Accessibility in 360-degree video players. (arXiv:2005.03373v1 [cs.MM])

Any media experience must be fully inclusive and accessible to all users regardless of their ability. With the current trend towards immersive experiences, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and 360-degree video, it becomes key that these environments are adapted to be fully accessible. However, until recently the focus has been mostly on adapting the existing techniques to fit immersive displays, rather than considering new approaches for accessibility designed specifically for these increasingly relevant media experiences. This paper surveys a wide range of 360-degree video players and examines the features they include for dealing with accessibility, such as Subtitles, Audio Description, Sign Language, User Interfaces, and other interaction features, like voice control and support for multi-screen scenarios. These features have been chosen based on guidelines from standardization contributions, like in the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the International Communication Union (ITU), and from research contributions for making 360-degree video consumption experiences accessible. The in-depth analysis has been part of a research effort towards the development of a fully inclusive and accessible 360-degree video player. The paper concludes by discussing how the newly developed player has gone above and beyond the existing solutions and guidelines, by providing accessibility features that meet the expectations for a widely used immersive medium, like 360-degree video.

System for selecting software components based on a degree of coherence

Disclosed is a novel system and method to select software components. A set of available software components are accessed. Next, one or more dimensions are defined. Each dimension is an attribute to the set of available software components. A set of coherence distances between each pair of the available software components in the set of available software components is calculated for each of the dimensions that have been defined. Each of the coherence distances are combined between each pair of the available software components that has been calculated in the set of the coherence distances into an overall coherence degree for each of the available software components. Using the overall coherence degree, one or more software components are selected to be included in a software bundle.

360 degree rotatable lifter arm for log singulator

The present invention discloses a log sawing system comprising multiple cutting blades. The multiple cutting blades are positioned to cut laterally or perpendicular to the centerline of the log which is to be cut. The logs are transported into cutting position using some type of log positioner. The multiple cutting blades are rotatably mounted on an arm which is pivotally mounted on a shaft in groups, being driven by an electrical or like motor, all of which are mounted onto a platform positioned adjacent to the log to be cut. Hydraulic lifters are used to partially rotate the saw blades into the cutting position adjacent the log. Means utilizing a computer and lasers are provided to develop a log cutting solution to best utilize the logs.

360-degree freedom electric cord device and system

A 360-degree freedom electric cord device system contains and manages automatic extension and retraction of an electric cord/cable supplying power to a push/pull-type electric machine, either self-propelled or not, for intended displacement or steering on a surface by a user. The 360-degree freedom electric cord device system, partly mounted on the electric machine, allows the power cord to clear obstacles on the surface and includes a self-retracting spool to automatically extend and rewind the power cord and continuously keeps physical tension therein, in a straight line and a natural position, during the displacement in any direction of the electric machine. With a ratchet mechanism, the device can also suitably be used independently of the machine as an electric retractable extension cord reel.

Vetrinary degree or science degree?

My daughter wants to work in wildlife conservation: research, management, and policy. Which degree would be better for a career in wildlife: veterinary (with a big debt) or master's in environmental biology? She planned for years to go to veterinary school, but then was waitlisted at the one offering in-state tuition (still a lot). So she talked herself out of vet school and applied for two masters in ecological biology (or biological ecology, idk) programs in Germany, where tuition is free. She got really excited about those. Then the vet school called and accepted her!

There are big pros and cons to either plan, but she is only 21 and is thinking about the next few years of school. I want her to look beyond that to what she wants to do with her life.

Computing the degrees of freedom of rank-regularized estimators and cousins

Rahul Mazumder, Haolei Weng.

Source: Electronic Journal of Statistics, Volume 14, Number 1, 1348--1385.

Abstract:
Estimating a low rank matrix from its linear measurements is a problem of central importance in contemporary statistical analysis. The choice of tuning parameters for estimators remains an important challenge from a theoretical and practical perspective. To this end, Stein’s Unbiased Risk Estimate (SURE) framework provides a well-grounded statistical framework for degrees of freedom estimation. In this paper, we use the SURE framework to obtain degrees of freedom estimates for a general class of spectral regularized matrix estimators—our results generalize beyond the class of estimators that have been studied thus far. To this end, we use a result due to Shapiro (2002) pertaining to the differentiability of symmetric matrix valued functions, developed in the context of semidefinite optimization algorithms. We rigorously verify the applicability of Stein’s Lemma towards the derivation of degrees of freedom estimates; and also present new techniques based on Gaussian convolution to estimate the degrees of freedom of a class of spectral estimators, for which Stein’s Lemma does not directly apply.

Degeneracy in sparse ERGMs with functions of degrees as sufficient statistics

Sumit Mukherjee.

Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 2, 1016--1043.

Abstract:
A sufficient criterion for “non-degeneracy” is given for Exponential Random Graph Models on sparse graphs with sufficient statistics which are functions of the degree sequence. This criterion explains why statistics such as alternating $k$-star are non-degenerate, whereas subgraph counts are degenerate. It is further shown that this criterion is “almost” tight. Existence of consistent estimates is then proved for non-degenerate Exponential Random Graph Models.

The maximal degree in a Poisson–Delaunay graph

Gilles Bonnet, Nicolas Chenavier.

Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 2, 948--979.

Abstract:
We investigate the maximal degree in a Poisson–Delaunay graph in $mathbf{R}^{d}$, $dgeq 2$, over all nodes in the window $mathbf{W}_{ ho }:= ho^{1/d}[0,1]^{d}$ as $ ho $ goes to infinity. The exact order of this maximum is provided in any dimension. In the particular setting $d=2$, we show that this quantity is concentrated on two consecutive integers with high probability. A weaker version of this result is discussed when $dgeq 3$.
