Election Observers Arrive in Federated States of Micronesia
HONOLULU (Feb. 27) -- A delegation of election observers coordinated by the East-West Center in Honolulu has begun arriving in the Federated States of Micronesia to act as official monitors for the FSM national congressional and Chuuk state elections on March 3. Some 20 observers from a variety of countries in the Asia Pacific region will be participating in the monitoring project, which will focus on learning about local election processes and promoting their integrity and legitimacy.

Among the observers is expected to be U.S. congressional Rep. Eni F. H. Faleomavaega of American Samoa, along with a number of other prominent scholars and diplomats. Teams of observers and translators will be stationed at a number of key polling and vote tabulating locations in Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap.

HONOLULU (Oct. 9) – Longtime Washington Post White House correspondent, nationally syndicated columnist and acclaimed Ronald Reagan biographer Lou Cannon will present a free public lecture in Honolulu on Oct. 20 on the current state of turmoil in America’s news media.

 

Cannon will be delivering his East-West Center address, titled “ Journalism on the Brink? – The Decline of Newspapers, the Rise of the Internet and the Trivialization of Political Coverage,” as the Center’s 2008 George Chaplin Fellow in Distinguished Journalism.

HONOLULU (Aug. 18) – East-West Center President Charles E. Morrison was unanimously elected to a second term as chair of the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) at a PECC Standing Committee meeting in Bangkok on July 26. He is the first chair to have served a three-year term and the first American to chair PECC since 1993.   PECC also named Mr. Jusuf Wanandi of Indonesia as the Asia co-chair, beginning in 2009.  Mr. Wanandi has served on the EWC’s Board of Governors and has chaired its International Advisory Panel.

East-West Center Launches Cooperative India-Pakistan Research Project

focuses on ‘peri-urban’ development issues

HONOLULU (Feb. 3, 2012) – East-West Center environmental researchers have launched a new cooperative project with specialists in India and Pakistan to collaborate on studying development issues in critical ‘peri-urban’ areas that lie between cities and the countryside.

 This project “offers a rare opportunity for Indian and Pakistani researchers to work together on a shared exploration of the challenges and impacts of an issue that deeply affects both nations,” said EWC research fellow Sumeet Saksena, the project’s principal investigator.
