Biomass resources in Alaska are extensive and diverse, comprising millions of acres of standing small-diameter trees, diseased or dead trees, and trees having lowgrade timber.

Cofiring of biomass and coal at electrical generation facilities is gaining in importance as a means of reducing fossil fuel consumption, and more than 40 facilities in the United States have conducted test burns. Given the large size of many coal plants, cofiring at even low rates has the potential to utilize relatively large volumes of biomass. This could have important forest management implications if harvest residues or salvage timber are supplied to coal plants. Other feedstocks suitable for cofiring include wood products manufacturing residues, woody municipal wastes, agricultural residues, short-rotation intensive culture forests, or hazard fuel removals. Cofiring at low rates can often be done with minimal changes to plant handling and processing equipment, requiring little capital investment. Cofiring at higher rates can involve repowering entire burners to burn biomass in place of coal, or in some cases, repowering entire powerplants. Our research evaluates the current status of biomass cofiring in North America, identifying current trends and success stories, types of biomass used, coal plant sizes, and primary cofiring regions. We also identify potential barriers to cofiring. Results are presented for more than a dozen plants that are currently cofiring or have recently announced plans to cofire.

In this paper we analyze a continuous version of the maximal covering location problem, in which the facilities are required to be interconnected by means of a graph structure in which two facilities are allowed to be linked if a given distance is not exceed. We provide a mathematical programming framework for the problem and different resolution strategies. First, we propose a Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming formulation, and derive properties of the problem that allow us to project the continuous variables out avoiding the nonlinear constraints, resulting in an equivalent pure integer programming formulation. Since the number of constraints in the integer programming formulation is large and the constraints are, in general, difficult to handle, we propose two branch-&-cut approaches that avoid the complete enumeration of the constraints resulting in more efficient procedures. We report the results of an extensive battery of computational experiments comparing the performance of the different approaches.

The grain-drying facilities adopt technical means of providing the grain-drying facilities 1 which include: a biomass combustion furnace 3 provided with a heat exchanger 24 for generating hot air on the basis of a combustion heat of a biomass fuel and an outside air which has been taken in from the outside; and a circulation type grain-drying apparatus 2 provided with a grain-drying portion 7 to which the hot air that has been generated in the biomass combustion furnace 3 is supplied through a pipe 15 for supplying the hot air, wherein the above described circulation type grain-drying apparatus 2 has a grain-heating portion 6 which has a plurality of heating pipes 6a for heating the grains in the above described grain storing/circulating tank 5, and also has an air-exhaust fan 14 that is communicated with an exhaust side opening 6c that is located in one end side of each of the heating pipes 6a, and has a pipe 11 for supplying an exhaust hot-air, which communicates the exhaust hot-air sent from the above described biomass combustion furnace 3 with a supply side opening 6b that is located in the other end side of the heating pipe 6a.

A woman in her 90s living at the Bradford Valley Care Community is the latest coronavirus victim in the region.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department (AFCD) and the Leisure & Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced today that some of their facilities will be closed in light of the latest developments of COVID-19.

Country park barbecue sites and campsites of the AFCD will be closed from 6pm on March 28 for 14 days. There are 163 barbecue sites and 41 campsites under the management of the AFCD.

During the closure of these facilities, barbecue or camping activities in country parks will not be allowed and AFCD staff will step up patrols of the sites concerned and take appropriate action against any violation of relevant regulations.

As for LCSD facilities, its free outdoor leisure facilities will be closed from 6pm on March 28.

Other venues and facilities with services already suspended will continue to be closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, the Housing Authority will close its outdoor sports and recreational facilities from 6pm tomorrow until further notice.
