Former Alabama prep star Davenport transfers to Georgia

Maori Davenport, who drew national attention over an eligibility dispute during her senior year of high school, is transferring to Georgia after playing sparingly in her lone season at Rutgers. Lady Bulldogs coach Joni Taylor announced Davenport's decision Wednesday. The 6-foot-4 center from Troy, Alabama will have to sit out a season under NCAA transfer rules before she is eligible to join Georgia in 2021-22.

Abstract:
To predict time series of counts with small values and remarkable fluctuations, an available model is the $r$ states random environment process based on the negative binomial thinning operator and the geometric marginal. However, we argue that the aforementioned model may suffer from the following two drawbacks. First, under the condition of no prior information, the overdispersed property of the geometric distribution may cause the predictions fluctuate greatly. Second, because of the constraints on the model parameters, some estimated parameters are close to zero in real-data examples, which may not objectively reveal the correlation relationship. For the first drawback, an $r$ states random environment process based on the binomial thinning operator and the Poisson marginal is introduced. For the second drawback, we propose a generalized $r$ states random environment integer-valued autoregressive model based on the binomial thinning operator to model fluctuations of data. Yule–Walker and conditional maximum likelihood estimates are considered and their performances are assessed via simulation studies. Two real-data sets are conducted to illustrate the better performances of the proposed models compared with some existing models.

Averages of unlabeled networks: Geometric characterization and asymptotic behavior

Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common to see large collections of network data objects, that is, data sets in which a network is viewed as a fundamental unit of observation. As a result, there is a pressing need to develop network-based analogues of even many of the most basic tools already standard for scalar and vector data. In this paper, our focus is on averages of unlabeled, undirected networks with edge weights. Specifically, we (i) characterize a certain notion of the space of all such networks, (ii) describe key topological and geometric properties of this space relevant to doing probability and statistics thereupon, and (iii) use these properties to establish the asymptotic behavior of a generalized notion of an empirical mean under sampling from a distribution supported on this space. Our results rely on a combination of tools from geometry, probability theory and statistical shape analysis. In particular, the lack of vertex labeling necessitates working with a quotient space modding out permutations of labels. This results in a nontrivial geometry for the space of unlabeled networks, which in turn is found to have important implications on the types of probabilistic and statistical results that may be obtained and the techniques needed to obtain them.

Abstract:
The singular value matrix decomposition plays a ubiquitous role throughout statistics and related fields. Myriad applications including clustering, classification, and dimensionality reduction involve studying and exploiting the geometric structure of singular values and singular vectors. This paper provides a novel collection of technical and theoretical tools for studying the geometry of singular subspaces using the two-to-infinity norm. Motivated by preliminary deterministic Procrustes analysis, we consider a general matrix perturbation setting in which we derive a new Procrustean matrix decomposition. Together with flexible machinery developed for the two-to-infinity norm, this allows us to conduct a refined analysis of the induced perturbation geometry with respect to the underlying singular vectors even in the presence of singular value multiplicity. Our analysis yields singular vector entrywise perturbation bounds for a range of popular matrix noise models, each of which has a meaningful associated statistical inference task. In addition, we demonstrate how the two-to-infinity norm is the preferred norm in certain statistical settings. Specific applications discussed in this paper include covariance estimation, singular subspace recovery, and multiple graph inference. Both our Procrustean matrix decomposition and the technical machinery developed for the two-to-infinity norm may be of independent interest.

Abstract:
We provide a geometric interpretation to Bayesian inference that allows us to introduce a natural measure of the level of agreement between priors, likelihoods, and posteriors. The starting point for the construction of our geometry is the observation that the marginal likelihood can be regarded as an inner product between the prior and the likelihood. A key concept in our geometry is that of compatibility, a measure which is based on the same construction principles as Pearson correlation, but which can be used to assess how much the prior agrees with the likelihood, to gauge the sensitivity of the posterior to the prior, and to quantify the coherency of the opinions of two experts. Estimators for all the quantities involved in our geometric setup are discussed, which can be directly computed from the posterior simulation output. Some examples are used to illustrate our methods, including data related to on-the-job drug usage, midge wing length, and prostate cancer.

Alleviating Spatial Confounding for Areal Data Problems by Displacing the Geographical Centroids

Abstract:
Spatial confounding between the spatial random effects and fixed effects covariates has been recently discovered and showed that it may bring misleading interpretation to the model results. Techniques to alleviate this problem are based on decomposing the spatial random effect and fitting a restricted spatial regression. In this paper, we propose a different approach: a transformation of the geographic space to ensure that the unobserved spatial random effect added to the regression is orthogonal to the fixed effects covariates. Our approach, named SPOCK, has the additional benefit of providing a fast and simple computational method to estimate the parameters. Also, it does not constrain the distribution class assumed for the spatial error term. A simulation study and real data analyses are presented to better understand the advantages of the new method in comparison with the existing ones.

The Geometry of Continuous Latent Space Models for Network Data

Abstract:
We review the class of continuous latent space (statistical) models for network data, paying particular attention to the role of the geometry of the latent space. In these models, the presence/absence of network dyadic ties are assumed to be conditionally independent given the dyads’ unobserved positions in a latent space. In this way, these models provide a probabilistic framework for embedding network nodes in a continuous space equipped with a geometry that facilitates the description of dependence between random dyadic ties. Specifically, these models naturally capture homophilous tendencies and triadic clustering, among other common properties of observed networks. In addition to reviewing the literature on continuous latent space models from a geometric perspective, we highlight the important role the geometry of the latent space plays on properties of networks arising from these models via intuition and simulation. Finally, we discuss results from spectral graph theory that allow us to explore the role of the geometry of the latent space, independent of network size. We conclude with conjectures about how these results might be used to infer the appropriate latent space geometry from observed networks.

Clostridium difficile Infection Among Children Across Diverse US Geographic Locations

Little is known about the epidemiology and pathogenicity of Clostridium difficile infection among children, particularly those aged ≤3 years in whom colonization is common and pathogenicity uncertain.

Young children, 1 to 3 years of age, had the highest Clostridium difficile infection incidence. Considering that clinical presentation, outcomes, and disease severity were similar across age groups, C difficile infection in the youngest age group likely represents true disease and not asymptomatic colonization. Live Vaccine Use and Safety in DiGeorge Syndrome

Individuals with DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) have varying degrees of immunodeficiency. All are susceptible to vaccine-preventable infections with serious complications. Although live vaccines are generally contraindicated in this population, limited evidence suggests that they may be effective and safe for select individuals.

Many individuals with DGS received live vaccines despite having a known diagnosis. Adverse events following live immunizations were typically minor and self-limited, suggesting that live vaccines may be considered for patients with DGS who exhibit mild-to-moderate immunosuppression. Small Geographic Area Variations in Prescription Drug Use

Prescribing patterns in the US pediatric population are changing but not uniformly. A detailed examination of prescription variation is needed to better understand pharmacotherapy of children and to inform future exploration of the causes and consequences of diverse practices.

We examine pediatric pharmacotherapy and quantify payer type differences and small geographic area variation. Substantial payer-type differences and regional variations were found, likely reflecting local practice cultures. We found that underimmunization and vaccine refusal cluster geographically. Spatial scan analysis may be a useful tool to identify locations where clinicians may face challenges to achieving benchmarks for immunization coverage and that deserve special focus for interventions.
