aal Bhai kamaal ka single aur singer hai, says Shah Rukh Khan on Salman Khan's song Pyaar karona By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 21 Apr 2020 06:06:03 GMT Shah Rukh Khan's trademark wit was at work when he commented on Salman Khan's new song, Pyaar karona. SRK's quip came during an interactive Twitter session with fans titled "#asksrk", when a user asked him what he thought of the new song that Salman has released on the coronavirus outbreak, titled "Pyaar karona". "Bhai kamaal ka Single aur Singer hai..." was Shah Rukh's reply. Many fans feel SRK was playing a pun using the word "Single" -- which could refer to the song, as well as Salman's bachelor status. "Bhai" could be a reference to Salman, of course, but Shah Rukh could also be addressing the fan. Among several other interesting questions, SRK was asked who he would love to work with -- Martin Scorsese or Christopher Nolan. His reply, again, was a cryptic one, and many users felt he is hinting at a possible collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani in the future. Replying to the question about Scorsese or Nolan, Shah Rukh tweeted: "Wow both are awesome and I have met them... but Raju apna sa lagta hai... nahi?" aal Total Dhamaal Movie Review: Expectedly: total dumb maal! By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 23 Feb 2019 02:05:07 GMT Total DhamaalU: Action, Adventure, Comedy Director: Indra KumarCast: Ajay Devgn, Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaaferi, Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay MishraRating: The first thing you notice about this Hindi film (or at least I did) is that it plays with English subtitles. Not that most need it; but great relief, nonetheless. For I had returned from the same Mumbai theatre only the evening before, within the first minute of a Malayalam film (a heavily recommended Kumbalangi Nights), having realised that the pic had no English subs, and people were laughing at jokes (presumably), that I couldn't access. Would Total Dhamaal, in a language you didn't understand, be watchable still? Technically there is hardly a plot/story. So you'll follow what's going on, regardless. But this is the sort of deliberately-sasta, kaam chalau comedy that works on simplest set-ups, and pay-offs - or punch-lines - that you ought to be in sync with. Some jokes work - at a pure comic timing level. Several don't. But that's really what you walked in for. For the record, the first Dhamaal (2007) had entered theatres hot on the heels of the fab Golmaal (2006), with Arshad Warsi common to both - making the former seem like pretty much a sequel to the latter. Modelled along the lines of the Spencer Tracy epic It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963), Dhamaal actually had a lot of dhamaal going for it. Ever since, Golmaal has turned into a four-part, money-spinning franchise (or as Devgn calls it, his "retirement plan"). As have similar all-star comedies from the time - Housefull (the fourth instalment is on its way), Kya Kool Hain Hum (in the screwball, sex-com space), Masti (there've been three so far - directed by Indra Kumar, as well). This is the third in the Dhamaal series, and as a ride, perhaps mainly intended for kids, if you consider the amount of slapstick (instead of adult) humour, stereotyped 'Madrasi', Bihari, Gujju kinda gags, and tonnes of fine VFX paraphernalia - collapsing bridge, rickety helicopter, cute animals bumbling around in the farm, folk either hanging or flying off ledges… This is besides a lot of self-referential Bollywood one-liners that appear as stuck in time as, of course, the picture itself. And so the password to open a door is 'one-two ka four; four-two ka one' as Lakhan, or Anil Kapoor, jumps off a wall. 'Ek do teen' as in the Madhuri Dixit Nene song is referred to, since Dixit is in the movie, along with Kapoor. Rohit Shetty is summoned in a line while cars fly. Ajay Devgn is of course the dude. His sidekick, Sanjay Mishra, whose refrain, "Dhondu, just chill," made him a superstar with Shetty's All The Best (2010), a similar mad-cap comedy, gets, "Bro," a new takia-kalaam here. But my favourite guys in this movie have got to be Adi, and his man-child partner Manav (Arshad Warsi, Jaaved Jaaferi). Glad they've survived the franchise's original line-up (the only ones to, besides the perennial ensemble-com favourite, Riteish Deshmukh). The entire lot is after a Rs 50 crore booty. All they know is that it's kept at a zoo. And with presumably someone called OK, which is what you must feel like - never mind what happens in the movie thereafter. Anything I say about this expectedly total dumb maal, should be construed as boring old me, coming in the way of your heightened, harebrained entertainment. Already have; read no further! aal Get ready to feast on a Bohri thaal at this upcoming restaurant in Bandra By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 25 Aug 2017 13:31:37 GMT (Clockwise from left) Bheja Hara Masala, Nalli Nihari, Paya Soup, Tandoori Roti, Dal Chawal Palidu, Pizza Naan and Bohri Biryani (centre) The Hill Road's din is drowned out by soothing Middle Eastern music as we step into The Tha'l Co, tucked in a residential building off the bustling street. We soak in the pale blue and stone grey décor, with charming latticework, candle-lit tables and abstract art adorning the walls, half expecting a performance of belly dancers. Instead, two staffers bring out a massive, 33-inch Bohri thaal, laden with nine types of starters, four pickles and two salad options. Pineapple Halwa, Kesar Pista Sancha Ice Cream, Amba Roti, Paan and Mukhwaas Owner Avinash Bhatia gets the reaction he's hoping for - our gaping mouths. "Bohri food has always been close to my heart, as I grew up with friends from the community. I sourced traditional recipes from them," says the Sindhi businessman, who hails from a family of property developers. He also has experience of running the family-owned Club 9 at Pali Hill, which replaced Hungry Bunny, a cosy café that his father had launched back in 1990s. A community callThe Tha'l Co offers à la carte and set menus, the latter in the form of thaals for a solo diner and even a family. They also take catering orders. "The family thaal feeds seven guests. It includes mains and desserts too," he says as he ushers us to a low-seating table with seat cushions. It represents the community's traditional dining set-up where a family sits on the floor around a common thaal. However, we opt for the table-and-chair set up, considering we're in for the long haul. (Clockwise from left) Bheja Hara Masala, Nalli Nihari, Paya Soup, Tandoori Roti, Dal Chawal Palidu, Pizza Naan and Bohri Biryani (centre) After the traditional passing of salt and a bite of sodhanu (rice and sugar to start the meal), we dig into Dhungareli Tangdi, wrapped in foil and cooked in coals. The dish stars fall-off-the-bone chicken legs cooked in creamy gravy with a distinct crumbly cheese texture that teases our palate. Then, we move on to fried-till-crisp Chicken Kheema Samosas and Chicken Shahi Roll, where crumb-fried barrels burst with meaty, cheesy flavours. They're washed down with refreshing, watermelon-flavoured Bir Soda, as integral to the community as Pallonji's is to Parsis. For veggies tooThe vegetarian options include Soya Chaaps, where the mock meat is slathered with a makhani-like gravy. We also enjoy the salads - Kokam Bateta, featuring well-cooked potatoes hidden under a thick, tangy-spicy coating, and Kachumber laced with silken, mashed brinjal. The highlights are the melt-in-the-mouth minced lamb Galawati and the skewered Seekh Kebabs, where the soft and juicy mutton packs in robust, spicy flavours. Dance to DCPThe mains include Nalli Nihari, Bheja Hara Masala, Bohri Biryani and the vegetarian DCP aka Dal Chawal Palidu. The Nihari wins us over with its soft and succulent lamb cooked in a well-spiced stock with a hint of fennel seeds that we relish with fluffy Pizza Naan. The Bheja Hara Masala scores for its creamy coriander-based gravy, whose flavours are soaked in by goat meat. The dum-cooked Bohri Biryani, with succulent chunks of mutton and potatoes, turns out to be a lighter version of its north Indian sibling. It's long rice grains are laced with the right amount of whole spices and slight tang from the curd. A smoking-hot piece of coal on a bed of mildly flavoured rice and lentils takes the modest DCP to the next level. The flavour lingers in our mouth long after we've tucked into the comforting dish with Palidu, a drumstick stew tempered with cumin and thickened with Bengal gram flour. By the time we reach the desserts - the rich Pineapple Halwa and creamy Sancha (hand-churned) ice cream in kesar pista flavour - we feel too stuffed to move, realising the true meaning of food coma. Opens: Next week, 12 pm to 3.30 pm; 7.30 pm to 11.30 pmAt: Pooja Society, Chinchpokli Road, Bandra WestCall: 8956988888Cost: `786 (single thaal), `986 (per person for family thaal) Full Article
aal Heard Sona Mohapatra's Zaalima version? The singer highlights gender politics in the music industry By www.mid-day.com Published On :: 28 Apr 2020 07:00:43 GMT Singer Sona Mohapatra, who is known to speak her mind, has come up with a new song, her own badass version of Raees' Zaalima. The singer's soulful voice is a perfect fit for love ballads, case in point Ambarsariya, Naina, Bolo Na and many of her hits. While, it wouldn't be wrong to say that, very few female solo songs are released nowadays in film soundtracks, it came as a pleasant surprise to see this reprise and refreshing version of the the Shah Rukh Khan's film, Raees' popular love song. Sona has an unique ability to infuse newness in songs and her version of Zaalima is quite different from the original version, sung by Arijit Singh. As per her post, she had created this in-house video with some interesting 'gender-political' messaging about the state of the music industry some time ago and is all set to release it to spread cheer and even some laughs to drive away the lockdown blues, now! Sona says, "Musicians have been hit the hardest in recent times. There are no residuals or royalties for creators here unlike the west and unless we step out to play concerts on stage we don't make money. It's only sweat labour in India. The lockdown and post COVID era will hit the musicians even harder with no stages to play in and the economy focusing on essentials. In these grim times, most artists in my community have been setting aside their own emotional state and performing online to spread joy and love and I am so proud of all of them! In these times you realise that it's mostly musicians who have the craft and talent to deliver without too many resources or people helping them. My DIY video should be taken with a pinch of salt although any good comedy does come from a truthful place; our film-music has completely sidelined the strong solo female voice in the last decade and it's time for all of us to notice." "Few know that I had been called to sing the last few lines of the film version but couldn’t fathom why only the last few lines were reserved for the female voice considering it was a romantic duet!" - she wrote on her YouTube channel, while sharing the song. A user commented - "I didn't know who's voice was this? Also, I was a huge fan of Sona Ma'am. But now I'm flat. And now after this rendition, I'm completely dead." Another user commented: Thank goodness she didn't end up singing the actual song. Tell us your views about the new version of Zaalima! Catch up on all the latest entertainment news and gossip here. aal Music Review: Malaal By Published On :: Thu, 27 Jun 2019 08:29:56 GMT <strong>EXPECTATIONS</strong> <em>Malaal</em> is a love story coming from Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has produced the film. Though his directorial offerings have always boasted of at least two or three memorable songs, same can't be said about his productions. Considering that he has composed majority of songs in <em>Malaal</em> with Prashant Ingole writing the lyrics, one waits to see what the team has to offer. <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-980862" src="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Malaal-Official-Trailer-Sharmin-Segal-Meezaan.jpg" alt="" width="720" height="405" /> <strong>MUSIC</strong> It is a 'dhinchaak' start that <em>Malaal</em> gets with Vishal Dadlani and Shreyas Puranik coming together for the 'tapori' number <strong><em>'Aila Re'</em></strong>. Vishal sounds quite different in this 'basti' and chawl number that has a good hook to it with beats that do catch your attention. Pritam has composed quite a few songs in this genre over the years and with Sanjay Leela Bhansali too following the 80s formula, you like what you hear here. With the core hook borrowed from <strong><em>'Apun Bola'</em></strong> [<em>Josh</em>], which was again based on Maharashtrian folk music, <em>'Udhal Ho'</em> too is attached to the roots with hard-core local flavour. Newcomer Adarsh Shinde is roped in for this number which is more Marathi than Hindi in its overall treatment and its styling too is such that it would have a restricted audience in only Maharashtra belt. Shreyas Puranik is the composer as well as singer of <strong><em>'Nadhkhula'</em></strong> and one only ends up wonders what exactly does the title of the song mean here. This one is a love song which is again set in an old fashion manner. Though unlike the first two songs in the album this one doesn't get into the Marathi zone, the lazy pace as well as an overall dull treatment doesn't help the cause. Another newcomer singer, Rutvik Talashilkar, is roped in for <strong><em>'Aai Shapat'</em></strong> and yet again the song gets into a Marathi zone. Right from the music to the lyrics as well as the manner in which the song is rendered, this one has a local Marathi feel to it. No wonder, you can't relate to the soundtrack here to have been created for a Hindi film as the overall treatment is too localized. Shreya Ghoshal, the most experienced of the lot and a top singer, makes a belated appearance in the soundtrack of <em>Malaal</em> with <strong><em>'Kathai Kathai'</em></strong>. Remember <em>'Kathai Aankhon Waali Ek Ladki'</em> [<em>Duplicate</em>]? Well, this time around the gender is reversed as the leading lady falls in love with her boy who boasts of 'kathai aankhen'. Not that this one goes ahead and makes one fall in love with the tune in the offering. Still, this A.M. Turaz and Prashant Ingole number is better than last few songs that one had heard so far and you can sit through the entire duration. Another newcomer singer, Aanandi Joshi, is the one to kick-start the proceedings for <strong><em>'Zara Suno'</em></strong>. A love song which has an Indi-pop contemporary feel to it, this Shail Hada composed tune may not be the one that you would fall in love with instantly; however it still makes for a decent enough listening. Rutvik Talashilkar is back in the fold after singing <em>'Aai Shapat'</em> and gives a different account of himself. Shail Hada steps in as a singer for the title song <strong><em>'Ek Malaal'</em></strong> which arrives right at the end of the soundtrack. Reminding one of the ghazals from the 80s, this one is really slow moving, sad in feel and overall dull in treatment, hence promising to make an impact on the pace of the film when it will appear. Hope this one has a short duration in the film's narrative. <strong>OVERALL</strong> The music of <em>Malaal</em> is barely passable with just a song or two managing to leave some kind of impression. <strong>OUR PICK(S)</strong> <em>‘Aila Re’</em>, <em>‘Kathai Kathai’</em>, <em>‘Zara Suno’</em> Full Article
aal Movie Review: Laal Kaptaan By Published On :: Fri, 18 Oct 2019 04:05:11 GMT Since last year, Bollywood has seen a rise in period films based in the pre-Independence era. Not just films based on real-life characters like MANIKARNIKA – THE QUEEN OF JHANSI, KESARI or SYE RAA NARASIMHA REDDY, but even fictional sagas like THUGS OF HINDOSTAN, TUMMBAD or the upcoming SHAMSHERA are also being made. Saif Ali Khan’s latest outing, LAAL KAPTAAN, belongs to the latter category and attempts to tell a revenge drama. So does LAAL KAPTAAN succeed in entertaining despite the niche appeal? Or does it fail to impress? Let’s analyse. <img class="aligncenter wp-image-1031588 size-full" title="Movie Review: Laal Kaptaan" src="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Movie-Review-Laal-Kaptaan.jpg" alt="Movie Review: Laal Kaptaan" width="750" height="450" /> LAAL KAPTAAN is the story of revenge spanning a couple of decades. The year is 1789, 25 years after Battle of Buxar. Hunter (Saif Ali Khan) is a Naga Sadhu who’s looking for a man called Rehmat Khan (Manav Vij). Through Noor Bibi (Sonakshi Sinha), Hunter finds out that Rehmat is a governor of a kingdom somewhere in North India. At this time, the evil Rehmat takes away all the treasure of his kingdom and kills his servants. Along with his army, his confidant Aadham Khan (Aamir Bashir), his wife (Simone Singh), wet nurse (Eshika De) and his newborn son, he abandons the fort and is on a way to the banks of the river Yamuna. By the time Hunter reaches the fort, there’s no one except a widow (Zoya Hussain). Hunter gets injured while fighting some Pathans on the way and the widow takes care of him and treats his wounds. In return, she requests him to take her with him. Hunter refuses and yet, she follows him. After Hunter and the widow leave, a tracker (Deepak Dobriyal) who’s an expert in finding out whereabouts with the help of his smelling power and pet dogs, reaches the fort. In some time, the Marathas attack the fort and the tracker agrees to help them find Rehmat. Rehmat was to give a portion of the treasure to the Marathas but since he didn’t, they are trying to find him. Meanwhile, a few days later, the Hunter reaches the place where Rehmat and his army have camped for the night. Hunter quietly enters Rehmat’s tent but he doesn’t kill him, which has always been his sole aim since 25 years. Rehmat’s army nabs Hunter but Rehmat doesn’t want him eliminated. He wants to know who exactly is Hunter and why he wants to kill him. Rehmat is also reminded that six years ago, he had crossed paths with Hunter and the latter had told him that he’ll finish him. Even then, Hunter had spared him. What happens next forms the rest of the film. Deepak Venkatesha and Navdeep Singh's story is very poor and gives a déjà vu of certain period films of Bollywood and also Hollywood. Deepak Venkatesha and Navdeep Singh's screenplay is confusing and ineffective. The film has too many tracks and except Hunter’s track, none of them are interesting. Also, the transition between tracks is not smooth. There’s a twist in the tale revealed in the pre climax but it arrives at a time when viewers are tired with the goings on and just want the film to end. Sudip Sharma's dialogues are nothing special and quite pretentious. The philosophical one-liners fail to entice. Also, various dialects and even Marathi is used and it’ll be difficult to decipher some of the lines in the absence of subtitles. Navdeep Singh's direction is highly disappointing. He had very weak material in his hand and moreover, he further spoils the show with his execution. The film is extremely dry and slow and very few scenes arrest your attention. There’s also an attempt to add humour with the character of the tracker and by showing Pindaris, allied with the Maratha army, as buffoons. But it just doesn’t impress. Even the revenge bit looks silly as Hunter crosses paths with Rehmat Khan twice and yet doesn’t kill him. <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Laal Kaptaan: Public Review | First Day First Show | Saif Ali Khan</strong></span> <iframe id="jwiframe" class="playerFrame" src="https://www.bollywoodhungama.com/videos/first-day-first-show/laal-kaptaan-public-review-first-day-first-show-saif-ali-khan/?jwembed=1" width="800" height="340" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe> LAAL KAPTAAN has an intriguing beginning showing the flashback portion. Hunter’s entry is heroic but soon the film falls flat and it remains that way till the end, save for a few minutes in between. The film is too long at 155 minutes and moves at a snail’s pace. The story moreover is very random and also quite confusing. Hence, it becomes difficult for audiences to keep their interest. Also, it is bewildering that Hunter is desperate to find Rehmat Khan since 25 years. And when he finally meets him, he never kills him. Audiences would never be able to understand this factor. In the end, the reason is revealed but it’s very unconvincing and silly. Talking of performances, Saif Ali Khan genuinely puts up a good show. His look is quite dashing and he excels in action scenes. Manav Vij too does very well, as the baddie. His intense eyes work very well for such roles. Deepak Dobriyal is mildly amusing but in most scenes, his act doesn’t raise laughs. Zoya Hussain puts up a confident show. Simone Singh is decent. Aamir Bashir and Eshika De are passable. Neeraj Kabi (Sadullah Khan) gives a nice performance in a cameo and same goes for Chetan Hansraj (Sangram Singh) and Ajay Paul (Thakur). Vibha Rani (Laal Pari) is quite scary as clairvoyant but the director misses the bus here as he could have done a lot with this character. Madan Deodhar (Maratha captain) is appropriate and he’s the only one who manages some laughs. Henry Douthwaite (British officer Theodore Munro) has nothing much to do. Sonakshi Sinha is wasted and is there for just one scene. Samira Koppikar's music is nothing great and songs are badly used. <em>'Taandav'</em> sounds exhilarating but comes at a very confusing point in the movie. <em>'Red Red Najariya'</em> could have made for a great item song but is played just for a few seconds and hence, wasted. <em>'Kaal Kaal'</em> and <em>'Lahu ka Rang Kara'</em> don’t make the desired impact. Benedict Taylor and Naren Chandavarkar's background score is in sync with the film’s mood. Shanker Raman's cinematography is spectacular and the film is shot in some virgin locales. Rakesh Yadav's production design is authentic. Darshan Yewalekar's hair design and Dhananjay Prajapati's makeup is spot on, especially in case of Saif. Maxima Basu Golani's costumes too are straight out of the 18th century India. Illusion Ethereal's VFX is fine but could have been better in some scenes. Jabeen Merchant's editing is haphazard in several scenes. On the whole, LAAL KAPTAAN is bizarre and a poor film that has nothing substantial to offer the audiences in general. At the box office, the negligible buzz along with its release in the dull pre-Diwali period will spell doom for the film. Full Article
