The BSE Midcap index was down by 1.7 percent, while the Smallcap index fell 1.4 percent.

The Nifty formed a Gravestone Doji pattern on the daily charts.

Sectorally, the action was seen in BSE Finance index, which was up 3.5 percent, followed by the Bankex that closed 2.9 percent higher.

All eyes will be on the FOMC outcome later in the day, say experts. But, the strong rally on D-Street has set the tone for the Nifty to reclaim 9,600 and possibly head towards 10,000.
