Penn State Hazleton's trick-or-treating is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 24, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the Sports and Recreation Field at the campus. Children attending the event must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 

In 2014, Jane Cook joined the second-ever training class of Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward volunteers. She was already active in the Monocacy Creek Watershed Association, but since then, she has logged more than 1,000 volunteer hours educating the public and restoring local watersheds.

Longtime School of Music faculty member Daryl Durran and his wife, Lois Durran, a violinist, have made an estate commitment of $750,000 to establish the Daryl and Lois Durran Endowment for the School of Music, which will provide scholarship support to undergraduate and graduate students in the school. Daryl Durran, professor emeritus of pedagogy and performance in bassoon, retired in 2022 after 39 years on the faculty.

Alumna Tanya Seyfert’s estate commitment will create scholarships for students who are affiliated with the military or who participate in work-study at the University Libraries, as well as funding urgent priorities set by Libraries leadership.

Jeffrey Goldberg and Matthew Vogt contribute a significant portion of the sales of their company, Sky Devil Wines, to veterans and veteran-specific causes. In 2018 they established a fund that is now named the Sky Devil Veteran's Entrepreneur Fund. The first two recipients of proceeds from that fund were recently named.

Penn State is launching a new Employee Resource Group (ERG) for employees who serve as caregivers for other individuals in their lives, including family members such as elders or children of any age who are unwell, or have special needs or disabilities. The new ERG, called Penn State Cares and is open to employees at all campuses, seeks to create a workplace where caregivers can support each other, use and expand existing university resources, and enable employees, who are caregivers, to thrive and grow.

Penn State Berks wrapped up its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 11 with its 12th annual Latino Forum, an outreach effort for local high school students. Chancellor Radha Pyati provided a warm welcome to the students in Spanish, and she reached out to both students and the greater Latino community through a Facebook Live interview on La Mega Radio Station, a Spanish-language station who was on site for the event. Pyati was also interviewed live on La Mega’s Morning Show on Oct. 8.

Penn State Berks is holding a free public event, the “Eras Tour (Penn State Berks Version)” on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the Perkins Plaza. The event is held in junction with the course “Taylor Swift, Gender, and Communication,” offered this fall. Admission is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. 

Penn State Berks took learning out of the classroom in early October when 14 students, faculty and staff visited "Field of Screams," a haunted Halloween attraction in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The event was organized as an experiential learning activity for humanities, arts and social sciences courses (such as "Rhetoric of American Horror Films" and "Transformative Texts") that deal with topics related to horror and monstrosity within popular cultural texts. 

Penn State Berks will welcome Piscataway Nation singers and dancers to honor and celebrate Indigenous and Native American Heritage Month. The event is free and open to the public and will take place on Monday, Nov. 4, at 12:15 p.m. in the Perkins Student Center Auditorium.

How do you translate what you learned in a semester-long course to a community celebration for an audience ranging in age from kindergarteners to senior citizens? That was the challenge to Penn State Berks students in the “Taylor Swift, Gender and Communication” course, and they rose to the occasion.

Thaddeus Stevens College, a two-year trade and technology-focused college, has recently expanded its articulation agreement with Penn State Harrisburg. Students completing their studies at Thaddeus Stevens College can transfer a variety of general education credits toward receiving a bachelor of science degree in human development and family studies from Penn State Harrisburg.

The Office of the Registrar and the Lambert Undergraduate Advising Center at Penn State Harrisburg will present “Schweek” scheduling week to assist students in scheduling their courses for spring 2025.

Retired Master Sgt. Gary Barb, campus technology officer at Penn State Harrisburg, is a veteran of both the U.S. Navy, which he served from 1989 to 1993, and the Pennsylvania Air National Guard, which he served from 1994 to 2012. His daughter, Jessica Barb, is a communications major at Penn State Harrisburg, where she participates in the Army ROTC program, and serves in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Jack Saint Clair will bring his 17-piece jazz orchestra to Penn State Abington for a free concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 in Sutherland Auditorium.

Penn State Laureate Michele Dunleavy, professor of dance at the University Park campus, will continue her tour of the Commonwealth Campuses with a visit to Penn State Abington on Nov. 11. She will present “Improvising a Life” at 12:15 p.m. in 9 Sutherland Auditorium with musician Jennifer Peacock.

Penn State Harrisburg's women's soccer team won the 2024 United East Championship in a double-overtime draw that ended with a 4-3 penalty kick victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Nov. 9.

One is a retired high school teacher from Leesport. Another is an insurance professional and mother of two from Harrisburg. The third is a retired dentist who lives near State College. They’ve never met but share common bonds: All suffer from atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which is caused by an irregular and often rapid heartbeat in the upper chambers of the heart. This summer, the trio were among the first patients to undergo a newly approved heart ablation procedure at Penn State Health hospitals.

Members of Penn State Health Life Lion LLC were honored at a recent event for their crucial role in a cardiac arrest save that tested Cumberland County’s innovative Avive 4-Minute City initiative, a program designed to improve response times for cardiac emergencies.

A poetry reading by Mike Simms will take place from 12:05 to 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Titelman Study of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts at Penn State Altoona. Simms is a poet, novelist, essayist, political activist, editor and publisher.

Penn State Altoona’s Ivyside Dance Ensemble will present its fall 2024 performance at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14-15 in the Wolf Kuhn Theatre of the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts. The performance will consist of seven dances from director KT Huckabee, choreographer and instructor Jaye Mackinson, and returning guest choreographer Ana Rossi-Lanzendorfer.

Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, professor of English at Penn State Altoona, will be featured in the 55th annual Poetry International Festival in the Netherlands. The event will take place June 12 through 15, 2025.

World Kindness Day is Wednesday, Nov. 13, but at Penn State Altoona, we are celebrating all week. Events include a friendship-themed Taco Tuesday, sweet treats, and displays of affirmations on Kindness Trees throughout campus.

Penn State Altoona student-athlete Eugene Heyman, of Boiling Springs, was selected as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Men’s Swimmer of the Week on Monday, Nov. 11, when the league office announced its weekly awards. Heyman had two individual first-place finishes and also was part of a relay first place in the Lions’ sweep of conference opponents Alfred State College and Pitt-Bradford.
