The generative AI market is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the increasing parameter size of Large Language Models (LLMs). This growth is pushing the boundaries of performance requirements for training hardware within data centers. For an in-depth look at this, consider the insights provided in "HBM3E: All About Bandwidth". Once trained, these models are deployed across a diverse range of applications. They are transforming sectors such as finance, meteorology, image and voice recognition, healthcare, augmented reality, high-speed trading, and industrial, to name just a few.

The critical process that utilizes these trained models is called AI inference. Inference is the capability of processing real-time data through a trained model to swiftly and effectively generate predictions that yield actionable outcomes. While the AI market has primarily focused on the requirements of training infrastructure, there is an anticipated shift towards prioritizing inference as these models are deployed.

The computational power and memory bandwidth required for inference are significantly lower than those needed for training. Inference engines typically need between 300-700GB/s of memory bandwidth, compared to 1-3TB/s for training. Additionally, the cost of inference needs to be lower, as these systems will be widely deployed not only in data centers but also at the network's edge (e.g., 5G) and in end-user equipment like security cameras, cell phones, and automobiles.

When designing an AI inference engine, there are several memory options to consider, including DDR, LPDDR, GDDR, and HBM. The choice depends on the specific application, bandwidth, and cost requirements. DDR and LPDDR offer good memory density, HBM provides the highest bandwidth but requires 2.5D packaging, and GDDR offers high bandwidth using standard packaging and PCB technology.

The GDDR7 standard, announced by JEDEC in March of this year, features a data rate of up to 192GB/s per device, a chip density of 32Gb, and the latest data integrity features. The high data rate is achieved by using PAM3 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation) with 3 levels (+1, 0, -1) to transmit 3 bits over 2 cycles, whereas the current GDDR6 generation uses NRZ (non-return-to-zero) to transmit 2 bits over 2 cycles.

GDDR7 offers many advantages for AI Inference having the best balance of bandwidth and cost. For example, an AI Inference system requiring 500GB/s memory bandwidth will need only 4 GDDR7 DRAM running at 32Gbp/s (32 data bits x 32Gbp/s per pin = 1024Gb/s per DRAM). The same system would use 13 LPDDR5X PHYs running at 9.6Gbp/s, which is currently the highest data rate available (32 data bits x 9.6Gb/s = 307Gb/s per DRAM).

Abidjan, Ivory Coast — Burkina Faso's military regime wants to reinstate the death penalty after the West African country abolished it in 2018, a government source told AFP on Saturday.  The latest execution in Burkina Faso was in 1988, according to Amnesty International.  Reintroducing capital punishment to the penal code "is being considered. It's up to the government to discuss it, then make the proposal to the Transitional Legislative Assembly (ALT) for adoption," the source said, adding that the date had not been chosen.  Justice Minister Rodrigue Bayala said Friday — after parliament passed a bill introducing community service — that "the issue of death penalty, which is being discussed, will be implemented in the draft criminal code."  Bayala also said there could be further amendments to the criminal code, "to follow the vision and the guidelines given by the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traore," who seized power in a September 2022 coup.  The Burkinabe government in July passed a bill that included plans to ban homosexuality.  Amnesty International has reported a surge in the use of the death penalty on the African continent, saying in a statement in October that "recorded executions more than tripled and recorded death sentences increased significantly by 66%."  On the other hand, the rights group noted that "24 countries across sub-Saharan Africa have abolished the death penalty for all crimes while two additional countries have abolished it for ordinary crimes only."   "Kenya and Zimbabwe currently have bills tabled to abolish the death penalty for all crimes, while Gambia ... has commenced a constitutional amendment process that will ... effectively abolish the death penalty," it said.

Tehran, Iran — A militant attack near the Pakistani border with Iran left five Iranian forces dead, the state-run IRNA news agency reported Sunday. The report said the dead were ethnic Baluch members of the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard's volunteer Basij force and were killed in Saravan city in Sistan and Baluchistan province. Saravan is some 1,400 km (870 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Earlier in the day, state TV reported that Revolutionary Guard forces killed three terrorists and arrested nine others in a military operation. The report did not specify which group the suspects belonged to. Last month, unknown gunmen killed four people, including the chief of the Revolutionary Guard in the province. In September, gunmen killed four border guards in Sistan and Baluchistan province in two separate attacks. The militant group Jaish al-Adl, which seeks greater rights for the ethnic Baluch minority, claimed responsibility for one attack in which one officer and two soldiers were killed. The province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been the site of occasional deadly clashes involving militant groups, armed drug smugglers and Iranian security forces. It is one of the least developed parts of Iran. Relations between the predominantly Sunni Muslim residents of the region and Iran's Shiite theocracy have long been strained.

BAKU, Azerbaijan — The head of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog said Tuesday he's hopeful that meetings this week with Iranian officials, including the country's new president, can lead to a breakthrough in monitoring the country's nuclear program, a longstanding issue that has gained new urgency as Israel has twice struck Iran amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will travel to Iran on Wednesday to meet for the first time with President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected in July. Grossi said he hopes to build on positive discussions he had with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the U.N. General Assembly in September. "We have a problem that we need to solve," Grossi said in an interview at the U.N. climate conference in Azerbaijan. "That is this gap, this lack of confidence, which we should not allow to grow into a self-fulfilling prophecy of using nuclear facilities as targets." He added: "There has been a bit of a dire straits dynamic with Iran that we want to go beyond." Iran is rapidly advancing its atomic program while increasing stockpiles of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels, all in defiance of international demands, according to the IAEA. Iran says its program is for energy purposes, not to build weapons. Grossi's visit comes as Israel and Iran have traded missile attacks in recent months after more than a year of war in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas, a group supported by Iran. Grossi noted that international law prohibits the attack of nuclear facilities and "it's obvious that is something that can have radiological consequences." The Biden administration said last month that it had won assurances from Israel that it would not attack nuclear or oil sites. A 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers put limits on Iran's nuclear program, which the West fears could be used to make nuclear weapons. The deal included the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran. But that deal collapsed after Donald Trump's administration in 2018 pulled the United States from it. That led Iran to abandon all limits put on its program and enrich uranium to up to 60% purity. When asked if the IAEA feared Iran may be developing a bomb, Grossi said he didn't "have any information that would sustain that." He added that inspectors' job was not to "judge intentions," but rather verify that what Iran says about its nuclear program was true. Trump's reelection last week raises questions about whether and how the incoming administration and Iran may engage. Grossi said he had worked with the first Trump administration, which he said engaged in "seamless, professional work," and looked forward to looking with Trump's second administration. "Circumstances have changed in that the problem has grown bigger than it was," said Grossi. "The problem of not finding a solution."
