chronic disabling fatigue in teenagers is more common in those with higher levels of early family adversity. (Read the full article)

Cholestasis predisposes to the development of fat-soluble vitamin (FSV) deficiency. D-α tocopheryl polyethylene glycol-1000 succinate and coadministered FSVs are absorbed in spite of cholestasis.

Infants with biliary atresia with total bilirubin >2 mg/dL are at risk for fat-soluble vitamin (FSV) deficiency. A multivitamin preparation containing d-α tocopheryl polyethylene glycol-1000 succinate alone is not effective in treating biochemical FSV insufficiency in cholestatic infants. Postnatal growth restriction of preterm infants is a universal problem. Early "catch-up growth" has been associated with development of metabolic syndrome. In addition, preterm infants appear to be at major risk for developing increased adiposity and insulin resistance.

The consumption of a nutrient-enriched formula after hospital discharge may be beneficial in adequate for gestational age infants both in terms of head circumference growth and fat-free mass gain. (Read the full article)

Previous studies have demonstrated that booster seat legislation decreased fatalities in children. However, these studies have not accounted for confounding factors such as other legislation and temporal trends in safety.

This study demonstrates that state booster seat laws are associated with decreased rates of fatalities and injuries in children 4 to 7 years of age in the United States, with the strongest effects in the older children. (Read the full article)

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an effective and safe treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome in children and adolescents. After 6 months, Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy in the form of FITNET led to an 8 times higher chance of recovery compared with usual care.

The positive effects of FITNET were maintained at long-term follow-up (>2.5 years).Patients following usual-care treatment achieve similar recovery rates at long-term follow-up. (Read the full article)

Because children often lack the physical strength, cognitive abilities, and fine motor skills to operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) properly, their risk of injury is greater.

During 2001–2010 in the United States, ~361 000 children aged ≤15 years were injured while riding ATVs. The decline in the injury rate during 2005–2010 might be related to the economic recession and decreased sales of new ATVs. (Read the full article)

In 2001, an estimated 10 438 children were treated in US emergency departments for nonfatal choking on food. The foods most frequently associated with pediatric fatal choking are hot dogs, seeds, nuts, candy, and certain types of fruits and vegetables.

From 2001 through 2009, an estimated annual average of 12 435 children ages 0 to 14 years were treated in US emergency departments for nonfatal choking on food; 0- to 4-year-olds accounted for 61.7% of episodes. Vaso-occlusive episodes (VOEs) are a common complication of sickle cell disease, resulting in morbidity. Magnesium is a vasodilator and has been shown to improve red blood cell hydration. Previous small studies have suggested that treatment with magnesium may decrease VOEs.

Intravenous magnesium sulfate is well tolerated in relatively high doses but had no effect on the length of stay in hospital, pain scores, or cumulative analgesia used in children admitted with painful VOEs in sickle cell disease. (Read the full article)

Parents influence their child’s overweight development through lifestyle-related parenting practices. Although broader parenting dimensions may also affect children’s BMI, reverse causality is possible and there have been calls to examine the possible impacts of fathers.

More consistent parenting prospectively predicted lower child BMI with effects equally strong for fathers and mothers. There was little evidence of child BMI influencing parenting. There is growing understanding of the detrimental effect of paternal depression on children. The transition to fatherhood is a unique time for men. Identifying which fathers are at-risk and when will inform effective methods to help men and their families.

Nonresident fathers have the highest depression symptom scores, peaking before entering fatherhood. Although resident fathers’ scores decrease preceding entry into fatherhood, there is a significant increase from 0 to 5 years of their child’s life when key parent–infant attachment occurs. Younger age has been identified as an independent risk factor for all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries. Since the mid-1980s, one-third of ATV-related deaths have involved children younger than 18 years of age.

Using national data, we found both similarities and differences between pediatric age groups in the contribution of known risk factors to ATV-related deaths. The observed differences suggest the importance of targeting injury prevention approaches to specific age ranges. (Read the full article)

Suboptimal brain development and increased risk of cognitive deficits are well documented in very low birth weight children. Supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid has been associated with positive cognitive effects.

This follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial of supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid to very low birth weight infants is the first report on both cognition and brain macrostructure measured with MRI.
