defence Optimism or denial as mental self-defence By www.greenend.org.uk Published On :: Sat, 26 Nov 2016 15:25:44 GMT ---------------------------------------------------[Sat Nov 26 15:25:44 2016]-- From: (S) ease of well-being (steph) Subject: Optimism or denial as mental self-defence A few things recently have given me cause to consider my response to bad things happening, and my reactions to other people's responses. First, there's Trump's election in the US which is undesirable and directly or indirectly likely to cause some people harm (although I doubt it'll have any effect on me personally). I agree that he's not the best or even a good candidate and I agree that he has incited prejudiced people to show and act on their prejudices: people are being hurt. However, I do not like the stream of articles saying he's a white supremacist or a Nazi or California should secede or the Electoral College should choose Clinton, or whatever. Part of this is doubtless my contrary streak, but part of it is something different. I observe that I am semi-consciously adopting a position that `things will turn out all right' or `it won't be that bad' because countenancing the opposite is not good for my mental health. The other thing is some changes in the wider organisation for which I work; basically there has been a botched reorganisation which has left most people unhappy and from what I hear from numerous sources with good reason. This doesn't currently affect me much and I don't expect it to because of political realities. However, even just having the argument with someone closer to the failing department (and more likely to feel its direct effects) seems to be followed by my feeling anxious and depressed. Again, adopting a constructive positive attitude (which may appear to others pollyannaish, naive, optimistic, or just in denial) seems to be a defence I've learned here and I suspect it helps. But there's more obviously a risk when I'm more involved than I am in the US case, namely that my optimism will blind me to dangers that will be to my detriment. Does my ornery nature come to the rescue, though? Perhaps because I'm at heart a bit of a grumpy sod and only respect authorities when I think they deserve it my tendency to want to probe and prod and query and dig my heels in may counteract the defensive optimism. Or alternatively, I'm optimistic in a different sense: perhaps I just have confidence that I'll win? LJDW Full Article

defence Collective Defence and Common Security: Twin Pillars of the Atlantic Alliance By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: Tue, 10 Jun 2014 09:04:44 +0000 10 June 2014 Robin Niblett Director and Chief Executive, Chatham House @RobinNiblett Martin Butora, Ivo Daalder, Camille Grand, Ana Palacio, Roland Paris, Volker Perthes, Nathalie Tocci, Sinan Ülgen and Marcin Zaborowski 20140609NATOFoghRasmussenHagel.jpg NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, right, greets US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, center, before the start of their joint meeting at North Atlantic Council (NATO) on June 2 2014 in Brussels. Photo by Pablo Martinez Monsivais - Pool/Getty Images. Dr Robin Niblett, director of Chatham House, is chair of the NATO Group of Policy Experts, tasked with providing NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the North Atlantic Council with ideas on how to strengthen the Alliance's transatlantic bond ahead of September's NATO summit in Wales. The group's report Collective Defence and Common Security: Twin Pillars of the Atlantic Alliance was published on 10 June for discussion at a NATO conference in Brussels on the transatlantic bond. Executive Summary Key points from the Policy Experts report to NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, released at the Conference on Strengthening the Transatlantic Bond in Brussels on 10 June 2014:Transatlantic security cannot be taken for granted. Following its withdrawal from Afghanistan, NATO needs to reaffirm its value around the twin objectives of collective defence and common security. Upholding peace and stability in Europe The commitment under NATO’s Article V to treat an attack against one as an attack against all must be credible, and NATO members should take concrete steps together to make it so. Tallinn should be as secure as Toronto. There can be no return to a ‘strategic partnership’ between NATO and Russia so long as Russia’s actions threaten European security.European governments bear particular responsibility for ensuring their own territorial security. They must invest in the necessary R&D, equipment and deployable capabilities. No amount of ‘smarter’ defence will compensate for a failure to reverse falling defence spending.NATO needs to develop effective responses to the ‘non-linear’ forms of aggression seen during the crisis in Ukraine. But the EU should take the lead in helping its members and neighbours embed good governance practices that will lessen their vulnerability to external destabilization. European countries should reduce their dependence on Russian energy. Russia’s main strength should no longer be Europe’s main vulnerability. NATO’s door should remain open to all European democracies that share the values of the Alliance. However, existing members must be ready, willing and able to extend the full benefits of Alliance membership to them, including those in Article V. Confronting international insecurity NATO should not turn inwards after 2014. Much of the Middle East, and North Africa face a decade of turmoil which will pose direct threats to NATO members. In Asia, unresolved territorial disputes and historical animosities are driving dramatic rises in defence spending. It must be remembered that the Pacific Ocean is the western flank of NATO. In this context, it should not be left to the United States and a handful of others to deploy hard power beyond NATO’s borders. An over-reliance on US power projection will erode the foundations of the transatlantic bond over time. NATO and the EU must also cooperate closely to deliver their comprehensive range of capabilities to manage international crises, from market access and development assistance to military intervention and post-conflict civilian support. Completion of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) will strengthen the transatlantic community strategically as well as economically.NATO needs to differentiate its approach to working with its international partners. In particular, it should develop long-term cooperative arrangements with the small number of countries in Europe and beyond which have contributed actively alongside NATO to international security in recent years. The NATO–Russia Council should continue to operate at ambassadorial and higher levels. This will help the two sides coordinate responses to international crises and potentially rebuild trust on European security. NATO publics are increasingly sceptical about the value of any form of external intervention. Political leaders need to communicate better the deterioration of the security situation in Europe; the importance of international security to their nations' welfare and prosperity; and the need to protect the core values that underpin the Alliance, especially democratic governance, open economies and the rule of law. Those efforts, carried out under a policy of leveraging the civilian sector to maximise military power (known as ‘military–civil fusion’), have accelerated in the past decade. Research for the China Defence Universities Tracker has determined that greater numbers of Chinese universities are engaged in defence research, training defence scientists, collaborating with the military and cooperating with defence industry conglomerates and are involved in classified research.1 At least 15 civilian universities have been implicated in cyberattacks, illegal exports or espionage. China’s defence industry conglomerates are supervising agencies of nine universities and have sent thousands of their employees to train abroad. Full Article

defence In vitro and in vivo antibiotic capacity of two host defence peptides [Mechanisms of Action] By aac.asm.org Published On :: 2020-05-04T08:49:24-07:00 Two non-amidated host defence peptides named Pin2[G] and FA1 were evaluated against three types of pathogenic bacteria; two isolated from diabetic foot ulcer patients, Staphylococcus aureus UPD13 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa UPD3, and another from a commercial collection, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ATCC 14028). In vitro experiments showed that the antimicrobial performance of the synthetic peptides, Pin2[G] and FA1, was modest, although FA1 was more effective than Pin2[G]. In contrast Pin2[G] had superior in vivo anti-infective activity to FA1 in rabbit wound infections by the diabetic foot ulcer pathogens S. aureus UPD13 and P. aeruginosa UPD3. Indeed, Pin2[G] reduced bacterial colony counts of both S. aureus UPD13 and P. aeruginosa UPD3 by >100,000-fold after 48-72 h on skin wounds of infected rabbits, while in similar infected wounds, FA1 had no major effects at 72-96 h of treatment. Ceftriaxone was equally effective vs. Pseudomonas but less effective vs. S. aureus infections. Additionally, the two peptides were evaluated in mice against intragastrically inoculated S. enterica ser. Typhimurium (ATCC 14028). Only Pin2[G], at 0.56 mg/kg, was effective in reducing systemic (liver) infection by >67-fold, equivalent to the effect of treatment with levofloxacin. Pin2[G] showed superior immunomodulatory activity in increasing chemokine production by a human bronchial cell line and suppressing poly(IC)-induced pro-inflammatory IL6 production. These data showed that the in vitro antimicrobial activity of these peptides was not correlated with their in vivo anti-infective activity, and suggest that other factors such as immunomodulatory activity were more important. defence Floral vibrations by buzz-pollinating bees achieve higher frequency, velocity and acceleration than flight and defence vibrations [RESEARCH ARTICLE] By jeb.biologists.org Published On :: 2020-05-04T02:24:22-07:00 David J. Pritchard and Mario Vallejo-MarinVibrations play an important role in insect behaviour. In bees, vibrations are used in a variety of contexts including communication, as a warning signal to deter predators and during pollen foraging. However, little is known about how the biomechanical properties of bee vibrations vary across multiple behaviours within a species. In this study, we compared the properties of vibrations produced by Bombus terrestris audax (Hymenoptera: Apidae) workers in three contexts: during flight, during defensive buzzing, and in floral vibrations produced during pollen foraging on two buzz-pollinated plants (Solanum, Solanaceae). Using laser vibrometry, we were able to obtain contactless measures of both the frequency and amplitude of the thoracic vibrations of bees across the three behaviours. Despite all three types of vibrations being produced by the same power flight muscles, we found clear differences in the mechanical properties of the vibrations produced in different contexts. Both floral and defensive buzzes had higher frequency and amplitude velocity, acceleration, and displacement than the vibrations produced during flight. Floral vibrations had the highest frequency, amplitude velocity and acceleration of all the behaviours studied. Vibration amplitude, and in particular acceleration, of floral vibrations has been suggested as the key property for removing pollen from buzz-pollinated anthers. By increasing frequency and amplitude velocity and acceleration of their vibrations during vibratory pollen collection, foraging bees may be able to maximise pollen removal from flowers, although their foraging decisions are likely to be influenced by the presumably high cost of producing floral vibrations.
