We speak with former Ohio state senator and Bernie Sanders presidential campaign staffer Nina Turner about how the 2024 election has left her and many voters “frustrated” and “exhausted.” While she is not endorsing a candidate, she denounces the white supremacist rhetoric of the Trump campaign, which she notes is “as American as apple pie.” Turner pushes back on comparisons of the Trump movement to the rise of Nazi Germany, which she argues threaten to whitewash the United States’ own anti-democratic history. “The unfulfilled promises of this country, the undealt-with anti-Blackness and other types of racism and bigotry have not been dealt with sufficiently,” she explains. “It is us, and we need to deal with it and not push it off on some other nation.”

Kamala Harris is blasting Donald Trump for vowing to protect women whether they “like it or not” at the same time he is calling for Republican Liz Cheney to be shot in the face. We get response from The Nation's abortion access correspondent Amy Littlefield and talk about 10 states with abortion rights on the ballot, including Arizona, Nevada, Florida, South Dakota and Missouri. Trump's remarks are a “succinct and clear definition of patriarchy,” says Littlefield. She argues the 2024 election will be decided in large part by white women and whether they will vote for abortion rights. Trump is “laying out the bargain that white patriarchy has offered for white women in this country,” says Littlefield. “He is saying, 'White women, we will protect you from Brown and Black men.'”

As Latino voters are a key voting bloc in the 2024 presidential election in battleground states like Nevada, Arizona and Pennsylvania, they have been targeted by a rise in Spanish-language misinformation. Most of the false messaging disparages Kamala Harris and supports Donald Trump, says Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa, host of Latino USA, which investigated the phenomenon in a new episode called “The Misinformation Web.” She interviewed some of the content creators in this “blob” of online vitriol and says there is almost no effective content moderation online, nor many reliable fact-checking sources in Spanish to counter the lies.

In the wake of the reelection of Donald Trump, some of the richest people in the world saw their net worths soar as stock prices rapidly shot up. “What was different about this election was how central billionaires were in the entire political discourse,” says The Lever's David Sirota, who joins Democracy Now! to discuss the outsized role of the super-rich in U.S politics, pointing out that both Trump and Kamala Harris campaigned heavily with billionaires, including Elon Musk and Mark Cuban. “These people are not giving money simply out of the goodness of their hearts. They want things. They have policy demands,” Sirota says. “The investors, the donors, like billionaires, are looking for a return on their investment.” Sirota, who previously worked as a communications adviser and speechwriter for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign, also explains how Elon Musk's influence on Trump’s campaign is a preview of the power he could wield if he ends up appointed to the Trump administration.

Традиционно, за несколько часов до церемонии закрытия фестиваля, которая состоится в кинотеатре «Пушкинский» и где будут вручены основные призы, были названы лауреаты так называемых «малых» наград. Это призы и отдельные упоминания от различных киногильдий и ассоциаций, работавших все семь дней проведения фестиваля.

Члены жюри NETPAC (Всемирная организация продвижения азиатского кино) назвали своих фаворитов. Это иранская лента «ДЫХАНИЕ ХОЛОДА» режиссёра-дебютанта Нахид Азизи Седиг. Приз был вручён с формулировкой «за погружение в сложную тему». Также эта организация вручила приз «за отражение нежности в водах Ганга» российско-индийскому фильму «НАДО СНИМАТЬ ФИЛЬМЫ О ЛЮБВИ» режиссёра Романа Михайлова. Федерация киноклубов в конкурсе документального кино отдельно отметила реставрированный шедевр Дзиги Вертова «ЧЕЛОВЕК С КИНОАППАРАТОМ» и экспериментальную картину «ОГНЕННЫЙ ЛИС», но по некоторым причинам не смогла наградить их (эти две ленты не входили в конкурсную программу). Жюри киноклубов призналось, что выбирало из четырёх картин, которые были сделаны на одном уровне, но после долгих споров и обсуждений было решено вручить приз иранской картине «ЛАДЬЯ» режиссёра Сэма Калантари за талантливое исследование взгляда художника.

Приз «Колючий взгляд» в конкурсе «Русские премьеры» Федерации киноклубов достался «НАДО СНИМАТЬ ФИЛЬМЫ О ЛЮБВИ» «за точную формулу смысла жизни в кино». Особое упоминание заслужил российский фильм из конкурса стран БРИКС «НЕНОРМАЛЬНЫЙ» (режиссёр Илья Маланин) «за музыку, преодолевающую притяжение». Главный же приз Международной Федерации киноклубов был вручен ленте «МАРТИН ЧИТАЕТ КОРАН» (Германия, режиссёр Юрий Сауле) «за глубину исследования бездны человеческого отчаяния».

Гильдия неигрового кино и телевидения отметило, что несмотря на жанровое многообразие её члены сделали выбор в сторону классического жёсткого дока с мало симпатичными героями «МЭЙ» (Китай, режиссёр Ло Дун) «за бескомпромиссный взгляд на реальность и её обитателей».

Приз зрительских симпатий на основе голосования, проходившего на всех конкурсных показах, получила уже упомянутая иранская лента «ДЫХАНИЕ ХОЛОДА».

Жюри российской кинокритики также отметило многожанровость конкурсонй программы, но предпочтение отдало неожиданному жанру «сократического диалога» уже называвшемуся фильму «МАРТИН ЧИТАЕТ КОРАН» «за глубину творческого поиска, выраженного через диалог». Специальное упоминание от наших критиков заслужил «СТЫД» дебютанта Мигеля Сададо производства Мексики и Катара «за яркий пример профессионального взгляда на возрождение человеческого духа».

Напомним, что несколькими днями ранее кинофестиваль стран БРИКС, проходивший с 19 по 23 апреля в рамках Московского международного кинофестиваля, объявил победителей. Приз за лучшую женскую роль удостоена Рана Хаттаб за фильм «Крысиная дыра» Моххамеда Эль-Саммана (Египет). Приз за лучшую мужскую роль присуждён российскому актеру Александру Яценко за фильм «Ненормальный» режиссера Ильи Маланина. Специальный приз жюри вручён фильму «Шаг к мечте: раз и навсегда», режиссер Да Пэн, Китай. Награду за лучшую режиссерскую работу получил Абу Бакр Шоки за ленту «Жокей пустыни» (Саудовская Аравия, Египет, Иордания). Эта же картина была признана лучшим фильмом фестиваля стран БРИКС. Главный призы-статуэтки Основного конкурса «Святой Георгий» 46 Московского международного кинофестиваля будут вручены чуть позже вечером 26 апреля. Награды достанутся лучшему фильму этого года, лучшему режиссёру, актёру, актрисе, а также будут награждены кинематографисты в других почётных основных номинациях.

26 апреля состоялась церемония награждения лауреатов 46 Московского Международного кинофестиваля. «Золото» получила драма «Стыд» Мигеля Сальгадо (Мексика, Катар). Единственный представитель отечественного кино в основном конкурсе «Пришелец» Ивана Соснина остался без наград.

Фильм о бойне в Сан-Фернандо и столкновении кардинально не похожих друг на друга мужчин, но попавших в одну общую унизительную ситуацию, мексиканская драма «Стыд (Shame)» режиссёра-дебютанта Мигеля Сальгадо, взяла главный приз 46 ММКФ как лучшая картина смотра.

Приз за лучшую режиссуру достался иранской постановщице Нахиде Азизи Седига за ленту «Дыхание холода (Cold sigh)». Специальный приз жюри вручили картине «Нирвана (Nirvana)» Асифа Ислама (Бангладеш).

«Серебряного Святого Георгия» за лучшую мужскую роль выиграл Хуан Рамон Лопес («Стыд»). Приз за женскую роль получила Марике Бейкирх за участие в немецкой драме «Шлимазл (Schlamassel)».

В конкурсе «Русские премьеры» победителем стала «Лгунья» Юлии Трофимовой. Особым упоминанием наградили «митьковскую» версию классики Пушкина «Евгений Телегин» Виктора Тихомирова.

Почётного «Золотого Святого Георгия» за вклад в мировой кинематограф вручили режиссёрскому сценаристу и режиссёру Сергею Урсуляку.

По традиции председатель основного жюри, исландский режиссёр, сценарист и продюсер Фридрик Тор Фридрикссон передал драгоценную цепь главы фестиваля его президенту – Никите Михалкову, который сохранит её до следующего смотра. Напомним, что в состав основного жюри вошли актриса Елена Лядова, режиссер Игорь Волошин, режиссер Хусейн Карабей.

В целом, победители 46 Московского международного кинофестиваля распределились следующим образом:

A few months ago, we asked a trivia question about Steve Jackson Games titles. For this installment, we're starting with the easier version of an obvious question because, in my opinion, the other version of it is a bit trickier . . .

November 5 is Election Day. I'll get back to that in a minute.

But first . . . Once upon a time I did not believe in conspiracy theories. That's why I enjoyed creating Illuminati and INWO. They showed the world through the eyes of a few complete nutballs, and it was a fun place to visit.

Things have changed, and not in a good way. The Internet made it easy for the nutballs to find each other and set up an echo chamber, and a tragic number of people found the simplicity of a Great Evil Conspiracy to be very attractive, compared to the messy complexities of the real world.

Also, some people REALLY ARE awful, and the net let THEM get together, too.

So now I really do believe in one conspiracy theory. If we were to diagram it as an INWO card layout, it would look like this . . .

At the center we have the Illuminati, of course. If we have to pick an analog from the game the Gnomes of Zurich are closest, though the power-mad Bavarians run a close second. At any rate, the real Illuminati here are a loose, but busy, cabal of billionaires who range from "very conservative" through "extremist," plus more than a few of those complete nutballs we were talking about. Between them, they have trillions of dollars to buy everything from individual votes to Supreme Court decisions. And they do.

Surrounding the billionaires are their high-level puppets. I'd assign those slots to:

• Donald Trump. He, in turn, controls the (Fanatic, Violent, Criminal, zero Power but high Transferrable Power) MAGAs. He thinks he controls the Republicans, but they are only paying lip service to him; they are clients of the billionaires.

• The Republican Party. The once-patriotic GOP has become a creature of the billionaires' whims. Yes, there are some decent Republicans left, but just by accepting the party's label they owe their positions to corruption. The Republicans, in turn, control the House of Representatives (still narrowly).

• The Supreme Court. You read the newspapers, right? Enough said. This pickup took decades for the Gnomes to achieve, and it's been worth every penny.

• Russia. Putin himself is part of the billionaire's club. The country, nukes and all, is his personal fiefdom.

We could extend this out to another level of extremists (hello NRA! Hello Cycle Gangs!) and puppets who won't admit who pulls their strings (hello, hello, Big Media!) but you get the idea.

Yep, I believe in one conspiracy now, and that's the one. No flat earth. No faked moon landings. Just a few people with a sizeable proportion of the world's wealth and the conviction that it makes them superior to the masses. And a lot of useful idiots, permitted to think they are free right up until they stop being useful.

After this election, you could be their property. It's the Golden Rule . . . When you have all the gold, you make all the rules.

So, getting back to the election. It's very important that you vote. You can't vote against the Illuminati who are trying to suck America dry. All you can do is vote against their tools. At this stage of the game that is ALL you can do, but it's a start.

Please vote for Kamala Harris. Please vote for the Democratic candidates for state and national offices. Even if you feel that the Democratic platform is terrible. Because if the Democrats win, you'll at least be guaranteed another vote in four years. If the Illuminati win, it's game over.

The (coded) hint was that the two items were closely related. Over the next few weeks and months, you'll see social media posts discussing how companies cannot offer holiday bonuses or will have to cut employees due to Trump's tariffs (proposed or enacted).

Some of these stories may be fiction or cautionary tales that illustrate the price the average American pays for a politician's decision.

But I can 100% tell you this is a reality many business owners in the manufacturing sector now face.

If you aren't aware of how tariffs work, it's relatively simple. The company importing the goods from a foreign country pays the fee. If a company has to pay 20%, 60%, or 200% more to bring that item into the United States, who ultimately bears that cost? The American people.

Over the last few days, I have been talking at length with my factory representatives, figuring out how much of an item I need to order now to offset any expanded costs later. In addition, we are looking at where we can move manufacturing to outside of China (hard mode, not a lot of places outside of China or Europe produce boardgame components at the scale our industry uses).

I've been speaking with my shipping representatives about the increasing freight costs we expect to see with a rise in tariffs. We're already paying extreme freight prices, which will only go up as demand increases. The last time tariffs were levied on Chinese manufactured goods, freight costs went up.

Now I am in a position that forces me to examine how much we may need to raise prices if the most extreme of the proposed tariffs goes into effect.

I'm also trying to do right by my staff. But I can only do so much, you know? How long can business owners incur these costs, protect our staff, and not have consumers pay through the nose? Can I accept breaking even for the time being to keep my people employed and our games affordable? But what happens when the company starts losing money?

Many CEOs and business owners are staring down this reality right now. This isn't just a theoretical exercise. We have to plan for the worst.

So, what do I plan to do about this? I will be even more present in my local and state business associations that have direct links to policy makers in D.C. I will take every opportunity to speak directly to those who have a say in this new administration about why this isn't good for the economy. I'm just a tiny player in the world of manufacturing. But I do know the power of my voice. And more importantly, I know the power your voice holds as well.

You can start putting pressure on your elected (or newly elected) officials by writing, calling, or contacting them through their open channels (many of them love social media). Tell them you do not want these proposed tariffs, and let them know how these cost increases will impact you. Hold them to their promises. Make your voice heard.

We are back from Big Bad Con in San Francisco. It was fun! Lots of nice people, playing games. What's not to like?

It was also a professionally useful event. We met with a variety of talented people. Exchanged ideas, exchanged business cards. I devoutly hope to put some of these folks to work, doing what they do best.

The organizers worked hard and with great enthusiasm. Communication was good. Event signage was good.

And many of the games were held in sleeping rooms, which meant one game per room, which is so, so good.

Finally . . . they required vaccination proof, tests, and masks. This isn't popular with conventions these days, and it should be. Yeah, it's a little hassle. SO WORTH IT.

This one is trickier for a couple of reasons. As Magesmiley noted on the forums when talking about the "Omega" question, somewhat of a software-sorting question hides here. There's also a bit of an oddity in the second question we're asking today that makes this more challenging. Still, let's see if we can't muddle toward an answer . . .

I had bought a RHP1 on 04/01/2024 (FY 23-24) for 50 lakhs. I have sold a RHP2 on 10/11/2024 (FY 24-25) and computed a capital gain of 45 lakhs.
1. Can I take exemption u/s 54 by showing the capital gain of 45 lakhs in RHP1?
2. Any particular details to be mentioned in ITR of FY 24-25?

My ITR3 for AY 2023-24 has been processed by CPC under OLD REGIME without recognizing the Taxation Option exercised undersection 115BAC for NEW REGIME by filing FORM 10IE during AY 2022-23 on 01-Jun-2022, which has been CONTINUED for AY 2023-24, as EVIDENT in the ITR3 filed for this Assessment Year. I have also Registered my grievance in this regard in the e-portal of the IT Department and have sought RECTIFICATION FIVE TIMES under Section 154 but have got the same RECTIFICATION ORDER repeating the same MISTAKE with processing done under OLD REGIME with TAX DEMAND of Rs.87,000. (Similar thing had happened in AY 2022-23 but it was corrected by RECTIFICATION). I am in continuous correspondence through email and written communication several times with the Department, including grievances raised on E-PORTAL, but the issue remains UNRESOLVED. I have also registered my grievance in this regard in CPGRAMS Portal of GOI which is pending.
I request advice on further course of action to resolve the issue including as to whether i can file an Appeal under Section 264 .

I wasn't overly concerned. Some were saying it was tight, but the posh bloke off that politics podcast and a few others had said Kamala was going to win easily and Elon Musk seemed to be the only one saying there would be a landslide the other way and he seemed to have ulterior motives.

I had my full body scan done a couple of weeks ago and I very much appreciate this regular check up to make sure nothing nasty has returned or if my body is concocting a new way to kill me.

Almost the whole town was burned down overnight and it was only the intervention of the fire brigade that kept the flames at bay in the industrial estate where the conflagration had started.  So only maybe one building was affected, but it's horrible to think of what might have happened if no one had called 999. Apparently the industrial estate has about four fires a year, so they are especially lucky that the fire fighters show up.
