Uber Buys Autonomous Truck Company Otto

Uber also made a deal with Volvo to cooperate on self-driving cars. Self-driving cars are an existential threat to Uber if Uber doesn't develop them first. Suppose Ford makes self-driving cars viable a few years before does and rolls them out in many cities. Uber gets wiped out by Ford's ability to charge less for a ride. Uber's big competitive advantage from a large set of recruited drivers could vanish as fast as sufficiently safe autonomous vehicles can get manufactured. Sufficiently safe: that's the challenge. But autonomous vehicle makers who limit themselves to some urban markets can lower the bar for their initial roll-out by just excluding any streets and corners that are too tricky to handle. They'll lose some...

'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie garners a fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes

On Wednesday, May 1, 2019, Flayrah contributor 2cross2affliction wrote in the article 'Sonic the Hedgehog' ... the movie ... the trailer:

Fun fact: no movie directly adapted from a video game has ever scored as "fresh" on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. [...] But, a new challenger approaches! [...] The question of whether this movie is going to be any good, perhaps unfairly, has mostly already been answered by the Internet. The answer so far has been no. No. Just no. Okay, maybe Jim Carrey? But otherwise, why? Why the human teeth? Why ten times?

Whoops. Turns out Sonic the Hedgehog somehow, against the odds, is rated Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of 64% positive reviews from 175 professional opinions, as of this writing.

Marco Antoniotti: New version of HEΛP

After ELS 2020 I got some time to get back and do some hacking on Common Lisp. The first result is a new version of HEΛP that fixes some bugs and is in general much more robust on both Un*x and Windows platforms.

One outstanding issue is the reliance of the library on READ, which does cause some problems when reading pure source code.  On a next iteration I may use Eclector, which is a drop-in replacement for READ with finer control on error handling.

In any case, if you need HEΛP to document your program, just follow the link.

Marco Antoniotti: Digging CLAST

Again, after ELS 2020, I went back to double check the actual status of some of my libraries (after an embarrassing nag by Marco Heisig :) who caught me sleeping).

I updated the documentation of CLAST, and checked that its current status is ok; the only change I had to make was to conform to the latest ASDF expectations for test systems. Of course, you may find many more bugs.

CLAST is a library that produces abstract syntax trees munging Common Lisp sources. To do so, it relies on CLtL2 environments, which, as we all know, are in a sorry state in many implementations. Yet, CLAST is usable, at least for people who are ... CLAZY enough to use it.
