Perceptions of Dental Hygienists About Thesis Completion in Graduate Education

Few studies have been published on thesis completion experiences of master’s degree students. However, for doctoral students, dissertation completion has been found to be dependent on individual, relational, and institutional factors. The aim of this study was to examine dental hygienists’ perceptions of their experiences completing a thesis as a requirement for an advanced degree. A qualitative phenomenological research design was used utilizing virtual focus groups with a national purposive sample of dental hygienists (n=25) who had graduated from a degree program in which a thesis was a requirement for the degree. Data analysis used an inductive approach to identify themes using Liechty et al.’s framework of individual, relational, and institutional factors impacting completion of a dissertation. Liechty et al.’s framework is based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of learning. In the results, individual factors identified included family/work responsibilities, lack of understanding of the thesis process, time management, health issues, and reaching personal and professional goals. Relational factors focused primarily on positive and negative experiences with the thesis advisor/committee and support from expert peers/family. Institutional factors included the thesis structure, financial concerns, and challenges in recruiting research participants. This study found many factors influencing the thesis experience that may help guide the process in graduate degree programs. In addition, the findings suggest a need to provide mentoring and support for thesis advisors and committee members to more effectively guide students through the thesis process. Effective modifications of these may improve retention of students and facilitate timely completion of thesis research.

The SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak: Diagnosis, Infection Prevention, and Public Perception

At the end of 2019 and early 2020, an outbreak of pneumonia of unknown etiology emerged in the city of Wuhan in China. The cases were found to be caused by a novel beta coronavirus, which was subsequently named SARS-CoV-2 by the World Health Organization (WHO). The virus has since spread further in China and to other regions of the world, having infected more than 88 K people, and causing close to 3000 deaths as of March 1, 2020. More than 50 million people remain in quarantine at this time. Scientists and clinicians globally are working swiftly to combat COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. Notably, diagnostic assays have been developed rapidly in many countries, and have played significant roles in diagnosis, monitoring, surveillance, and infection control. Starting February 29, 2020, the development and performance of molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2 in high complexity Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) laboratories prior to emergency use authorization was allowed by the US FDA. Although the epidemic is evolving rapidly, many valuable lessons have been learned and many questions remain to be answered. Here we invited multiple experts across the globe from clinical laboratories, public health laboratories, infection control, and diagnostic industry to share their views on the diagnosis, infection control, and public perception of SARS-CoV-2.

Operative Intervention Does Not Change Pain Perception in Patients With Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Researchers investigated pain perception in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) by analyzing pre- and postoperative physical function (PF), pain interference (PI), and depression domains of the Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS). They hypothesized that 1) because of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a majority of patients with DFUs would have high PROMIS PI scores unchanged by operative intervention, and 2) the initially assessed PI, PF, and depression levels would be correlated with final outcomes. Seventy-five percent of patients with DFUs reported pain, most likely because of painful DPN. Those who reported high PI and low PF were likely to report depression. PF, PI, and depression levels were unchanged after operative intervention or healing of DFUs.

New BPEA Research on Partisanship, Poverty, Unemployment, Homebuyer Perceptions and Capital Controls

BPEA co-editor Justin Wolfers describes new research that found: people dropped out of the labor force before the recession started; there are better ways to forecast unemployment; homebuyer expectations helped inflate the bubble; the U.S. is not actually as politically polarized as most people think; central banks’ recent experiments with capital controls haven’t delivered results; and the U.S. is making inroads fighting poverty.
