by The equivalence of dynamic and static asset allocations under the uncertainty caused by Poisson processes By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 14 Jan 2019 04:01 EST Yong-Chao Zhang, Na Zhang. Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 33, Number 1, 184--191.Abstract: We investigate the equivalence of dynamic and static asset allocations in the case where the price process of a risky asset is driven by a Poisson process. Under some mild conditions, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the equivalence of dynamic and static asset allocations. In addition, we provide a simple sufficient condition for the equivalence. Full Article
by Plan2Vec: Unsupervised Representation Learning by Latent Plans. (arXiv:2005.03648v1 [cs.LG]) By arxiv.org Published On :: In this paper we introduce plan2vec, an unsupervised representation learning approach that is inspired by reinforcement learning. Plan2vec constructs a weighted graph on an image dataset using near-neighbor distances, and then extrapolates this local metric to a global embedding by distilling path-integral over planned path. When applied to control, plan2vec offers a way to learn goal-conditioned value estimates that are accurate over long horizons that is both compute and sample efficient. We demonstrate the effectiveness of plan2vec on one simulated and two challenging real-world image datasets. Experimental results show that plan2vec successfully amortizes the planning cost, enabling reactive planning that is linear in memory and computation complexity rather than exhaustive over the entire state space. by Classification of pediatric pneumonia using chest X-rays by functional regression. (arXiv:2005.03243v1 [stat.AP]) By arxiv.org Published On :: An accurate and prompt diagnosis of pediatric pneumonia is imperative for successful treatment intervention. One approach to diagnose pneumonia cases is using radiographic data. In this article, we propose a novel parsimonious scalar-on-image classification model adopting the ideas of functional data analysis. Our main idea is to treat images as functional measurements and exploit underlying covariance structures to select basis functions; these bases are then used in approximating both image profiles and corresponding regression coefficient. We re-express the regression model into a standard generalized linear model where the functional principal component scores are treated as covariates. We apply the method to (1) classify pneumonia against healthy and viral against bacterial pneumonia patients, and (2) test the null effect about the association between images and responses. Extensive simulation studies show excellent numerical performance in terms of classification, hypothesis testing, and efficient computation. Full Article

by Robust sparse covariance estimation by thresholding Tyler’s M-estimator By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 17 Feb 2020 04:02 EST John Goes, Gilad Lerman, Boaz Nadler. Source: The Annals of Statistics, Volume 48, Number 1, 86--110.Abstract: Estimating a high-dimensional sparse covariance matrix from a limited number of samples is a fundamental task in contemporary data analysis. Most proposals to date, however, are not robust to outliers or heavy tails. Toward bridging this gap, in this work we consider estimating a sparse shape matrix from $n$ samples following a possibly heavy-tailed elliptical distribution. We propose estimators based on thresholding either Tyler’s M-estimator or its regularized variant. We prove that in the joint limit as the dimension $p$ and the sample size $n$ tend to infinity with $p/n ogamma>0$, our estimators are minimax rate optimal. Results on simulated data support our theoretical analysis. Full Article
by Characterization of probability distribution convergence in Wasserstein distance by $L^{p}$-quantization error function By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Fri, 31 Jan 2020 04:06 EST Yating Liu, Gilles Pagès. Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 2, 1171--1204.Abstract: We establish conditions to characterize probability measures by their $L^{p}$-quantization error functions in both $mathbb{R}^{d}$ and Hilbert settings. This characterization is two-fold: static (identity of two distributions) and dynamic (convergence for the $L^{p}$-Wasserstein distance). We first propose a criterion on the quantization level $N$, valid for any norm on $mathbb{R}^{d}$ and any order $p$ based on a geometrical approach involving the Voronoï diagram. Then, we prove that in the $L^{2}$-case on a (separable) Hilbert space, the condition on the level $N$ can be reduced to $N=2$, which is optimal. More quantization based characterization cases in dimension 1 and a discussion of the completeness of a distance defined by the quantization error function can be found at the end of this paper. by A unified approach to coupling SDEs driven by Lévy noise and some applications By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Tue, 26 Nov 2019 04:00 EST Mingjie Liang, René L. Schilling, Jian Wang. Source: Bernoulli, Volume 26, Number 1, 664--693.Abstract: We present a general method to construct couplings of stochastic differential equations driven by Lévy noise in terms of coupling operators. This approach covers both coupling by reflection and refined basic coupling which are often discussed in the literature. As applications, we prove regularity results for the transition semigroups and obtain successful couplings for the solutions to stochastic differential equations driven by additive Lévy noise.
