Lighting Up the Apocalypse 34: Open Heaven, the White Rider with Many Names, and the Lake of Fire

In Revelation 19:11-21, the heavens are opened, revealing the mounted Word of God, and His final conquest over evil. We are helped with this exhilarating and disturbing passage by seeing echoes in Psalm 72/71:2, Psalm 44/5:3-5, Isaiah 63:1-3, and listening to the wisdom of ancient commentators.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but with no name, maybe not

The famous quotation from Shakespeare is that "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet". But what if the rose had no name. What if every time you talked about it, you had to come up with a description, you know that thing with the pretty pink petals, except sometimes they are red, and sometimes white, but it smells really nice, except some don't really smell and others do. You know the thing with multiple layers of petals except for the wild ones that only have one layer of petals.

Maybe not so sweet.

What about the other way round? You build a really cool system that works effectively and then it turns out that someone has named it? Now that is nice, and yes, your thing suddenly smells sweeter.

I've had this happen a lot. When we first started WSO2 we applied a lot of cool approaches that we learnt from Apache. But they weren't about Open Source, they were about Open Source Development. And when they got names it became easier to explain. One aspect of that is Agile. We all know what Agile means and why its good. Another aspect is Meritocracy. So now I talk about a meritocratic, agile development team and people get me. It helps them to understand why WSO2 is a good thing.

When Sanjiva and I started WSO2 we wanted to get rid of EJBs: we wanted to remove the onion-layers of technology that had built up in middleware and create a simpler, smaller, more effective stack. It turns out we created lean software, and that is what we call it today. We also create orthogonal (or maybe even orthonormal) software. That term isn't so well understood, but if you are a mathematician you will get what we mean.

Why am I suddenly talking about this? Because today, Srinath posted a note letting me know that something else we have been doing for a while has a nice name.

It turns out that the architecture we promote for Big Data analysis, you know, the one where we pipe the data through an event bus, into both real-time complex event processing and also into Cassandra where we apply Hive running on Hadoop to crunch it up and batch analyse it, and then store it either in a traditional SQL database for reports to be generated, or occasionally in different Cassandra NoSQL tables, you know that architecture?

Aha! Its the Lambda Architecture. And yes, its so much easier to explain now its got a nice name. Read more here: http://srinathsview.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/implementing-bigdata-lambda.html

The Relationship Between Electronic Word-of-Mouth Information, Information Adoption, and Investment Decisions of Vietnamese Stock Investors

Aim/Purpose: This study investigates the relationship between Electronic Word-of-Mouth (EWOM), Information Adoption, and the stock investment of Vietnamese investors. Background: Misinformation spreads online, and a lack of strong information analysis skills can lead Vietnamese investors to make poor stock choices. By understanding how online conversations and information processing influence investment decisions, this research can help investors avoid these pitfalls. Methodology: This study applies Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to investigate how non-professional investors react to online information and which information factors influence their investment decisions. The final sample includes 512 investors from 18 to 65 years old from various professional backgrounds (including finance, technology, education, etc.). We conducted a combined online and offline survey using a convenience sampling method from August to November 2023. Contribution: This study contributes to the growing literature on Electronic Word-of-Mouth (EWOM) and its impact on investment decisions. While prior research has explored EWOM in various contexts, we focus on Vietnamese investors, which can offer valuable insights into its role within a developing nation’s stock market. Investors, particularly those who are new or less experienced, are often susceptible to the influence of EWOM. By examining EWOM’s influence in Vietnam, this study sheds light on a crucial factor impacting investment behavior in this emerging market. Findings: The results show that EWOM has a moderate impact on the Information Adoption and investment decisions of Vietnamese stock investors. Information Quality (QL) is the factor that has the strongest impact on Information Adoption (IA), followed by Information Credibility (IC) and Attitude Towards Information (AT). Needs for Information (NI) only have a small impact on Information Adoption (IA). Finally, Information Adoption (IA) has a limited influence on investor decisions in stock investment. We also find that investors need to verify information through official sites before making investment decisions based on posts in social media groups. Recommendations for Practitioners: The findings suggest that state management and media agencies need to coordinate to improve the quality of EWOM information to protect investors and promote the healthy development of the stock market. Social media platform managers need to moderate content, remove false information, prioritize displaying authentic information, cooperate with experts, provide complete information, and personalize the experience to enhance investor trust and positive attitude. Securities companies need to provide complete, accurate, and updated information about the market and investment products. They can enhance investor trust and positive attitude by developing news channels, interacting with investors, and providing auxiliary services. Listed companies need to take the initiative to improve the quality of information disclosure and ensure clarity, comprehensibility, and regular updates. Use diverse communication channels and improve corporate governance capacity to increase investor trust and positive attitude. Investors need to seek information from reliable sources, compare information from multiple sources, and carefully check the source and author of the information. They should improve their investment knowledge and skills, consult experts, define investment goals, and build a suitable investment portfolio. Recommendation for Researchers: This study synthesized previous research on EWOM, but there is still a gap in the field of securities because each nation has its laws, regulations, and policies. The relationships between the factors in the model are not yet clear, and there is a need to develop a model with more interactive factors. The research results need to be further verified, and more research can be conducted on the influence of investor psychology, investment experience, etc. Impact on Society: This study finds that online word-of-mouth (EWOM) can influence Vietnamese investors’ stock decisions, but information quality is more important. Policymakers should regulate EWOM accuracy, fund managers should use social media to reach investors, and investors should diversify their information sources. Future Research: This study focuses solely on the stock market, while individual investors in Vietnam may engage in various other investment forms such as gold, real estate, or cryptocurrencies. Therefore, future research could expand the scope to include other investment types to gain a more comprehensive understanding of how individual investors in Vietnam utilize electronic word-of-mouth (EWOM) and adopt information in their investment decision-making process. Furthermore, while these findings may apply to other emerging markets with similar levels of financial literacy as Vietnam, they may not fully extend to countries with higher financial literacy rates. Hence, further studies could be conducted in developed countries to examine the generalizability of these findings. Finally, future research could see how EWOM’s impact changes over a longer period. Additionally, a more nuanced understanding of the information adoption process could be achieved by developing a research model with additional factors.

Analysis of Machine-Based Learning Algorithm Used in Named Entity Recognition

Aim/Purpose: The amount of information published has increased dramatically due to the information explosion. The issue of managing information as it expands at this rate lies in the development of information extraction technology that can turn unstructured data into organized data that is understandable and controllable by computers Background: The primary goal of named entity recognition (NER) is to extract named entities from amorphous materials and place them in pre-defined semantic classes. Methodology: In our work, we analyze various machine learning algorithms and implement K-NN which has been widely used in machine learning and remains one of the most popular methods to classify data. Contribution: To the researchers’ best knowledge, no published study has presented Named entity recognition for the Kikuyu language using a machine learning algorithm. This research will fill this gap by recognizing entities in the Kikuyu language. Findings: An evaluation was done by testing precision, recall, and F-measure. The experiment results demonstrate that using K-NN is effective in classification performance. Recommendation for Researchers: With enough training data, researchers could perform an experiment and check the learning curve with accuracy that compares to state of art NER. Future Research: Future studies may be done using unsupervised and semi-supervised learning algorithms for other resource-scarce languages.

Next-generation global e-infrastructure for taxon names registry

Zookeys, the first zoological journal to introduce automatic registration in ZooBank

The latest issue of ZooKeys - no. 346 - has been automatically registered in ZooBank on its day of publication last Friday. This marks the successful deployment of an automated registration-to-publication pipeline for taxonomic names for animals. The innovative workflow was jointly funded by the EU FP7 funded project pro-iBiosphere and a U.S. National Science Foundation project to develop the Global Names Architecture (DBI-1062441).

The process of post-publication recording and indexing of species names has a long tradition, in some cases dating as far back as the middle of 19th century. But now in the 21st century with the advance of modern technologies and the opportunity to publish taxonomic novelties online, the process of post-publication recording brought into focus the concept of automated pre-publication registration.

Why is this important? The proportion of 'turbo-taxonomic' papers describing hundreds of new species increases. Registration of hundreds of new species is an issue, however it is even more important that the final publication data of the pre-registered names are reported back to ZooBank on the day of publication.

Launched as an open access peer reviewed journal in 2008, to coincide and adopt from inception the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature changes for electronic publications, ZooKeys was the first journal to provide a mandatory in-house registration in ZooBank. Since 2008, it has contributed about one third of all names currently registered in ZooBank. With the adoption of the automated ZooBank registration, ZooKeys continues its mission to set novel trends in biodiversity publishing.

Implementation of automated workflows and invention of XML-based tools will facilitate the process of publication and dissemination of biodiversity information. It will pave the way for unification and streamlining the registration process, even more to building the next-generation e-infrastructure for a common global taxon names registry. Within the pro-iBiosphere project and in cooperation with Plazi that have created the TaxPub XML schema, an automated registration workflow for plants has already been established between the International Plant Names Index (IPNI) and the PhytoKeys journal, to be applied soon also for fungi between Index Fungorum and the journal MycoKeys.

Article Alert: Scientific names of organisms: attribution, rights, and licensing

Background: As biological disciplines extend into the ‘big data’ world, they will need a names-based infrastructure toindex and interconnect distributed data. The infrastructure must have access to all names of all organisms if it is to manage all information. Those who compile lists of species hold different views as to the intellectual property rights that apply to the lists. This creates uncertainty that impedes the development of a much-needed infrastructure for sharing biological data in the digital world.

Findings: The laws in the United States of America and European Union are consistent with the position that scientific names of organisms and their compilation in checklists, classifications or taxonomic revisions are not subject to copyright. Compilations of names, such as classifications or checklists, are not creative in the sense of copyright law. Many content providers desire credit for their efforts.

Conclusions: A ‘blue list’ identifies elements of checklists, classifications and monographs to which intellectual property rights do not apply. To promote sharing, authors of taxonomic content, compilers, intermediaries, and aggregators should receive citable recognition for their contributions, with the greatest recognition being given to the originating authors. Mechanisms for achieving this are discussed.
