California Court of Appeal Thwarts Efforts to Conceal Important Driving History Information from Employers

Employers with operations in California are all too familiar with how state and local officials continue to restrict the access employers have to public records, including criminal history information.1 For example, lengthy delays in completing standard criminal background checks are now routine in California.2 Apart from criminal background checks, many employers rely on motor vehicle record checks (MVRs) to vet candidates for positions that require driving as part of the job.  In Doe v. California Dept.

World’s first non-cellular 5G technology, ETSI DECT-2020, gets ITU-R approval, setting example of new era connectivity

World’s first non-cellular 5G technology, ETSI DECT-2020, gets ITU-R approval, setting example of new era connectivity

    Sophia Antipolis, 19 October 2021

ETSI DECT-2020 NR, the world’s first non-cellular 5G technology standard, has been recognized by the WP5D of the International Telecommunication Union’s Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) and included as part of the 5G standards in IMT-2020 technology recommendation. Dr. Günter Kleindl, Chair of the ETSI Technical Committee DECT, says: “With our traditional DECT standard we already received IMT-2000 approval by ITU-R twenty-one years ago, but the requirements for 5G were so much higher, that we had to develop a completely new, but compatible, radio standard.” Released last year, the standard sets an example of future connectivity: the infrastructure-less and autonomous, decentralized technology is designed for massive IoT networks for enterprises. It has no single points of failure and is accessible to anyone, costing only a fraction of the cellular networks both in dollars and in carbon footprint.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen offers readers a classic tale of a love that seems impossible-and a hunger that is undeniable. Jenny Cashman longs to escape the refined, rarified air of her exclusive Swiss education. At nineteen, she's desperate for independence-and to once again see the man she loves. So she sells her belongings, leaves Europe, and heads to Las Vegas. The sight of Steve Jason's newest palatial hotel and casino thrills Jenny-but not as much as the sight of the man himself. Steve came to her rescue after her father died, paying for her years of expensive schooling. Now, she must convince him that she's old enough to make her own decisions . . . including about her passion for him. But how can he keep her safe when she seems oblivious to her own stunning beauty and the reactions she gets from other men? It will take all of Steve's resolve to protect her-especially from his own desires.

Moving forward sideways like a crab / Shani Mootoo.

A young man travels to Trinidad to reconnect with a transgender parent, uncovering the complex realities of love and family. Jonathan Lewis-Adey was nine when his parents separated, and his mother, Sid, vanished entirely from his life. It is not until he is a grown man that Jonathan finally reconnects with his beloved lost parent, only to find, to his shock and dismay, that the woman he knew as "Sid" in Toronto has become an elegant man named Sydney living in his native Trinidad. For nine years, Jonathan has paid regular visits to Sydney on his island retreat, trying with quiet desperation to rediscover the parent he adored inside this familiar stranger, and to overcome his lingering confusion and anger at the choices Sydney has made. At the novel's opening, Jonathan is summoned urgently to Trinidad where Sydney, now aged and dying, seems at last to offer him the gift he longs for: a winding story that moves forward sideways as it reveals the truths of Sydney's life. Abstract: The initial Human Genome Project was a landmark achievement, serving as an essential resource for basic and clinical science, as well as for understanding human history, for over two decades. However, it needs an upgrade due to missing data, inaccurately assembled regions, and its inability to fully represent and identify sequence variants equitably. A single reference map, regardless of its completeness, cannot encapsulate the variation across the human population, leading to biases and ultimately inequity in genomic studies. Recognizing this limitation, the new initiative known as the Human Pangenome Project aims to deliver hundreds of highly accurate and complete genomes. This effort intends to define all bases of each chromosome from telomere to telomere (T2T), ensuring a broader representation of common variants across the human species. Achieving these goals will require the rise of new tools and technology standards for complete genome assemblies and pangenomics, which will have broad and lasting impact on genomic research.

Short bio: Throughout her career, she has developed innovative computational and experimental approaches to advance understanding of centromeric and pericentromeric DNAs. She works at the forefront of genome technologies as part of the T2T and Pangenome initiative to construct genetic and epigenetic maps to expand our understanding of their structure and function. As a group leader, she prioritizes fostering a creative and scientifically rigorous environment that supports inclusivity and diversity within our scientific team. She also prioritizes training that operates at the intersection of science, justice, and equity.
